HOUTHIS WARN CIVILIANS TO EVACUATE RIYADH AIRPORT AND ARAMCO SITES AHEAD OF THREATENED RETALIATORY STRIKES Yemen's Houthi movement has issued evacuation warnings for Riyadh's airport and two Saudi Aramco facilities, signalling imminent (即將發生的;迫在眉睫的) retaliatory strikes after a coalition attack on a Yemeni oil facility near Sanaa. The warnings come a day after a Houthi ballistic missile struck Aramco's headquarters complex in Dhahran, and as US President Donald Trump confirmed he had spoken with Saudi Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman but declined to reveal what was discussed. The president faces mounting pressure (日益增加的壓力) to act, with the Saudis having twice previously asked Washington for direct military help against the Houthis and been turned down both times. Kate Fisher reports from Washington. Israel returns Greek artifacts Israel has returned 22 ancient Greek artifacts (文物) that were illegally removed from Greece, marking the first such repatriation (遣返;文物歸還原屬國) between the two countries. The names of the 12 candidates who have signed the pledges were announced at a press conference held by civic groups. Those civic groups include the Green Citizens' Action Alliance and the Taiwan Climate Action Network. Taipei Zoo red panda Chi-Chi adjusting well in Singapore A male red panda transferred from Taipei Zoo to the Singapore Zoo has now begun exploring his new home and is adjusting well to the move. According to the Mandai Wildlife Group, which operates (經營) the Singapore Zoo, when Chi-Chi first arrived, he seemed unsure of his new surroundings and wandered around, but he gradually settled in. The zoo operater says red panda is now lively around visitors and in good physical condition - and roams (閒逛) his enclosure in the morning and around noon before spending time with his keepers in the afternoon. Ten year old Chi-Chi was transferred to the Singapore Zoo in June as part of a partnership to help maintain the red panda captive population. OIL PRICES RISE TWO PER CENT AS SAUDI ATTACKS OVERSHADOW TRUMP'S RUSSIAN DIESEL DEAL AND DISPUTED ENERGY CEASEFIRE Oil prices have jumped two per cent on Monday, with Brent crude hitting its highest level in nearly two weeks, as attacks on Saudi Arabia and accusations of violations to US President Donald Trump's proposed energy ceasefire between Russia and Ukraine have pushed markets higher. Trump announced on Sunday that Moscow and Kyiv had agreed to halt strikes on energy infrastructure — but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says Russia launched a strike on a power plant in Kharkiv shortly after the announcement, and that drone attacks have continued over Ukrainian cities. The Kremlin has declined to confirm the terms of any deal, saying only that contacts are ongoing. Nick Harper, our reporter in Washington, says the Russian diesel deal is facing bipartisan opposition from lawmakers who say it breaches (違反) a 2022 law banning Russian energy exports. Canada PM Makes Case Ahead** of Alberta Separation Referendum** Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney is making the case for Alberta to remain in Canada, warning one week before the province’s referendum that separation would begin a “long and uncertain process” at a dangerous time for the country. The Oct. 19 vote asks Albertans whether the province should remain in Canada or begin the process of holding a referendum on separation. Carney pointed to a proposed West Coast pipeline from oil-rich Alberta, as well as new housing and a high-speed rail, arguing that Canada is building major projects again and that division would make that harder. Alberta Premier Danielle Smith called the vote, but supports remaining in Canada. A vote for separation in a future referendum would not automatically make Alberta independent, as provinces cannot secede (脫離(國家或政府)) unilaterally and negotiations with the federal government would have to follow. Philippines opens largest OFW service center in Taipei, eyes expansion The Philippines has opened its largest overseas Filipino worker service center in Taipei. It's located in the same building as the Manila Economic and Cultural Office in Taipei's Neihu District. The O-F-W Global Center-Taipei is the third such facility worldwide, following centers in Hong Kong and Kuala Lumpur. It is also the largest to date. According to the country's Overseas Workers Welfare Administration, the Taipei center is designed as a one-stop hub where Filipino migrant workers in Taiwan can access government services, welfare