As physicians, we shoulder so much responsibility day in and day out in our profession. When was the last time we prioritized play? 🧠 Our education and socialization create left brain hypertrophy.🧠 Play reconnects us to the right brain.🧠 Play is a homeostatic event, just like sleep and eating.🧠 Play helps us become whole human beings and better physicians.I loved this conversation with Dr. Kristin Yates, OB-GYN, life coach, host of adventure retreats, wife, and mom to 3 daughters. She shares so many gems. Physicians come from diverse backgrounds and have many passions.  This is a special 2-part interview series to celebrate the Fourth of July at the Dare to Dream Physician.   I interview an extraordinary guest who shares his poignant immigrant story and honestly reflects on the challenges and gains he has experienced from childhood to adolescence, and now in adulthood.  We dive into profound reflections on:❤️ Recognizing signs of life transition.❤️ Embracing both loyalty to and boundaries with our loved ones.❤️ How we easily default to living life running from past trauma and fears.❤️Taking a break to discover ourselves and our passions.❤️ What results when we are running toward our dreams despite our fears.❤️ How perspective changes everything.  Pause, look up, and expand our view.I love this phenomenal conversation with Dr. Shehzad Batliwala, who is an ophthalmologist and entrepreneur.  He is the man behind Visionary Doc, with multiple passions in medicine, politics, technology, and space.Listen to part 2 of this inspiring conversation on this week's episode of the Dare to Dream Physician Podcast!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️If you love the Dare to Dream Physician Podcast, send us feedback via DM or Rate and Review us on Apple Podcasts! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Dare to Dream Physician Resources:Dare to Dream Physician, Life Planning for Physicianshttps://daretodreamphysician.comDare to Dream Physician on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/daretodreamphysician/DreamPhysician on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/dreamphysician/Dr. Shehzad Batliwala and Visionary Doc:Visionary Dochttps://visionarydoc.com/@visionary_doc on Twitterhttps://twitter.com/visionary_doc@visionary.doc on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/visionary.docf

Physicians care deeply about many issues that affect our patients, society, and the world at large.  Legacy building is often an important part of the Life Plan.  One way to create impact and build a legacy is through philanthropy.  Yet we may have limiting beliefs that are holding us back.  Do physicians wait to give until we feel financially and socially secure? Isn't philanthropy an activity reserved for the ultra-privileged multi-millionaires or billionaires?  Physicians already have to shoulder a large student debt burden, job insecurity, and burnout.    How can physicians start to create an impact in the world through our everyday decisions?❤️ Examine what big topics we care about and dig deeper into our why.❤️ Consider contributing to local causes, and get to know the people and organizations first-hand. ❤️ Start with small acts, rather than be overwhelmed by all-or-none thinking. No need to sell all our investments or stop all investing in index funds. ❤️ Look for opportunities to create impact.  We have the power in deciding how we direct the flow of money, not only through donating but also through spending and investing.I loved this inspiring conversation with Dr. Recha Bergstrom, who is a mom of three, wife, entrepreneur, and philanthropist.  Her husband is a winemaker and together they make award-winning wines in Santa Cruz Mountains – Sandar & Hem Wines.  Recha is also the founder of The Physician Philanthropist, where she helps doctors learn how to donate effectively, invest responsibly and spend thoughtfully to maximize the positive impact they want to have in the world while maximizing their own benefits.   She has established The Physician Philanthropy Impact Fund, offers two comprehensive online courses "The Physician Philanthropist Course" on developing a giving plan and "Impactful Investing for Doctors" to help doctors align their investment portfolios with their values, and shares her blog "Intentional Money for Doctors" on simple ways to start.Listen to part 2 of the impactful interview on this week's episode of the Dare to Dream Physician Podcast!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️If you love the Dare to Dream Physician Podcast, send us feedback via DM or Rate and Review us on Apple Podcasts! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Dare to Dream Physician Resources:Dare to Dream Physician, Life Planning for Physicianshttps://daretodreamphysician.comDare to Dream Physician on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/daretodreamphysician/DreamPhysician on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/dreamphysician/Dr. Recha Bergstrom and The Physician Philanthropist Resources:The Physician Philanthropist Websitehttps://www.thephysicianphilanthropist.comFacebook and Instagram @physicianphilanthropistPrivate FB group for doctorshttps://www.facebook.com/groups/thephysicianphilanthropist

