🌏Article Adidas put a billboard that women could swim in on a beach in Dubai for three days, calling it the first in the world. The five meter tall swimming pool on Dubai's Kite Beach could hold just over 43,500 liters of water — or about 163 baths, reports The Drum. To turn it into a billboard, one side was transparent, allowing people to see swimmers inside of it. Adidas invited women to swim in the billboard, making them the stars of the advertisement. Videos of the swimmers were also shown on a large screen in the Dubai Mall. According to a survey done by YouGov for Adidas, only 12% of women in the Middle East are 100% comfortable wearing a swimsuit at a public beach or pool. The research also found that 59% of women aged from 18 to 42 in the UAE feel that the media creates an "unattainable" idea of how female swimmers should look. The billboard and the survey are both parts of Adidas' "Beyond the Surface" campaign to get more women swimming. The campaign is for the company's new swimsuits that can cover the whole body for women who prefer to show less skin. Adidas opened the billboard pool to normal women, but some famous women from the Middle East also took part. The first Saudi Arabian woman to climb Mount Everest, Raha Moharrak went for a swim in the billboard. Dareen Barbar, a Lebanese athlete who lost a leg at 15, was also included in the campaign.

(Neil) Article A police university in Liaoning, northeast China, has got a lot of attention for the unusual way it finds new homes for its failed police dogs. Instead of getting people to adopt them, it's selling the dogs in an online auction at a starting price of about $30. The most recent auction of 54 dogs was on July 7. Most of them failed to become police dogs because they are cowardly, reports the South China Morning Post. Along with other information about them, the reasons the dogs failed were published on the official website of the Criminal Investigation Police University of China, which manages the police dog school. Some of the dogs, which were mostly German Shepherds and Belgian Malinois, were described as too old or too small. Other reasons included having ears that were soft or wouldn't stand up, not being strong enough, or not biting when told to by their trainers, reported CNN and Vice. Videos of the dogs were shown before the auction began and the winners could get their dogs on the same day. The new owners also had to sign a document saying they would not sell or give away the dogs, and would take good care of them, CNN reported. The announcement of the July 7 auction got 160 million views on the Chinese social media site Weibo, according to CNN. Many joked that they could sympathize with the dogs as they know what it's like to be unable to meet high standards. (Neil) 🌏Article You might expect that the more a country spends on its healthcare, the better it would be. But a new study says this might not be true. In fact, research from The Commonwealth Fund found that the US had the lowest performance of those studied, but spent the most money on healthcare. The researchers compared the way that healthcare is provided in 11 high-income countries: Australia, Canada, France, Germany, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Norway, Sweden, Switzerland, the UK and the US. They compared each country's healthcare across five areas: access, process, efficiency, equality and outcomes. The study found that Norway had the best healthcare performance in the group, followed by the Netherlands and Australia. The US came in last place, with Canada and Switzerland also in the bottom three. However, in 2019, while Norway spent 10.5% of its gross domestic product on healthcare, the US spent 16.8% — more than any other country in the study. Yet the US was the lowest in all areas except process. Four differences might explain why the US got the worst result for the most money. The top performing countries provided universal healthcare at a lower cost, spent more money making sure that all people could access important healthcare services, didn't spend as much time and money on management, and spent more money on social services. However, the study also said that all countries can still improve and should try to learn from each other. For example, the US was better than many countries at getting people to have the flu vaccine.
