Description

Andy Slavitt, President Biden’s Senior Advisor on COVID-19, is back from the White House to his chair on the award-winning In the Bubble podcast. Just as he took us through the pandemic, this 10-week series called Our Shot is about leading us out. It’s an insider’s guide for getting closure on what happened, how we emerge, and what must come next. Andy is joined each week by Dr. Lisa Fitzpatrick, who takes you places we couldn't go during the pandemic. Special guests include leaders we rarely get to see drop their guard the way they do on this podcast. Andy gives listeners information and inspiration from his bubble every Monday and Wednesday.

Andy begins with the big news: a vaccine for kids seems imminent. He breaks down the FDA vaccine advisory committee’s vote recommending authorization of the Pfizer vaccine, and outlines the next steps to get shots for 5-11 year-olds as soon as possible. Then, he calls up Dr. Richard Besser, President and CEO of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation. They discuss what our response to COVID could mean for future public health crises and how we come back from the entrenched, tribalistic camps we find ourselves in today. Plus, the lessons we should be taking away from the death of General Colin Powell.   Keep up with Andy on Twitter @ASlavitt and Instagram @andyslavitt.    Follow Rich @DrRichBesser on Twitter.   Joining Lemonada Premium is a great way to support our show and get bonus content. As Moderna's booster shots start to roll out across the country, Andy and Stéphane discuss the origins of Moderna's partnership with the government, how he thinks the vaccine will hold up against future variants, and the effort to vaccinate the globe. Plus, Stéphane's riveting recollections of hearing about COVID-19 for the first time in January 2020, and what else they’re working on right now to help us end the pandemic.   Keep up with Andy on Twitter @ASlavitt and Instagram @andyslavitt.    Follow Moderna @moderna_tx on Twitter.   Joining Lemonada Premium is a great way to support our show and get bonus content. They discuss why eradication of COVID is not possible, what a long-term COVID plan should include, what future variants may look like, and what vaccine innovations he wants to see and why. Eighteen months into this pandemic, we all still have lots of questions. Luckily, we can turn to our own Dr. Lisa Fitzpatrick for some answers. She covers the timing of your flu shot and booster shot (and shingles shot if you're over 50), if you should mix vaccine brands, if variants can evade tests, and even how to approach the holidays with unvaccinated family members. Andy gets back to basics with Pulitzer Prize-winning science journalist Laurie Garrett. They get into how and why viruses mutate, why the variants don't seem to be causing too much trouble for the mRNA vaccines, and how our actions are, as Laurie puts it, "aiding and abetting" COVID. Revisit this episode from June, where Andy starts by answering the one question no one else will about the Delta variant. Then, journalist Jessica Yellin joins Andy to discuss his new book Preventable. They talk about key figures like President Trump, Jared Kushner, and Dr. Deborah Birx, what lessons we need to take with us from the pandemic, and why we should feel hopeful now. Plus, you’ll hear some of the most riveting clips from the book read by actor Bradley Whitford.   Keep up with Andy on Twitter @ASlavitt and Instagram @andyslavitt.    Find Jessica Yellin on Twitter and Instagram @JessicaYellin.   Joining Lemonada Premium is a great way to support our show and get bonus content. Andy goes to Florida — ground zero in the battle over how to respond to COVID — to hear directly from kids and what they have to say about the pandemic. Two young people have been working to make adults hear their voices: 21-year-old David Hogg and 14-year-old Alana Nesser, both of Parkland, Florida. In 2018, adults failed to keep David and his classmates at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School safe when one of the worst school shootings in history occurred. A few short years later, Alana and her friends have again been left vulnerable by adults in the debate over masks. Hear what kids are saying to one another about trauma, and about what we as adults can do to understand and help.   Keep up with Andy on Twitter @ASlavitt and Instagram @andyslavitt.    Follow David @davidhogg111 and Alana @AMNesser on Twitter.   Joining Lemonada Premium is a great way to support our show and get bonus content. With 180,000 reported COVID cases in kids last week alone, and school just getting started, Andy has a vital conversation with pediatric infectious disease specialist Dr. David Kimberlin about how the Delta variant has changed everything we thought we knew about children and COVID. They cover what David's seeing on the ground in his hospital in Birmingham, the latest on vaccines for kids under 12, and how to think about the incredibly complicated issue of in-person school. Plus, what parents can do to get school districts to re-think opposition to mask requirements.   Keep up with Andy on Twitter @ASlavitt and Instagram @andyslavitt.    Joining Lemonada Premium is a great way to support our show and get bonus content. Andy, Back in October I told my wife Debbie, "If Biden wins, Andy will be heading back to DC, just watch!" "Are you serious?" she asked. "100%" I said. I'm so glad I was right, let me know if I can help in any way from my bubble in Minnesota. Love you man!😎

Hi there. Thank you for this episode. I am fully dependent on TPN (IV nutrition) and have a compromised immune system. I fully understand the triggers & fear of contracting this virus. I’m absolutely strict about how my family deals with packages, going out & maintaining social distancing. No one, other than my immediate family, has entered my home since mid-March. Not even my nurse. It’s exhausting & sad. Thanks again for keeping us informed. Stay safe, y’all!

The discussion about when things open up, one thing that was missed is the people at home following carefully to what is going on. I personally won't eat meat ever again but another reason is the cost to both animals and humans to process that meat. Humans working in those plants are being treated worse than the animals. I can't be alone so I fully expect people will start eating less meat or not at all. There is a yuck factor too when imagining how these people are able to pass this virus around so easily, all while chopping pieces of pigs into chops. Most people who imagine that and also prepare food for their children may finally get around to researching other sources of protein which are actually much cheaper for the consumer then meat products.