assistance (社會福利援助) and training without returning to the Philippines. The facility includes training spaces, a cafe, a karaoke room and areas for government services. NKorea Fires Projectile Towards Eastern Watesr South Korea’s military says North Korea fired at least one projectile toward its eastern waters, adding to a recent streak in weapons demonstrations. South Korea’s Joint Chiefs of Staff today did not immediately say whether the weapon was a ballistic missile or how far it flew. Japan described the weapon as a suspected ballistic missile. The launch followed an Oct. 3 test of what the North described as a hypersonic intermediate-range missile designed to evade (逃脫,躲開) missile defenses in South Korea and Japan. North Korea in recent weeks has also conducted live-fire drills and commissioned a new warship. TRUMP DECLARES RUSSIA-UKRAINE ENERGY CEASEFIRE ON TRUTH SOCIAL — ZELENSKYY SAYS ANNOUNCEMENT IS NEWS TO HIM US President Donald Trump has declared on Truth Social that Russia and Ukraine have agreed to an immediate energy ceasefire, but Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy says the announcement was news to him, and Moscow has not confirmed it. The announcement follows a bipartisan backlash (強烈反彈) from senators who say the administration's decision to lift sanctions on Russian diesel is illegal — but the White House has shown no sign of backing down. US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent has defended the move, saying the president has the legal authority to act. From Washington, Kate Fisher reports. Leo, who is 71 and physically active, made the announcement during his Sunday blessing. He thanked the crowd for their support and prayers. Good afternoon, I'm _ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening  The Tai-Ex opened down 23-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 49,783 on turnover of $11-billion N-T. Shares in Taiwan closed slightly lower Wednesday as large-cap tech stocks (大型股) took a pause ahead of the 50,000-point mark, while the upcoming National Day holiday also kept investors from raising their positions. Analysts say although the local market's fundamentals (基本面) remain sound, uncertainty created by U.S. monetary policy could affect its performance. Li Chen-Hsiu denied right to run for local office in Hsinchu Local election officials have disqualified (取消資格) former lawmaker Li Chen-hsiu from running for mayor of Hsinchu's Zhubei… over a requirement for Chinese citizens naturalized as Taiwanese nationals to have 10 year's household registration before seeking public office. The Hsinchu County Election Commission says that Li, a so-called "mainland spouse," would have had to submit proof of having given up her household registration in China before November 2016 in order to be qualified to run. Li says she became a citizen of Taiwan in 1999 and was approved to establish household registration here, but the Mainland Affairs Council says that she did not submit proof to immigration officials that she had given up her household registration in China until March of last year. Li says she will seek legal remedies (法律救濟途徑) to challenge the Hsinchu County Election Commission's decision and continue her bid for Zhubei mayor. Spain Maricarmen Dies After Eviction María del Carmen Abascal, an 87-year-old woman whose eviction (驅逐租客;迫遷) from her Madrid home sparked protests across Spain, has died. Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez and Housing Minister Isabel Rodríguez expressed condolences (哀悼;慰問). Known as “Maricarmen,” she became a symbol for renters struggling with Spain's housing crisis. Her eviction on September 23 led to nationwide protests.  Despite a deal allowing her to return home, her health worsened.  Her lawyer did not disclose the cause of death, but highlighted the impact of evictions on health. Maricarmen's case has galvanized a social movement, leading to a general strike and early elections called by Sánchez. DHS PROPOSES $70,000 FEE ON SCHOOLS FOR EACH INTERNATIONAL STUDENT'S WORK PROGRAMME PLACEMENT The US Department of Homeland Security has proposed a seventy-thousand-dollar fee that universities would have to pay for each international student entering the Optional Practical Training work programme — a move that could effectively end the scheme. The current fee is around five hundred dollars. DHS says the programme has become a pipeline for cheap foreign labour (外籍勞工), but higher education groups warn the proposal would devastate (重創;造成嚴重損害) university finances and damage