Welcome back to another episode of Let’s Talk Human Rights brought to you by the Standing Committee of Human Rights and Peace from IFMSA Groningen.
In this episode, we interviewed Dr. Marco Versluis. Dr. Versluis is a gynecologist and obstetrician who teaches about Reproductive Health, from contraception and female health, through to pregnancy and birth. Since 2012, he has worked as a trainer in a Surgical Training Programme in Masanga, Sierra Leone.
In this episode we dove into topics surrounding safe motherhood, looking at the state of things internationally as well as within the Netherlands. We looked at various factors that are responsible for high maternal and neonatal mortality rates; why they occur, how they can be tackled. We also got deeper into the dutch system, examining how the midwifery system works in comparison to other countries.
Welcome to another episode of Let's Talk Human Rights! This month's episode is devoted to safe motherhood!
We unraveled the concept of safe motherhood and how the lack of practice affects the human rights of the mother and the baby. Moreover, we touched upon the impact of societal factors which influence the practice of safe motherhood and family planning such as racial disparities and the decisions on the abortion ban.
We hope you enjoy!
Welcome to another episode of Let's Talk Human Rights! This month's episode is devoted to all the beautiful women out there!
We collected stories from women and touched upon the topics of; sexual harassment, violations regarding transgender women's rights and the impact of stereotypical societal views on girls. Moreover we discuss female empowerment and how to become an advocate for women's rights and bring change!
We hope you enjoy :))
Welcome to another episode of Let's Talk Human Rights! In this month’s episode we present the most impactful news of 2021 which shook the world!
We discuss the Afghanistan crisis; the war in Afghanistan which started in 2021 and ends in 2021 as the last U.S. military forces depart Afghanistan, leaving it under Taliban rule. Furthermore we talk about the 2021 fall of Kabul; the capture of Afghanistan's capital city by the Taliban on 15 August 2021. We discuss various aspects of international law that lead up to this. Listen to find out what the agreement between the US and the Taliban lead to?
Moreover, we touch upon China’s crimes against humanity. China has subjected more than a million Uyghurs, Kazakhs, and other Muslims to mass detention, surveillance, and torture in Xinjiang, which began in 2017. China routinely denies all accusations of human rights abuses in Xinjiang. The US state department has previously described China's actions in Xinjiang as a genocide, and the parliaments of the UK, Canada, Netherlands and Lithuania have passed resolutions making the same declaration. But why can't China get investigated by an international legal body?
Another important issue we comment on is the Myanmar military coup protest. The military seized control on 1 February 2021 on the morning the elected party National League for Democracy was going to start its second term in office. Foreign journalists have been barred from reporting in Myanmar since the coup, and most non-state media outlets have been shut down, making on-the-ground reporting all but impossible. In July the Myanmar military started carrying out mass killings of civilians after the fighting between the military and civilian-military groups was intensifying. But how were women treated during the military coup protest?
To find out more on these topics but also on some positive and really hopeful changes which happened in 2021, make sure to listen till the end! We hope you enjoy it!

Welcome to another episode of Let's Talk Human Rights! For this episode we had the pleasure of talking with Marthine Bos. Marthine is a medical anthropologist / social nurse who specializes in training professionals wishing to speak about taboos within other cultures, especially topics surrounding sexuality and female circumcision.
In this episode, we discussed Female Genital Mutilation (FGM). According to the World Health Organization, FGM is still practiced in over 30 countries around the world, with an estimated 200 million girls and women having been subjected to this practice.
We touched on Marthine's experiences working in various African countries and what inspired her to go into the direction of Human Rights advocacy before moving onto background information about FGM. We then discussed what efforts are being done in the Netherlands and Internationally to combat and help survivors of FGM, before going into some reasons as to why it is still practiced today, why this logic is inherently flawed, and what we can do to further educate ourselves.
