Description

An apartment complex hosts a big Halloween party with themed rooms and costumed partygoers. By the end of the night one of the party’s hosts is murdered. And the partygoers are the main suspects in the eyes of the police: was it the guy in the devil mask, the guy dressed as Jesus, the bank robber, the construction worker? As a complex investigation winds its way through forensic evidence, witness testimony, DNA, and even a psychic, the police zero in on one suspect in particular -- but why? From Campside Media and Wondery, the makers of Chameleon and the Shrink Next Door, comes SUSPECT. Matthew Shaer and Eric Benson (Over My Dead Body) return to the scene of the crime to uncover what happened, and speak with everyone about a party that still haunts them a decade later. It’s a series about cutting-edge science and mislaid justice, race and policing, and the kinds of weighty choices that cops and prosecutors make every day. Choices that, once made, are difficult to reverse.

It was supposed to be a reality show with a twist. In a sun-drenched villa in Ibiza, six hot guys compete for a cash prize and for the love of the beautiful and mysterious Miriam. It’s meant to be her big break: the moment she becomes the superstar she was born to be. But this is the era of “cruel reality TV” and the show producers have a different goal: they want to surprise the men with the fact that Miriam is trans. A new six-episode investigative series from Wondery, the makers of The Shrink Next Door and The Apology Line, and from Novel, HARSH REALITY is the story about love, lies, reality TV and a woman before her time: Miriam Rivera. Written by Agnes Borinsky and hosted by Trace Lysette.Listen to Harsh Reality: The Story of Miriam Rivera at wondery.fm/HR_SuspectSee Privacy Policy at https://art19.com/privacy and California Privacy Notice at https://art19.com/privacy#do-not-sell-my-info.

OK so this podcast is more about trying to free a rapist who is the most plausible suspect due to him citing colour and race as the police's reason for locking him up? ... Not the evidence that is pointing straight to Emmanual? Ridiculous. This reporter isn't investigating facts, he's trying to be seen as being woke

Revolting that this host is giving emmaunuel the rapist amongst other things any air time. Then has the nerve to go beyond that and still put his past police history down to his being black. He was dealing drugs, carrying firearms... Black or white, that is illegal and shouldn't be brushed aside.

It was interesting until it took that turn with Emanuel. I totally agree that police unfairly Target minorities, but being a minority targeted by police doesn't prove your innocence. This happens too much in crime podcasts. I just want to listen to a story about a crime being solved. I don't need to be preached to man

"He looked like a thug. He had tattoos on his hands. he dressed nice though." How did this man get chosen for jury selection. This exact statement is WHY we have jury selection. Judgemental waste of space. We make the decision based on evidence not on what a person looks like. this episode irritated me so bad.

This is just unacceptable that a killer can go free and a free man can sit in prison just because of the color of his skin! It's very sad!

I said it in the beginning and I'll say it again. When he talked to the detective and Cameron said he called Arpena the morning before her body was discovered why didn't the detective ask him if he did that regularly and if he said yes then they could have looked at his phone records to actually see how often he supposedly did that.

Allison DuBois is the hack psychic that was invited to a dinner party on Real Housewives of Beverly Hills and was a complete monster and clearly had no psychic abilities... and she is absolutely crazy. I cannot believe any police investigation would consult her! Yikes!

I am appalled that the author wants to defend a pedophile because of the color of his skin. Then wants to disparage the police for picking him up on a warrant for not registering his address...?? Dealing drugs, carrying guns, etc is all okay as well because you know... he's not white.

Ugh. I'd skip this podcast. It is well written and a fascinating who done it. But, the scheming and manipulative way the story unfolds shows a horrible lack of journalistic integrity. I was leaning toward Emmanuel Fair's innocence (a black man.) But many hours in, the 6th episode, we find out his DNA was found on her neck, her bathrobe, a tissue by her bed, and duct tape that covered her mouth. At that point, Claims of incarcerating a Emmanuel Fair just because he was black was a flat out lie. Claims of racial injustice and misconduct by an *entire* police department struck me as corrupt journalism and slanderous. Oh yeah, and Emmanuel Fair was the only guy at the party who strangled and raped a 14 year old girl at gunpoint. She survived. Fair also had a history with drugs and gangs. Four felony convictions. Maybe, just maybe he was interrogated because of his criminal background and not solely for the color of his skin? I wish we could hold our journalists accountable. I'm exhausted from journalists fabricating stories of racism that tear apart relationships between blacks and whites. Its taints the stories and of blacks whites and other races who are *truly* wrongfully convicted. Note: Emmanuel was found innocent after 8 years (a second trial) but it was based on a technicality proposed by a savvy defense attorney. The jury questioned the DNA evidence. I don't. buy. it. I trust DNA science. I'm skeptical of journalists after what happened in my California town. A newspaper published claims by a BLM leader that police were racists and hunting down POC after a police shooting of a Hispanic male. Laughable. Multiple photos and videos from the public showed the suspect waving a gun in the air towards police. So, yeah sometimes journalist's lie and spew hate.

@Zenith I don’t think he’s saying it to attack her. I think he’s describing the courtroom. He only had his aunt and uncle. One black juror. ONE. And she no one for her. It wasn’t to insult her, it was to point out that the courtroom doesn’t represent what people are.

Ever since the 5th episode, I have been trying really hard to hold off commenting. But, really?? You have to bring up the fact that the victims families not attending court or receiving messages from their personal friends? Really?? Can they afford to travel for an entire family? Has the state offer to pay for their traveling? What is the purpose of this? And if that's relevant to the case or to FAIR's presumed innocence??? That is very low. Just so low. So very low.

I do believe Emmanuel should be looked at very closely because often sex crimes are repeated ( aside from race, It doesn’t matter what color an individual is, often sex crimes are repeated). At the same time, they need to look just as closely at Cameron and Neil !
