In this episode, I sat down with Nico Epstein, who is an art advisor, educator, and the founder of Collector Connoisseur.Nico has spent around 15 years building a career that has essentially touched nearly every corner of the art world. He has worked with museums, galleries, auction houses, educational organizations, and private clients and has been taking an incredibly entrepreneurial approach to his work and how he approaches the sector. In our discussion, Nico is an open book about his experiences in the art world and shares a lot of knowledge about the art market, how it’s changing, and what sort of things we need to be navigating as these changes happen. We talk about Collector Connoisseur, the online platform and course he built after noticing a gap in the market with his art advising, what it actually takes to build a collector base, and what Nico makes of where the art market is heading.Thank you Nico for coming on the podcast! You can follow Nico on Instagram at @nicoknowsart_ and find Collector Connoisseur at collectorconnoisseur.com- - - - - If you love what we do, support ALL ABOUT ART on PATREON! https://www.patreon.com/allaboutartKeep up to date on Instagram @allaboutartpodcast https://www.instagram.com/allaboutartpodcast/ ABOUT THE HOST:I am an Austrian-American art historian, curator, and writer. Unfiltered Frieze Survival Guide, RECORDED LIVE - on Monday evening, I sat down at Ned’s Club, a private members' club in London, with the brilliant Carrie Scott, art advisor and founder of SEEN, a next-generation art consultancy, for a live episode of All About Art in front of a wonderful audience (with champagne in hand! 🥂)With Frieze London coming up, we wanted to talk about everything you might need to know before stepping into the madness. We unpack the current state of the art market and share practical advice on building a collection with intention, and we also talk about why collecting art is more important now than ever. We touch on some highlights Carrie is looking forward to, one of them being Cecilia Vicuña’s paintings at Lehmann Maupin’s booth (you heard it here first, folks!). The conversation was candid and full of great recommendations, one of them being the Arthur Analytics App, which is currently free and can be used to look at what galleries are bringing to the fair. This isn’t an ad, it’s just a recommended tool Carrie mentioned in our conversation. I’ve downloaded it already, and so did many of our audience members! It was so much fun to record live, so a huge thank you to Carrie, to everyone who came along, and, of course, to the team at Ned’s Club for hosting us. A new (extra long) episode of All About Art with Director of the Middelheim Museum Sara Weyns and artist Monster ChetwyndIn this episode, you get two interviews in one. For Sara, start from the beginning, and for Monster, you can skip to 50min 49sec.Firstly, Sara Weyns, the museum’s director and co-curator of the exhibition A Friends Making Machine featuring the works by artist Monster Chetwynd. We talk about how it all came together, what it looks like to work curatorially with a practice as live and multifaceted as Monster’s, and how Middelheim thinks about programming for an audience that ranges from contemporary art specialists to people who have wandered in to stroll through the park. And then you will hear from Monster Chetwynd, the artist herself. Her practice pulls together interactive performance, sculpture, painting, installation, and video. Conversation and co-creation are essential to her practice, and, in line with the title of the exhibition, through artistic creation, new friendships emerge and the energy of these connections and support systems can really be felt in her work.Thank you Monster and Sara for coming on the podcast!- - - - - If you love what we do, support ALL ABOUT ART on PATREON! https://www.patreon.com/allaboutartKeep up to date on Instagram @allaboutartpodcast https://www.instagram.com/allaboutartpodcast/ ABOUT THE HOST:I am an Austrian-American art historian, curator, and writer. Creating the Shopify of Auctions with Tom Best, Founder of The Auction CollectiveIn this episode, I sat down with Tom Best, founder and CEO of The Auction Collective.Tom came up through Christie's Auction House, where he spent six years as an auctioneer and contemporary art specialist, before doing a stint in humanitarian aid and then combining those two threads into The Auction Collective. He started his business in 2017 as a live auction event pop-up, pivoted into online auctions during the pandemic, and has since grown into what Tom describes as the Shopify of auctions — a white-label platform that lets artists, charities, and organisations run their own auctions without having to approach a big auction house. In this episode, we talk about how all of that actually happened, including the iterations, the pivots, the decisions around hiring and building a team, and what it looks like to raise investment for a business sitting at the intersection of tech and the art market. We talk about what it means to take a concept like Shopify and apply it to the art world, and whether that model translates when you apply it to an industry that is as relationship- and trust-driven as the art market. This was such a transparent, fun, and eye-opening episode when it comes to auctions, start ups, and the art world. 📺 The Television Series the Art World Can’t Stop Talking About: THE BIG DEAL with Steph McGovern A new television series has come out this month, and the Art World™️ has been TALKING about it! 👇👇👇“The Big Deal is a high-stakes, six-part competition where seven pairs of amateur, aspiring art dealers battle to spot talent, pitch to buyers, and turn a profit in the contemporary art market to win £50,000 in British art.”Some felt as though the BBC had brought many negative sides of the art world into the spotlight, and some felt like it was great to have the art world represented on such a big, mainstream stage. (A lot of discussion happening over on Jeff Magid’s and Carrie Scott’s Instagram pages if you want to have a look for yourself). So, naturally, when I got the chance to interview the HOST of the show, Steph Mcgovern, I jumped at the chance. Steph is someone who has spent her career making complex, often intimidating subjects accessible to everyone - she started out as an economics journalist, spent eight years on BBC Breakfast, presented over 250 episodes of Steph’s Packed Lunch on Channel 4, and now co-hosts The Rest Is Money Podcast with Robert Peston. In this episode, we talk about the show, what Steph learned from making it, and what surprised her most about the art market when she dove a little deeper. We also talk about her dad’s career as a sculptor, the art she collects herself, and what it looks like to move across formats and industries over the course of a long career in television. We get into what it takes to feel at home in front of a camera, and what Steph would tell anyone who wants to build that kind of confidence for themselves. And we talk about what it means to walk into a world - whether that’s the media industry or the art market - feeling like an outsider, and how you can navigate it to the best of your ability. The book recommendation from Steph: https://www.goodreads.com/en/book/show/200740797-the-final-act-of-juliette-willoughby- - - - - If you love what we do, support ALL ABOUT ART on PATREON! https://www.patreon.com/allaboutartKeep up to date on Instagram @allaboutartpodcast https://www.instagram.com/allaboutartpodcast/ ABOUT THE HOST:I am an Austrian-American art historian, curator, and writer.
