Welcome back to the Wild About Conservation podcast. In this episode we wrap up the wonderful season that we have had for the latter half of 2021. We talk a little about what  we have been up to recently - it’s not all podcasting! And Hannah gets to share her experience about her time at COP26.  We really want to thank all of our listeners for your ongoing support, it has meant the world to us to hear your feedback - and we absolutely love that some of you have been reaching out to guests too! 2021 was a big year for our podcast; we launched, we have had 2 seasons, we ran our first giveaway and now we have our merch too! Keep listening for a great episode that focuses on demystifying COP26 Here is where to find us: Twitter: twitter.com/Have_A_Wild_Day Instagram: instagram.com/have_a_wild_day/ Email: wildaboutconservation@gmail.com Patreon: patreon.com/wildaboutconservation Get us featured elsewhere: wildaboutconservation@gmail.com Our logo: instagram.com/sion_draws And finally don’t forget to subscribe and share us with your friends!
In this episode we talk with Richard Lilley also known as RJ, who is passionate about education, particularly marine science communication and outdoor learning. He is interested in the role of seagrass meadows and is speaking to us as one of the founders of Project Seagrass. His work domestically is focussed on developing seagrass meadow restoration opportunities across Scotland and supporting restoration of seagrass throughout the UK, and further afield. RJ has over nine years experience of research in marine systems. He has primarily worked in the Caribbean and Mediterranean Seas and more recently the North Atlantic Ocean. We talk about seagrasses in the UK, but also globally. We cover what seagrass is, why we should care about seagrass for seagrasses sake, and some amazing projects involving local communities. Hello, and welcome to the Wild About Conservation Podcast. In this episode we talk with Andrea Copping, a senior researcher for the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory in the United States department of Energy and who is also a Fellow of the University of Washington. Her work focuses on marine renewable energy and offshore wind development - which is energy created by changes in the ocean - waves, tides, temperature and salinity. Andrea is a wonderful speaker and plays a lead role in marine renewable energy end applications that support Blue Economy development including ocean observations, aquaculture, and providing power to remote communities and islands. Keep listening to dive into this cutting edge science, and hopefully come out a little more informed. In this episode we mention COP26, which is an International Meeting to Discuss Global Action on Climate Change that (at time of recording)  just closed in Glasgow, Scotland. We will be having an episode soon to chat about this in more detail. Hello and welcome back to the Wild About conservation Podcast. Join us this episode as we chat to Chelsea Gray, an Environmental Science and Policy PhD student at George Mason University. Her research focuses on using Individual Based Models for Basking Shark Behaviour and using those to inform relevant policy. Chelsea is an excellent communicator who explains what individual based models are, how policy is created, and how scientists like herself may better be able to inform policy using their research. This episode isn’t just about the models but all about basking sharks too. One key takeaway is that citizen science projects that capture species presence data are invaluable - if you spot a basking shark in Atlantic waters, you can report it here. CW: We discuss 'historic population control' of basking sharks with some graphic language 34:00 - 36:00 Here is where to find us: Twitter: twitter.com/Have_A_Wild_Day Instagram: instagram.com/Have_A_Wild_Day/ Email: wildaboutconservation@gmail.com Patreon: patreon.com/wildaboutconservation Get us featured elsewhere: wildaboutconservation@gmail.com Our logo: instagram.com/sion_draws And finally don’t forget to subscribe and share us with your friends!

Hello and welcome back to the Wild About conservation Podcast. This week we speak to Robyn Shilland, Projects Manager for The Association for Coastal Ecosystem Services (ACES) which supports community-led blue carbon projects in East Africa. We dive into her work in marketing and trading blue carbon credits on behalf of the Mikoko Pamoja and Vanga Blue Forest projects. Robyn speaks to us about  the potential for conservation to deliver benefits not only for biodiversity but for local people and the climate, and we explore the challenges that community-led projects bring in delivering socially just environmental conservation and climate action. In this episode we talk about mangroves, their role in the ecosystem, the charity ACES and how it all interconnects to give a community-led sustainable approach to conservation that you may not have yet considered. Hello and welcome back to the Wild About conservation Podcast. Today we spoke to Dagmar der Weduwen, who is a Phd student at the University of St Andrews. She studies social learning and group dynamics in archerfish, which means she spends a lot of time in the lab, getting spat at by fish! We dive deep into the archer fish species, what they are, where they live, and what they do. This is an awesome species that show the potential for social learning from one another, which is just one of the questions Dagmar is looking at for her research. This is a fantastic episode if you want to learn more about this tropical fish and some of the questions researchers have to think about before delving further into a topic.