🌏Article A famous bar on the island of Key West, Florida, has had its 40th Ernest Hemingway look-alike competition. The contest takes place each year at Sloppy Joe's Bar, which Hemingway once frequented, though it was cancelled in 2020 due to the coronavirus pandemic. Over three nights, more than 130 men — all with beards and dressed like Hemingway — took part in the competition. They were judged by previous winners, including Joe Maxey from Tennessee who won in 2019. The winner of the 2021 competition was 63-year-old Zach Taylor from Georgia. Like Hemingway, Taylor loves to hunt and fish. But what made Taylor's win special was that his father-in-law, who has since died, won the competition in 2000. The look-alike competition is part of Key West's Hemingway Days festival, which takes place around the writer's birthday on July 21, and celebrates his life and work. The festival also includes a short story contest, which was won this year by Madison Bakalar from Massachusetts with her story So This Is How We Go. Bakalar beat 784 other stories from American and international writers. Hemingway Days includes a number of other events too, such as the Key West Marlin Tournament and a literary walking tour of the island. 🌏Words & Phrases look-alike相貌相近的人 frequent常去 judge裁判 🌏References Article: Engoo Daily News (https://engoo.com.tw/app/daily-news/article/hemingway-look-alike-contest-returns-to-florida-island/ca4lDO43EeuJwUfe30tUsw) (https://engoo.com.tw/) Picture: JUPE Design + Canva (https://www.instagram.com/jupeseries/?hl=en) (https://www.canva.com/) #每周二、四更新 #更進一步語言學習點選 語言學習頻道 ----- 英語節目主持人:陳彣 (Neil) 越南語節目主持人:阮紅蓉、王浩宇 韓語節目主持人:鄭美善 德語節目主持人:梅可雅 Friday Happy Hour in Formosa節目主持人:Beverly ----- Apple|Spotify|Google|KKBOX|Fistory|SoundOn 搜尋訂閱:英語Follow me ----- ▍教育電臺 ▍官網:https://bit.ly/39ISswV ▍粉絲團:https://www.facebook.com/educationradio ▍線上收聽:https://bit.ly/3cyxBhE ▍Channel+精選節目:http://bit.ly/499xCn5 Powered by Firstory Hosting
🌏Article A book has been anonymously returned to a library in northeastern Pennsylvania, 50 years after it was borrowed. According to local newspaper The Citizens' Voice, the copy of Coins You Can Collect by Burton Hobson arrived in late July at the Plymouth Public Library in Luzerne County. The book came with a letter and a $20 bill. The letter, which was written as though the book itself was speaking, said "Fifty years ago (yes 50!), a little girl checked me out of this library in 1971. At this time, she didn't know [her family] were going to move from Plymouth." "As you can see, she took very good care of me," the letter said, explaining that the borrower took the book with them whenever they moved house. The rest of letter was written in the voice of the borrower, who said that she meant to return the book many times. "This became a running joke in my family. Each time we moved, they always asked me if I packed 'the Plymouth Book,'" she wrote. Keller also said that both the letter and book will soon be displayed at the library. 🌏Words & Phrases anonymously匿名地 copy副本 check out借出 🌏References Article: Engoo Daily News (https://engoo.com.tw/app/daily-news/article/book-returned-to-library-after-50-years/ApDk5PacEeuI1mtw253Q0w) (https://engoo.com.tw/) Picture: JUPE Design + Canva (https://www.instagram.com/jupeseries/?hl=en) (https://www.canva.com/) #每周二、四更新 #更進一步語言學習點選 語言學習頻道 ----- 英語節目主持人:陳彣 (Neil) 越南語節目主持人:阮紅蓉、王浩宇 韓語節目主持人:鄭美善 德語節目主持人:梅可雅 Friday Happy Hour in Formosa節目主持人:Beverly ----- Apple|Spotify|Google|KKBOX|Fistory|SoundOn 搜尋訂閱:英語Follow me ----- ▍教育電臺 ▍官網:https://bit.ly/39ISswV ▍粉絲團:https://www.facebook.com/educationradio ▍線上收聽:https://bit.ly/3cyxBhE ▍Channel+精選節目:http://bit.ly/499xCn5 Powered by Firstory Hosting