Isn't philanthropy an activity reserved for the ultra-privileged multi-millionaires or billionaires?  Physicians already have to shoulder a large student debt burden, job insecurity, and burnout.    How can physicians start to reap the joy of giving and start to contribute to issues we deeply care about now?❤️ When we as physicians are on the receiving end of charity, we experience firsthand the impact of giving and fundamentally change how we look at giving.❤️ Why the amount we give is not as important as just the act, using the example of Giving Circles that started with a small group of moms who would do a potluck and pooled the money they would have otherwise spent for a meal at a restaurant and donated that to charity each month. This one group grew to hundreds of chapters around the United States.❤️ How the act of giving is radically separate from one's income or net worth. I loved this inspiring conversation with Dr. She has established The Physician Philanthropy Impact Fund, offers two comprehensive online courses "The Physician Philanthropist Course" on developing a giving plan and "Impactful Investing for Doctors" to help doctors align their investment portfolios with their values, and shares her blog "Intentional Money for Doctors" on simple ways to start.Listen to part 1 of the impactful interview on this week's episode of the Dare to Dream Physician Podcast!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️If you love the Dare to Dream Physician Podcast, send us feedback via DM or Rate and Review us on Apple Podcasts! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Dare to Dream Physician Resources:Dare to Dream Physician, Life Planning for Physicianshttps://daretodreamphysician.comDare to Dream Physician on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/daretodreamphysician/DreamPhysician on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/dreamphysician/Dr. Recha Bergstrom and The Physician Philanthropist Resources:The Physician Philanthropist Websitehttps://www.thephysicianphilanthropist.com Facebook and Instagram @physicianphilanthropistPrivate FB group for doctors https://www.facebook.com/groups/thephysicianphilanthropist
Money is often the limiting factor physicians cite in achieving our dreams.  Our relationship with money is more important than our current net worth. No matter the number, money can either trap us or liberate us.  How do we make money work for us?💪 Examine our current flow of money and eliminate items that don't matter to us anymore.  Continually re-evaluating and choosing to spend money in a way that adds value to our lives.💪 Recognize financial knowledge is important but can only bring results when accompanied by taking action.  Work on our minds and carefully choose the words we tell ourselves so we become action-takers. 💪 Redefine our relationship with money.  We have inherent worth as human beings.  There is nothing we can do, earn or offer that will add more value to us.  If we ask for a raise and don't get it, that answer doesn't diminish us.  If we lose all our money, that doesn't diminish us.  Separating our worth from money gives us the freedom to gain and enjoy wealth.I loved this profound conversation with Dr. Latifat Akintade, who is a GI doc, money coach, founder and CEO of MoneyFitMD, wife and mama to 3 girls, and who I admire as "a genius at life" because she is living in alignment with her core values and her dreams.Listen to part 2 of the eye-opening interview on this week's episode of the Dare to Dream Physician Podcast!❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️If you love the Dare to Dream Physician Podcast, send us feedback via DM or Rate and Review us on Apple Podcasts! ❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️Dare to Dream Physician Resources:Dare to Dream Physician, Life Planning for Physicianshttps://daretodreamphysician.comDare to Dream Physician on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/daretodreamphysician/DreamPhysician on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/dreamphysician/Dr. Latifat Akintade and MoneyFitMD Resources:MoneyFitMD Website (The Money School, Podcast, Blog)https://moneyfitmd.comMoneyFitMD on Facebookhttps://www.facebook.com/MoneyfitMDMoneyFitMD on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/moneyfitmd/

Most physicians have suffered alone and long by the time they decide to seek help for their mental health.  How do we prevent physicians from getting to that dark place? What can all of us do right now to optimize our mental well-being? ❤️ We examine our language and assumptions. Humans don't have a binary distribution of mental states, we are not either purely mentally well or mentally disordered. ❤️ We start viewing mental health on a continuum.  Where we lie on the spectrum is dynamic throughout our lifetime. ❤️ We stay humble and recognize none of us are immune from developing severe mental illness. ❤️ We stay optimistic and believe all of us can learn tools to optimize our mental well-being throughout our lifetime, not just when we are unwell.❤️ We intentionally dedicate our time and energy to pursuing activities that bring happiness and fulfillment. ❤️ We work on our minds to build resilience and maximize our full potential.❤️ We put our resources to create impact and contribute to the world in a way that's meaningful to us.I adored Part 2 of this phenomenal conversation with Dr. Jeannie Lawrence, a  board-certified psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and coach, who founded the program Emotional Mastery for Women Physicians.Tune in to this week's Dare to Dream Physician Podcast episode to hear gem after gem after gem on physician mental well-being!Dare to Dream Physician Resources:Dare to Dream Physician, Life Planning for Physicians https://daretodreamphysician.comDare to Dream Physician on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/daretodreamphysician/DreamPhysician on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/dreamphysician/Resources for Dr. Jeannie Lawrence:Jeannie Lawrence, MD Website at https://www.jeannielawrencemd.com/@dr.jeannielawrence on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/dr.jeannielawrencemd/
