Inflation, Oil & the Economy Inflation numbers came out last week, and the latest report was better than expected in some respects. David looks at two important measures: headline inflation and core inflation. Core CPI, which excludes food and energy, increased 2.4% over the past molnth, down from 2.5% in July. Headline CPI held at 3.4% . Energy prices, particularly gasoline, have been an important contributor to recent inflation readings. David also takes a look at historical numbers, including the 10-year Treasury yield, gasoline prices, and how energy costs can affect the economy and inflation. Listener Question: Capital Gains This episode also features a listener question: If you buy a stock for $10 and sell it for $30, what is the capital gains tax? David explains how capital gains work, how the taxable gain is calculated, and the factors that can affect how much tax you may owe. The Fed Raises Rates Let's get to it: the Federal Reserve raised interest rates by 25 basis points today, bringing the federal funds target range to 3.75%–4.00%. The Fed said economic activity is expanding at a solid pace, while inflation remains elevated and uncertainty remains tied in part to geopolitical developments. David discusses why he didn't think the rate hike was necessary, arguing that much of the current inflation pressure is connected to the conflict involving Iran and higher energy prices. His view is that if the conflict ends and oil and gas prices decline, some of that inflation pressure could ease. Despite the rate increase, the market reaction has been relatively limited so far, and David takes a closer look at what the decision could mean for investors. What Exactly Is the Federal Funds Rate? So, what is the federal funds rate? It is the interest rate at which depository institutions lend balances to one another overnight. Changes in the federal funds rate can influence other short-term interest rates, financial conditions, and eventually broader economic activity. David explains why this rate matters to investors, borrowers, and the overall economy—and why understanding the Fed can help you better understand the financial markets.
