Milking It with Young's Jersey Dairy - Part 2 Young's Jersey Dairy is celebrating its 153rd birthday, and two representatives of the 4-generation family business have joined us for the premiere episode of our second season of 3-2-1 PROFITS - THE PODCAST!John Young and his father, Dan, sat down with your host, Gery Deer, in the company's brand new dairy store, three miles north of the village of Yellow Springs, Ohio, on U.S. 68.In this two-part series, Dan and John talk with Gery about how the family grew the business from a small farm to what can only be called a regional destination where families have been coming for generations.History of Young's Dairy(From the company's website)"Young’s history began in 1869 when relatives of the Young Family built the red barn.  Hap Young bought the 60-acre farm and house shortly after the end of World War II.  For the next 10 years, Hap and his three sons, Carl, Bob, and Bill, farmed the 60 acres, plus up to 500 additional rented acres.  They grew grain, raised hogs, and milked cows.In 1958, the Young Family decided to try to sell their Jersey milk directly to the public.  The first salesroom was a modest operation.  A 10’ by 10’ room was added to the end of the milk room.  The equipment was also modest – some glass jugs, a refrigerator, a cash drawer, and the honor system.  The customer would drive up, open the refrigerator, get his gallon of milk, leave an empty jug and the money, and drive away."Eventually, the first dairy store was built to sell milk and their famous ice cream. This fall, the family opened a massive dairy store and their plans don't stop there! Listen as Dan and John tell this history from their own family memories and experience. They give you a look at how the multi-generation management of the business works together, how they come up with new ideas and their ideas of success. In addition, you'll learn how such a company stays relevant and profitable - focusing on keeping everyone successful from the ice cream scooper and barn cleaner to their vendors and community partners.3-2-1 PROFIT$-THE PODCAST is a Media Production of and trademarked by GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd.Copyright 2021, GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd., All Rights Reserved.Produced and Engineered by Julie BarthExecutive Producer and Host Gery DeerGraphics by Taylor HugginsAre you interested in starting a podcast for yourself or your business? THE SAWDUST FAMILY - PART 2 OF 2If you missed part 1 of this episode click here to listen to the previous episode of 3-2-1 PROFITS - THE PODCAST. -  Gary Deer and Sons - PART 1- Sawdust Family Many people in the United States underestimate the value and significance of the family business. According to the Family Owned Business Institute at Grand Valley State University in Grand Rapids, Michigan, “There are 5.5 million family businesses in the United States.  Family-owned businesses contribute 57% of the GDP and employ 63% of the workforce (Family Enterprise USA, 2011).   That means family-owned businesses employ over 98 million people!  In addition, family businesses are responsible for 78% of all new job creation (Astrachan and Schanker, (2003) Family Business Review 16(3) 211-219).”For the 2-part season 1 finale and season 2 premiere episodes (January 2022) of 3-2-1 PROFITS - THE PODCAST, we will hear from two very different family business owners. First, a small livestock bedding company and then one of the company’s long-time customers. Both are family businesses that started out very differently from each other and have very different legacies. We’ll hear from each other about what it means to be part of a business that is more than the products and services being offered but was actually built on opportunities and challenges. Our story begins with the family of your host, Gery Deer. In 1952, Gary Deer, Sr., and his wife Lois had settled into city life in Dayton after leaving the foothills of the Appalachians in southern Ohio just a year before. In August of that year, their son was born, Gary, Jr., and Sr. had a good job with the telephone company. But, not long after, a labor strike with no pay taught him how insecure any employment could be. He soon went to work at National Cash Register (NCR), one of the largest companies in Ohio, but he was determined never to be without a job again, regardless of what happened with his employer. So, along with his work on the factory floor, he worked a number of what we would now call, “side hustles.”What began as a part-time job helping his landlord pour and finish concrete sidewalks, driveways, and garage floors, transformed into a business that would change the lives of the entire Deer family. Gary Deer, Sr., passed away on July 1, 2020, after a long fight with Parkinson’s disease. But the unusual