Should women be ordained to leadership in the church? Heavens yes! God appointed women to positions of leadership--the prophet Miriam, the judge Deborah, the disciples Joanna and Susanna--so why are there so many denominations that won't ordain women? Join the conversation. We will be speaking with our resident feminist Bible scholar, Dr. Jenn Bird, about this question. She offers a new and surprising take on Jesus' relationship to Mary and Martha plus so much more. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprogressivesacred)
We are back with part 2 of our Science and Faith series! Can you love both science and God? Can you be religious and reasonable too? Many people assume that to be religious is to reject science. But we believe otherwise--that science is a gift from God who gives us the powers of reason and observation that science uses to make the world a better place. In this episode, we talk with Karl Giberson, PhD. Karl is a physicist who has written numerous books on science and religion such as The Wonder of the Universe, Seven Glorious Days, and Saving the Original Sinner. Celebrating both mainstream science and a deep progressive faith, Karl has always experienced his love for science as a calling from God.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprogressivesacred)

Christ Country Club

What was Jesus about? Was he trying to start an exclusive club or was he trying to create a new world of inclusivity? These questions have dogged Christianity for millennia. Some Christians insist that God’s love is exclusive, so that only certain types of believers are saved. Scriptures such as John 14.6, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me” are often used as a tribalist form of salvation.  In the Gospel of Luke, Jesus mission and ministry is depicted differently. Jesus doesn’t see himself as an inclusive club leader, instead he interprets his work as liberating and prophetic. At the very beginning of his preaching career, Jesus declares:“The Spirit of the Lord is upon me,    because he has anointed me        to bring good news to the poor.He has sent me to proclaim release to the captives    and recovery of sight to the blind,        to let the oppressed go free.” -Luke 4:18How has the elevation of one exclusivist Bible passage (John 14.6) distorted the way we perceive Christianity and even Jesus himself? How would our faith change if Jesus’ message of liberation (Luke 4:18-19) was plastered on billboards instead? Join The Progressive Sacred for a conversation about Jesus and the church, about universalism and tribalism, and how we can reclaim Jesus’ radical love.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprogressivesacred)
Have you ever seen the memes that claim Jesus was a socialist? Or did you hear what the current Pope said one Christmas Eve, “Today we say thou shalt not to an economy of exclusion and inequality”?  Jesus wasn’t a part of any political party nor did he elevate one economic theory over the next. Yet he did challenge socio-cultural structures and embraced change. Listen in as the PTJ crew joined by guest Brian Hughes talk as to why we claim Jesus was and is a progressive. Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprogressivesacred)
Do you think that the words "progressive" and "Christianity" don't go together? If you do, then that's probably because conservative Christianity has dominated our media for decades. But the truth is that the Christian church in America has always been at the forefront of progressive social movements including abolition, labor, civil rights, and environmentalism, just to name a few. Learn what the progressive Christian movement looks like today and how it is more inclusive and far reaching than you would imagine. In this episode we also give a special shout out to progressivechristianity.org so click the link and check them out!Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprogressivesacred)
A Preacher, a theologian, and a guy named Julio walk into a bar….Meet the three people who make up the PTJ Crew. That would be the Preacher (Abby), the Theologian (Jon Paul) and a guy named Julio. Somehow these three folks have decided that working on a podcast together on progressive topics is exactly what they  need to be doing. But how and why is something more complicated to explain. Listen to this podcast to learn a bit more behind the origin of this crew and the development of the Progressive Sacred.Support the show (https://www.patreon.com/theprogressivesacred)
