Candice examines how this star surgeon continued to rise even as his victims were falling; and what compelled him to continue with his deceits, even when he knew that there was no way to sustain them.Listen to new episodes 1 week early and to all episodes ad free with Wondery+. A big Halloween party at an apartment complex in Redmond, Washington. Themed rooms and costumed partygoers. But by the end of the party, one of the hosts is dead. The police look to the partiers as the prime suspects: was it the guy in the devil mask, the bank robber, the construction worker? As investigators comb through forensic evidence, witness testimony, DNA, and even consult with a psychic, they zero in on one suspect in particular. But for what reason? Host and reporter Matthew Shaer (Over My Dead Body) returns to the scene of the crime, speaks with everyone about a night that still haunts them years later. It’s a series about race and policing, mislaid justice, cutting-edge science, and the kinds of weighty choices that cops and prosecutors make every day -- choices that, once made, are difficult to reverse.Listen to SUSPECT: wondery.fm/SUSPECT_KPSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

this makes me so mad listening to the way she makes the parents seem like good people. I wonder why they killed them... umm maybe because he raped and abused them and threatened them. I believe they were defending themselves. the mom knew about the abuse and rape and she did NOTHING. how can you live with yourself knowing that. The father was evil and a horrible person and I am glad he died.

I absolutely love listening to Candice's insight. This woman is incredible. Hands down my favorite podcast. You'll love it too if you're interested in an in depth look at the psychology of a killer's mind. Thank you Candice for indulging my dark interests during my workouts.

A mother who remains silent about her children's abuse instead of protecting them, is not a mother. Those parents deserved what they got.

I do not agree with the host when she said Aileen lied when saying all of her murders were in self-defense. The host already said that the type of prostitution Aileen was doing was the most dangerous kind. I think it’s a safe assumption that quite possibly some of those murders may have been is self-defense. Granted Aileen did put herself in those situations and risk level by doing prostitution.

Sorry, but a man who has sex with boys is a pedophile. Period. Many men have issues with needing to be in power, and they don’t have sex with their children to satisfy. Mr. menendez was an evil pervert. Any other conclusion is giving him a pass, which I hope is not the goal of this episode.

If people are born with NPD why are they vilified so as if they have control over it? Is there medication that can help? I've read before that therapy won't help so what is the answer?

The way the medical system allowed him to continue reminds me of police departments...kicking the can down the road. Should have held those hospitals accountable too.