business he built left a legacy that still benefits his family. If you own a business anywhere in the U.S., you’ve probably either joined or been approached to join the local chamber of commerce. Chamber membership can provide a great resource to any size or type of business - if the organization is well managed. What is a “chamber of commerce?” A chamber of commerce is a not-for-profit, regional organization of business owners, entrepreneurs, and private citizens who come together in an effort to promote the interests of their local business community. Chambers are typically run by a paid staff, led by the CEO or Executive Director with input from a board of directors. Chambers of commerce leverage their group resources to help member businesses of any size obtain affordable healthcare, discounts on member products and services, and save money on promotions and marketing. That said, every chamber is different and the overall personality, value, and effectiveness of each membership depends largely on three things: 1) the size of the region being served, 2) the size of the organization and 3) the leadership of the chamber. In this episode of 3-2-1 PROFITS - THE PODCAST, host Gery Deer has a conversation with Wendy Rodgers, President and CEO of the Beavercreek Chamber of Commerce in Greene County, Ohio. Gery talks to Wendy about her experience as the newly-minted head of her chamber and how the members have responded to the work she and Operations Manager, Chris McClure, have done to add value and grow relationships within the membership.  But that’s not all! This episode of 3-2-1 PROFITS - THE PODCAST was recorded in front of a live audience of chamber member professionals and local business owners! During the episode you’ll hear our audience’s responses to the conversation and a few of them have some questions for our guest as well! More About our Guest Before being hired to this position, Wendy Rodgers served three years on the chamber board of directors where she held positions as 2020 Board Chair and 2021 Vice Chair.  Wendy has been a licensed realtor since 2018 and is currently with Irongate Realtors in Beavercreek. Prior to that she spent almost 20 years as a certified paralegal. Wendy’s drive for community service certainly does not end at the chamber’s office door, however. In addition to her duties there, she is also president of the Beavercreek Kiwanis Club, served on the Beavercreek Zoning and Appeals Board and is involved in many other community outreach and volunteer programs.3-2-1 PROFIT$-THE PODCAST is a Media Production of and trademarked by GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd. If your business is growing, it’s changing. If it’s changing, it’s probably becoming more complex, requiring more resources - in every respect. Many business owners experience growing pains, each unique to each of them. Expanding capabilities, onboarding of new employees and customers, even a physical move to a bigger and better location are all positive sides of growth but also bring added stresses. When Chris Chitwood decided his auto detailing business in Dayton, Ohio had outgrown his home garage, he and his wife knew it was time to change - to take a chance on something bigger and better. In this episode of 3-2-1 PROFITS - THE PODCAST, your host Gery Deer talks with Chris about how he took his first steps toward growing his business, Dayton Detailing, and where it’s leading him today. Chris is certified with the International Detailing Association as a Certified Detailer and Skills Validated detailer. He is also certified for the installation of OptiCoat professional-grade ceramic coatings and paint protection film.Dayton Detailing is located at 3876 Indian Ripple Rd  Suite B  Dayton, OH 45440. In this episode of 3-2-1 PROFIT$ – THE PODCAST, your host Gery Deer talks with lifelong sales professional Matt Borgert.Matt Borgert is a consummate sales professional, with a skill set that starts with great listening and genuine care and understanding for those he’s working with. He was born and raised in Dayton, Ohio, one of six kids and youngest of 3 boys, and so competitive by nature. His father was self-employed in the insurance business (sales skills being somewhat second nature in that regard) and he graduated with a BA in Business Management with Marketing Minor from Eastern Michigan University. By the age of 30, Matt was working in the hotel/resort and convention hospitality industry where he’d been put in charge of sales and marketing operations for a $44-million hotel company in Cleveland. Clearly, he had the sales chops for it. Over his 10 years in that role, the company was able to increase revenues to $55 million while reducing annual sales and marketing expenses from $5 million to $2.8 million. In 2000, the hotel company was sold, and Matt