The Mutant Ages

"Mission: Save the Guardstar" is technically the series finale of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends, but it doesn't feel like it because every single episode of this show is standalone. In this episode, Bobby has a half-sister he's never told anyody else about before now, and she's been brainwashed into participating in Reagan's Star Wars defense program. Only kind of kidding about that last part. Is this episode pro-Reagan, or anti-Reagan? We're not sure, but boy is it wacky! We couldn't get our schedules aligned properly these past two weeks, so Maddy's unlocking one of our most heavily referenced Patreon episodes: the Catwoman episode. This is also on the main feed in part because Maddy lowkey thought she already put it in the main feed years ago. Now it's finally here. She's the Dracula. And by "she," we mean Firestar, who rather than being some sort of damsel in the "Bride of Dracula" episode, literally kills a man in "The X-Men Adventure." This episode of Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends not only gives us closure on the Firestar foreshadowing that has (unintentionally) unfolded for the entirety of the show up to this moment, it also features a cast of X-Men who are all delightfully in character as themselves. Xavier is peak toxic in his advice for Firestar about her ex-boyfriend; Storm has to clean up after everyone; Bobby's got his eye on Colossus; Kitty is either bored or high (or both). We love to see it. Next episode: "Mission: Save the Guardstar," Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends FINALE!!! How many times has a character from Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends looked into a telescope, only to see the next plot point sailing in from outer space? "Spidey Meets the Girl From Tomorrow" is yet another one of these stories, but this time, Spider-Man falls in love with the intergalactic visitor rather than fighting them. Two future humans, or possibly aliens, land on Earth and Peter falls in love with the female one, who falls in love right back. Or should we say "lust," because these two only know each other for a matter of minutes before they're all over each other. Angelica and Bobby are weirdly supportive of Peter's sudden lovesickness, but all is not meant to be, because these aliens can't survive on Earth for long. How did Spider-Man, Firestar, and Iceman become best friends and also a superhero team? And how did they afford that massive super-computer in their secret lair, when they're also broke college students who can barely afford to pay their rent to Aunt May? "The Origin of the Spider-Friends" tries to answer these questions, although after watching this episode, we really don't know why Peter Parker is friends with these two. Bobby and Angelica relentlessly bully Peter at school, although it's not entirely clear if they even know they're doing that. Also, Tony Stark is in this episode, because he turns out to be the reason the Spider-Friends have that super-computer. This episode's plot doesn't make very much sense, but we all found it to be a delight to watch... that's classic Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends! We repeatedly refer to the GENO pilot in this episode (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=AcOGmOX79nw), which was a pilot for a TV show that Ryan and Maddy made in 2016. We never made any other episodes of the show, though. Also, Todd refers at one point to this amazing clip from the Wonder Woman TV show: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=OCJsCM_4BNI Next episode: "Spidey Meets the Girl From Tomorrow," Spider-Man and His Amazing Friends E-mail us questions and feedback at [email protected], or follow us on social media at TheMutantAges.