Both physicians and the lay public often feel puzzled when they read an article highlighting a physician who dies by suicide.  But she seemed to have it all: a high-power job, a fancy house, a caring spouse, beautiful children, and so much going for her.  How come it ended this way?As physicians, we excel at keeping it together at work.  We do this at all costs until we have nothing left.  This expectation is part of our training and socialization.  How do we change the culture?  We do so by starting the conversation:❤️ Physicians are experiencing record-high rates of burnout and high rates of suicide.❤️ Physicians have historically looked down on the field of psychiatry, to the point of discouraging bright medical students from pursuing it.❤️ Physicians may not be underprivileged but are underserved in the area of mental health due to cultural and licensing barriers.❤️ Most physicians lack insight into their mood disorders but may notice they feel overwhelmed or distant from their loved ones, or turn to food and alcohol to cope.❤️ Physicians normalize struggle and overwhelm in their personal lives, but normalization doesn't equate to lack of a problem.I loved part 1 of this important conversation with Dr. Jeannie Lawrence, a psychiatrist, psychotherapist, and coach, who founded the program on Emotional Mastery for Women Physicians.Tune in to this week's Dare to Dream Physician Podcast episode, and stay tuned for part 2! Imagine waking up each day brimming with energy.  We no longer feel a burden, but are able to enjoy a lightness in our mind and body.  We have the emotional and physical reserves to face whatever comes today.  We feel optimistic about what we can accomplish not only in the next 6 months, but in the next 6, 16, and 36 years.  How do we cultivate the energy to live our dreams? As physicians, we demand a lot out of our bodies, whether it’s taking 30-hour call shifts, seeing a full day of patients back-to-back without a food or bathroom break, or even intensely working out for the sake of losing 10 lbs.  We don’t often think about giving back to our bodies.  How can we develop a loving relationship with our bodies?  Do we believe in the possibility of achieving an authentic body? This is the path to optimal health:💪 Know our “why” and honor it.💪 Stop blaming our bodies for not being enough.💪 Decide that our health is non-negotiable.💪 Commit to being kind to our bodies. 💪 Be curious and build awareness of our bodies.💪 Honor our unique body types.💪 Acknowledge our emotions and sit with them.💪 Fall in love with the journey, rather than obsessing over the result. This was an absolutely phenomenal conversation with Dr. Ali Novitsky, a certified life coach and neonatologist, who is the Founder and CEO of Life Coaching for Women Physicians.Tune in to this week’s Dare to Dream Physician Podcast episode! Dare to Dream Physician Resources:Dare to Dream Physician, Life Planning for Physicians https://daretodreamphysician.comDare to Dream Physician on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/daretodreamphysician/DreamPhysician on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/dreamphysician/Resources for Dr. Ali Novitsky:Join Jump Start CME program (last day to enroll on 5/8/22)https://www.goals-society.com/g-o-a-l-s-societyCoaching for Women Physicians Programs and Podcasthttps://www.lifecoachingforwomenphysicians.com
How valuable would it be for us to wake up each day feeling excited to go to work? What if we feel confident in working out any conflict that may arise with our colleagues in the workplace? With a burnout rate of 40%, physicians often don’t feel these goals are possible to achieve. Yet there are physicians who are finding immense professional fulfillment at work.  What did they do differently?  How do we proceed to find our dream job in today’s challenging healthcare environment?💪 Before a job search, start with examining what’s important to us, be honest and go deep.💪 Once we know what we want, find positions that have at least 80% of what we are looking for, with the other 20% not being deal-breakers.💪 Know that the number one most important feature of any practice is the people. Utilize every opportunity to get to know them. 💪 Stay in curiosity mode during the search process. 💪 Don’t be afraid to have tough conversations. Statistics do not have to get in the way of our dreams.  Physicians can find or create opportunities for work that bring growth and satisfaction.  Professional fulfillment does not exist in a bubble. Workplace culture is an important element to consider when we are seeking to live our dream life.I loved this empowering conversation with Dr. Lara Hochman, a Family Physician, who is also the Founder and CEO of Happy Day Health, a matchmaking service to connect amazing doctors with high-quality physician-own practices.Go to this week’s Dare to Dream Physician Podcast episode to hear the second part!Dare to Dream Physician Resources:Dare to Dream Physician, Life Planning for Physicians https://daretodreamphysician.comDare to Dream Physician on Facebook https://www.facebook.com/daretodreamphysician/DreamPhysician on Instagramhttps://www.instagram.com/dreamphysician/Resources for Dr. Lara Hochman:Happy Day Healthhttp://happydayhealth.coLara Hochman MD on LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/larahochman/
After sacrificing more than a decade of our lives to obtain clinical privileges, many physicians are unfortunately feeling stuck in our jobs and unable to help patients. As physicians, we dedicate our time and energy to advocating for patients. Yet if we fail to advocate for ourselves at critical times, we may end up in workplace cultures that create barriers to practicing medicine.  Rather than putting our heads down and accepting the status quo, we can each do our part in improving the workplace culture by:💪 Seeing the value of our own time, energy, and talent.💪 Approaching every job interview with curiosity and an open mind. 💪 Reviewing the employment contract thoroughly.💪 Not ignoring terms that raise red flags.💪 Knowing that signing a contract is always a choice; not signing is sometimes the better choice.I loved this conversation with Dr. Lara Hochman, a Family Physician, who is also the Founder and CEO of Happy Day Health, a matchmaking service to connect amazing doctors with high-quality physician-own practices.Go to this week’s Dare to Dream Physician Podcast episode to hear part 1 of this empowering conversation on workplace culture. Lara Hochman:Happy Day Healthhttp://happydayhealth.coLara Hochman MD on LinkedInhttps://www.linkedin.com/in/larahochman/
