When Family Matters

When Family Matters

In this podcast episode, Sarah is joined by Kelly Venkiah, the Founder and Lead Consultant at Venkiah HR, who participated in Sarah's Bootcamp in May 2023. Kelly's professional background includes 18 years in the corporate realm at Amazon, where she held various roles in both general and specialised capacities, eventually leading to international assignments. In 2020, she embarked on the journey of starting a family, welcoming her first son, followed by a second in 2022. During her maternity leave, Kelly made the pivotal decision to transition into HR consulting, a career move that had been on her radar and now felt opportune given her evolving family dynamics. For Kelly, the appeal of HR consulting, like many working parents, lies in the flexibility it offers. Managing the health challenges of her youngest son, Miles, who requires extended hospital stays, Kelly finds solace in the ability to work from any location as needed. Initiating one's consultancy presents inherent challenges; self-belief is crucial, and imposter syndrome may emerge. Kelly highlights the importance of creating a sound business strategy and avoiding overcommitting to ensure success. The Bootcamp experience has been a lifeline for Kelly, providing a supportive community from both fellow participants and the Leap into team. Kelly's advice to podcast listeners contemplating a career shift into HR consulting is straightforward – envision the life you desire. Consider your aspirations not only in the present and financially but also project where you want to be in 5-10 years and then reverse engineer your path to get there. Let's delve into the realm of mental health today! In our discussion, we'll explore the prevalent challenges surrounding mental well-being, offering practical strategies for navigating and fostering mental health, particularly within a professional context.Recognising mental health as a cornerstone of overall well-being is paramount, especially for business owners. Its impact extends to decision-making, creativity, and relationships with both employees and clients. The rigors of work challenges, stress, and long hours can adversely affect mental health, both professionally and personally. Creating a supportive environment is crucial. As a business owner, empathy plays a vital role, given that clients and collaborators may also require support.Joining Sarah today are Natalie Ellis, the award-winning founder of Rebox HR, and Matt Young, from Who Needs Instructions, also known as 'The Journalling Guy'.Natalie Ellis, who established Rebox HR in 2020, shares her journey of success and the importance of shedding the metaphorical mask that business owners often wear. While accolades were attributed to the business, recognising and celebrating personal achievements is equally vital.Having started her business after experiencing burnout in her corporate role, Natalie emphasises the significance of acknowledging signs of mental health challenges and seeking help. Her book, 'Launch Your HR Career,' is available on her website, with a second book due for release next February. Our second guest, Matt Young, of Who Needs Instructions, a not for profit business, and The Journalling Guy focuses on men's mental health, and shares the alarming statistic that 75% of suicide rates are men over 50, often due to suppressed feelings. Matt's initiatives include free events, walks, night hikes, breakfast meetups, and a supportive WhatsApp community, creating a safe space for men to openly discuss their thoughts and feelings.'The Journalling Guy' is an online course, promoting the transformative power of journaling, both online and in-person in Devon.Matt now runs The Journalling Guy online course, and locally in person in Devon.LInks:Connect with Sarah Hamilton-Gill FCIPD on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/SarahHGLIVisit our website: https://bit.ly/WebLeapIntoJoin our Facebook Business Growth group: https://bit.ly/FBHRGrowConnect with Natalie Ellis of Rebox HR on LinkedIn: https://bit.ly/LINatalieEllisConnect with Matt Young of Who Needs Instruction/The Journalling Guy: https://bit.ly/LIMattYoung
In this episode, Sarah Hamilton-Gill is joined by Nikki Masterman, MD and Founder of Inspired HR Ltd in the UK, and Tracey Corea, Founder and Principal Consultant of Robertson HR in the USA, who both attended our Corfu Retreat in September 2023.Their initial expectations of the retreat were somewhat different from the profound experiences they ultimately encountered. Nikki embarked on her consultancy journey eight years ago, experiencing rapid growth, bringing with it long hours, along with the challenges brought about by working in HR throughout the pandemic. This journey left her on the brink of burnout. In contrast, Tracey is at the beginning of her entrepreneurial voyage, with her business just one year old, eagerly seeking opportunities to learn and collaborate. Nikki arrived at the retreat armed with an extensive to-do list and lofty aspirations. Did she accomplish everything on her list? No, but what she gained was immeasurable. In this episode, Nikki reveals that she's typically a very private person who avoids vulnerability. However, the nurturing and supportive environment of the retreat allowed her to let down her guard. Both Tracey and Nikki share common words when discussing their retreat experiences: rejuvenation, refocusing, relaxation, motivation, reenergizing, creativity, and reflection. These words encapsulate the essence of what we all sometimes require – a pause to contemplate, reassess our goals, and subsequently regain focus on our path forward. If you are listening to this and thinking about taking the leap into HR consulting, but not sure if it’s for you, we have a great way for you to find out, and it will only cost you £25 (plus vat). Today our guest is Ryan Chandra, HR Consultant and Co-Founder, PeopleWise Solutions, based in Canada.Ryan shares with us why he chose to leave the corporate world, and the difference it has made. Being an active dad, and involved parent, he wanted to be more present for things like the school pick up and drop offs, and attend other school functions. He also talks about being a millennial, and that he hasn’t been in any one role for more than 5 years. He wanted to take on the work that he really enjoyed doing, and likes the variety that it in turn brings.Having decided to leave the corporate world, Ryan decided to go into a partnership with Ram, who he had known for over 12 years. With a differing skill set, Ram brings the strategic and leadership development side to the business, whereas Ryan is more transactional. He believes that this in turn means they can bring to the table a wide range of services to their clients.Ethics and values for business owners is paramount, and growing, learning and acknowledging is essential.