🌏Article Italy has given the world great art, music and food — and it's given the English language lots of vocabulary. Here are just a few Italian words you'll hear in English. If you drink coffee, you might speak some Italian already. "Espresso" is borrowed from Italian, and comes from the verb "to press." Espresso is made by pushing, or pressing, hot water or steam through coffee grounds to make a strong, small drink. If you like milk in your coffee, you might ask your "barista" — Italian for the person making drinks in a cafe — for a "cappuccino." The Italians named this drink — made of espresso and hot milk — after Capuchin monks, whose clothes were the same color as the drink. Baristas might have to occasionally deal with "divas," or people who think they are very important and who are difficult to please. This comes from the Italian word for a famous female singer. Italian has also given us the word for drawings and writing on walls and other public places: "graffiti." This word comes from the Italian for a scratch. Some people might use graffiti to share their "motto." This is another Italian loanword that refers to a phrase used again and again that tells others what a person or organization believes is important. There's only one word to end this article with: "finale." In Italian, this just means "the end," and in English "finale" describes the last part of a show or series — especially if the end is very exciting! 🌏Words & Phrases borrow借用 steam蒸氣 strong強烈的 References Article: Engoo Daily News (https://engoo.com.tw/app/daily-news/article/common-italian-words-used-in-english/Ac_retNsEeupMbusiTKyIA) (https://engoo.com.tw/) #每周二、四更新 #更進一步語言學習點選 語言學習頻道 ----- 英語節目主持人:陳彣 (Neil) 越南語節目主持人:阮紅蓉、王浩宇 韓語節目主持人:鄭美善 德語節目主持人:梅可雅 Friday Happy Hour in Formosa節目主持人:Beverly ----- Apple|Spotify|Google|KKBOX|Fistory|SoundOn 搜尋訂閱:英語Follow me ----- ▍教育電臺 ▍官網:https://bit.ly/39ISswV ▍粉絲團:https://www.facebook.com/educationradio ▍線上收聽:https://bit.ly/3cyxBhE ▍Channel+精選節目:http://bit.ly/499xCn5 Powered by Firstory Hosting

🌏Article The most common language in New Zealand is English, but it's not the country's only official language. Since 1987, te reo Māori — the Māori language — has also been one of New Zealand's official languages. Until the middle of the 1800s, Māori was actually the most used language in the country. But as more English-speakers came to live in New Zealand, it started to be mostly used by the indigenous Māori people. Then, in 1867, the New Zealand government created schools for Māori children where lessons were taught in English and speaking Māori was discouraged. For a long time, Māori children were even punished or beaten for speaking their language at school. As time went on, fewer people spoke Māori. However, in the 1970s, Māori people started working to bring the language back. In 1978, the first bilingual school was opened in New Zealand, teaching in both English and Māori. In 1983, the country got its first Māori-owned, Māori-language radio station. According to government data, only 4% of New Zealanders — about 186,000 people — could speak Māori in 2018. However, there is growing interest in using the language in normal life. In fact, many New Zealanders, including the country's prime minister Jacinda Ardern, often use common Māori phrases, like "kia ora" instead of "hello." There are now over 20 Māori radio stations in New Zealand — or Aotearoa as the country is called in Māori. 🌏Article If you want to know about something, you can ask for "info" instead of "information". Businesses often talk about "ads" instead of "advertisements." Also, we usually say "gym," not "gymnasium". Using shorter versions of English words and phrases like this can help you sound more fluent. Here are a few more that are easy to add to your "vocabulary" — or "vocab." If you wanted to know what "vegetarian" food a restaurant has, you could ask for a "veggie" menu. "Veggies" or “veg” is also a shorter way to say "vegetables". Some short phrases can also be made into a single word. For example, both "want to" and "want a" can become "wanna," and instead of "give me," you can say "gimme." If someone asks what you are "going to" do next weekend, you can answer, "I'm gonna relax." Or if you "don't know" what you're gonna do, you could say, "I dunno yet." "Whaddya" is what we get when we make "what," "do," and "you" into one word — used for example, like this: "Whaddya wanna have for dinner?" These short versions of phrases should really only be used in conversations. They shouldn't be used in work emails though — that wouldn’t be very professional. Actually, "professional" can be shortened to "pro," and used like this; "I wanna be a pro soccer player one day!" And other adjectives can be shortened too. "Comfortable" can become "comfy," and if you're in the UK, you might hear "brill" instead of "brilliant." ,您可以說「I dunno yet」。 