American innovation. James Gooderson reports from Washington. Italy US Consulate Workers to Receive Payouts for Labor Abuses Foreign workers building the new U.S. consulate in Milan have signed agreements securing payouts (賠償金;支付款項) for alleged labor abuses. More than 60 laborers, mostly from India, were processed Wednesday, receiving their share of a nearly 35-million US dollar settlement with Alabama-based Caddell Construction. Prosecutors say it is the largest labor settlement for exploitation (剝削) in Europe. Workers were paid less than $2 dollars an hour, denied overtime, and subjected to threats. The settlement includes payments for unpaid overtime and housing deductions.  Nearly 480 workers can expect payouts, with some still working on-site and others elsewhere. The investigation against Caddell remains open. That was the I.C.R.T. EZ News, I'm _. -- Hosting provided by SoundOn

Good afternoon, I'm _ with today's episode of EZ News. Tai-Ex opening The Tai-Ex opened up 35-points this morning from yesterday's close, at 49,857 on turnover of $8.7-billion N-T. Shares in Taiwan closed at a fresh high Tuesday, but gains were capped as the benchmark index remained below the 50,000-point mark, with some investors selling shares to lock in gains. But contract chipmaker TSMC stayed resilient and still posted gains after retreating from an intraday high, helping the broader market break its previous closing record. New THSRC trains may pave way for family cars, senior citizen cards The minister of transportation and communication says, new Taiwan High Speed Rail trains could pave the way for a pilot program involving family cars and the expanded use of senior citizen cards. Chen Shi Kai made the statement after KMT lawmaker You Hao asked if the THSR planned to designate family cars, since some parents complained about being asked to quiet noisy children. Chen says, the MOTC has discussed the issue with THSR, but noted that space on existing trains is limited. However, Chen says the idea is "well worth" trying out, adding that, when new trains enter service, the ministry will seek to launch a trial (試用) as soon as possible. The first three of the new N700ST trains are expected to begin service in July of next year, improving capacity across the THSR system. 12 are scheduled to be deployed by the end of 2028 to further increase capacity. TRUMP WARNS** US WILL FINISH IRAN WAR 'THE NICE WAY OR THE NOT-SO-NICE WAY'** AS CALIFORNIA ROW DEEPENS US President Donald Trump has warned that America will "finish up" its war with Iran, saying on Tuesday it is only a question of whether it happens "the nice way or the not-so-nice way." The comments at a defence industry event in Maryland came as the president was already facing a backlash over remarks at a campaign rally on Monday night, when he suggested Iran could attack Los Angeles and San Diego — prompting California Governor Gavin Newsom to call him deranged (瘋狂的,神經失常的) and dangerous. The White House says the president was making the point that American cities would have been under threat had his administration not acted against Iran's nuclear programme. Kate Fisher has more from Washington. WHO Pneumonic Plague Risk Low The World Health Organization says that a possible case of pneumonic plague in Russia poses a "very low" risk outside the country. A lab employee died from pneumonia there last week, prompting an investigation by Russian officials. Pneumonic plague is a severe form that affects the lungs and spreads through respiratory particles but is treatable (可治療的) if caught early. Russian authorities have conducted preventive measures and say the situation is stable. WHO has not been asked to send experts to Russia but is monitoring the case. U.S. officials urge transparency, while experts note the pathogen's limited ability to spread due to modern medicine. Nobel Physics Prize for Belgian Scientist and Neutrinos A Belgian-born scientist has won the Nobel Prize in physics for his efforts to demystify a rare group of neutrinos, tiny cosmic particles that researchers believe offer clues to how the universe evolved. rancis Halzen is a physicist at the University of Wisconsin-Madison in the U.S. Neutrinos are cosmic particles with no electric charge and extraordinarily (极其) small mass, making them difficult to detect. Yet they are virtually everywhere. T he Nobel committee said Halzen's work was key to the construction of the IceCube Neutrino Observatory in Antarctica. Halzen said the research was a collaborative effort. That was the I.C.R.T.