returned to Dayton, partly due to the change in the business and to help care for aging parents. Since then, he’s been involved in a variety of sales and marketing work from franchise recruitment to the legal field. He took the time to come by our studio and share his experience, insights, and advice about the past, present, and future of sales - a skill that, the more it changes, the more it stays the same. This episode of 3-2-1 PROFIT$ – THE PODCAST was recorded to audio and video at the GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd. studio in Greene County, Ohio.3-2-1 PROFIT$-THE PODCAST is a Media Production of and trademarked by GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd. Season 1, Episode 7: Franchising and The Chaos WranglerFor some, the move to entrepreneurship begins with a single question: What kind of business do I want to be in? It can take some time and careful consideration to determine how your education and experience line up with a potential business option. But what if you could buy into an existing, successful business, complete with defined products and services and an established marketing platform? You can. It's called a franchise. In this episode of 3-2-1 PROFIT$ - THE PODCAST, your host Gery Deer talks with Justin and Crystal Lavadour, owners of the Middletown, Ohio, franchise of Caring Transitions. Caring Transitions is a national franchise of professionals who help wrangle the chaos of downsizing and moving. They specialize in decluttering, organizing, packing, moving, resettling, in-home estate sales and online auctions, estate clearing and preparing homes for market.Justin is a retired Lieutenant Colonel with more than 20 years of service in the United States Air Force. During his time with the military, he provided relocation services for United States and Allied military forces around the world. His specialty was organizing stressful and chaotic environments and finding solutions to complex challenges. Besides managing the movements of equipment and people throughout the world, Justin’s background is further suited to his business choice. “I’ve also moved 35 times in my life, which is a lot, even for someone in the military,” he states on their website. “When I started thinking about what I wanted to do next, I realized that Caring Transitions would be a great way to use my experience to serve something bigger than myself and make a difference.”Being successful means that you need to have a good grasp on the needs of your customers. Crystal and Justin understand the impact relocations and estate clearings can have on families. It can be traumatic, particularly when the care of an elderly family member is involved, whether you’re right-sizing, moving into assisted living or clearing out a loved one’s home. It’s hard and it’s emotional, even when you have a plan in place. But these two are perfectly suited to the task. This episode of 3-2-1 PROFIT$ - THE PODCAST was recorded to audio and video at the studios of DATV in Dayton, Ohio. 3-2-1 PROFIT$-THE PODCAST is a Media Production of and trademarked by GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd. (LISTEN HERE www.321profitspodcast.com)In his discussion with Gery, Peter explained that his writing business took off because of his experience as a door-to-door salesman.  “When I launched my commercial-freelancing practice in 1994, I had no paid professional writing experience, no writing training, and no contacts,” Peter explained. “Yet, I focused on what I DID know – how to pick up the phone and make cold calls. 1000+ calls and about 4 months later, I had more work than I could handle.”As a highly-successful self-published author, Peter shares his experience, much of which was based in determination and learning the publishing business. “I had never written a book, nor had any idea how to get it published,” he said. “But over several years, I finished the book, and then, after doing a lot of research, realized that going the traditional publishing route (i.e., where you’d give up creative control, control of the timetable, the rights, and most of the profits) wasn’t for me. I decided instead to self-publish, and I’ve done FAR better than I could ever have done with a publisher.”Peter just released a new edition of The Well-Fed Writer and “companion” ebooks ...All bundles are showcased here: https://wellfedwriter.com/the-well-fed-writer-updated-edition/Well-Fed Craft, Peter’s popular self-paced course on how to actually write the mostcommonly encountered commercial-writing projects: www.wellfedcraft.com.His one-on-one coaching/mentoring services for both commercial writers and self-publishers: https://wellfedwriter.com/commercial-writing-mentoring/3-2-1 PROFIT$-THE PODCAST is a Media Production of and trademarked by GLD Enterprises Communications, Ltd.