🌏Words & Phrases advertisement廣告 version版本 fluent流利的 🌏References Article: Engoo Daily News (https://engoo.com.tw/app/daily-news/article/wanna-know-how-to-shorten-english-vocab/6i1HlKhYEeu3rcPFudvIqw) (https://engoo.com.tw/) Picture: JUPE Design + Canva (https://www.instagram.com/jupeseries/?hl=en) (https://www.canva.com/) 👍意見調查:https://www.surveycake.com/s/BzB6o #每周二、四更新 #更進一步語言學習點選 語言學習頻道 ----- 英語節目主持人:陳彣 (Neil) 越南語節目主持人:阮紅蓉、王浩宇 韓語節目主持人:鄭美善 德語節目主持人:梅可雅 Friday Happy Hour in Formosa節目主持人:Beverly ----- Apple|Spotify|Google|KKBOX|Fistory|SoundOn 搜尋訂閱:英語Follow me ----- ▍教育電臺 ▍官網:https://bit.ly/39ISswV ▍粉絲團:https://www.facebook.com/educationradio ▍線上收聽:https://bit.ly/3cyxBhE ▍Channel+精選節目:http://bit.ly/499xCn5 Powered by Firstory Hosting

🌏Article Have you ever heard someone complain that their job is killing them? According to a new study, they might actually be right. The study by the World Health Organization (WHO) and the International Labour Organization has found that working long hours is killing hundreds of thousands of people around the world every year. According to the study, working more than 55 hours a week was responsible for an estimated 745,194 deaths from heart disease and stroke in 2016. People also lost 23.3 million years to early deaths or disability because of heart disease and strokes caused by long working hours. That same year, more than 488 million people around the world worked for more than 55 hours a week, the study found. It also found that people from the Western Pacific, South-East Asians, men, and older people were the groups that were most likely to die or become disabled because of long working hours. Dr Maria Neira of the WHO said that working 55 hours a week is dangerous for people's health, and that governments, employers and employees need to "wake up" to the fact that working long hours can cause early death. The WHO has said that governments can help to protect workers' health by making laws that stop employers from making their employees work extra hours. It also said that employees could agree to share working hours with each other so that they do not do more than 55 in a week. 🌏Words & Phrases responsible負責可靠的 estimate估計 stroke中風 References Article: Engoo Daily News (https://engoo.com.tw/app/daily-news/article/long-working-hours-kill-thousands-of-people-a-year/1Tnmkr0YEeuy1qvhf01lxQ) (https://engoo.com.tw/) Picture: JUPE Design + Canva (https://www.instagram.com/jupeseries/?hl=en) (https://www.canva.com/) 👍意見調查:https://www.surveycake.com/s/BzB6o #每周二、四更新 #更進一步語言學習點選 語言學習頻道 ----- 英語節目主持人:陳彣 (Neil) 越南語節目主持人:阮紅蓉、王浩宇 韓語節目主持人:鄭美善 德語節目主持人:梅可雅 Friday Happy Hour in Formosa節目主持人:Beverly ----- Apple|Spotify|Google|KKBOX|Fistory|SoundOn 搜尋訂閱:英語Follow me ----- ▍教育電臺 ▍官網:https://bit.ly/39ISswV ▍粉絲團:https://www.facebook.com/educationradio ▍線上收聽:https://bit.ly/3cyxBhE ▍Channel+精選節目:http://bit.ly/499xCn5 Powered by Firstory Hosting

🌏Words & Phrases anonymously匿名地 copy副本 check out借出 🌏References Article: Engoo Daily News (https://engoo.com.tw/app/daily-news/article/book-returned-to-library-after-50-years/ApDk5PacEeuI1mtw253Q0w) (https://engoo.com.tw/) Picture: JUPE Design + Canva (https://www.instagram.com/jupeseries/?hl=en) (https://www.canva.com/) 👍意見調查:https://www.surveycake.com/s/BzB6o #每周二、四更新 #更進一步語言學習點選 語言學習頻道 ----- 英語節目主持人:陳彣 (Neil) 越南語節目主持人:阮紅蓉、王浩宇 韓語節目主持人:鄭美善 德語節目主持人:梅可雅 Friday Happy Hour in Formosa節目主持人:Beverly ----- Apple|Spotify|Google|KKBOX|Fistory|SoundOn 搜尋訂閱:英語Follow me ----- ▍教育電臺 ▍官網:https://bit.ly/39ISswV ▍粉絲團:https://www.facebook.com/educationradio ▍線上收聽:https://bit.ly/3cyxBhE ▍Channel+精選節目:http://bit.ly/499xCn5 Powered by Firstory Hosting
