TW : Racism, eugenics
Maybe you've seen a headline or two about the cult behind sleepytime tea and it's mother company, well we wanted to know more so we dug up the beliefs of this mostly decentralised religion(?) cult(?). I don't know what to call such a decentralised but clearly cultish in beliefs fringe group so we went with cult. It was quirky to start with lots of aliens and faux togetherness that quickly disseminated into straight-up raging racism.
It was uncomfortable to talk about for sure, but these people are flying under the radar a bit much for our liking so, I guess, let's talk about it.
TW: talk of suicide *explicit*, talk of sexual and physical abuse of children
The Branch Davidians were a sect of Seven Day Adventists who settled at Mt. Carmel near Waco, Tx. They flew under the radar for years until the ATF launched an attack on the compound, they would stare each other down for over 50 days until tragedy struck. Few members survived and the attack left it's mark on history.
What if very few people cared about your murder? What if a whole town turned a blind eye to the truth? That happened nearly 40 years ago, in the 1980's, when Danny Paquette was shot in his backyard while working and, despite the murderers' identity being an apparently open secret, no one turned them in until 20 years later. A step daughter confessed and a man went to prison.
Pea soup or the smog event of the century? The smog cloud that shut down London in 1952.
The ghost in literary machine, a thief who left some trace but no name. This man conned his way into acquiring an unknown wealth of unpublished manuscripts only to... keep them for himself? While he awaits trial we talk deets on the man that had the whole publishing industry shaking in their boots.
The life of Joseph Kallinger was anything but a fairytale. He started his life unwanted and ended it much the same, and we're talking about the crimes he committed along with the ones committed against him.
What actually happened to Princess Diana? A death so public and fraught we had to discuss the conspiracies around it.
We discuss John Gilkey and his obsessive desire for rare, expensive, collectable books. His crimes lasted years and his mistakes were few but one book enthusiast would not let him get away.
One night on a boat trip to Catalina, star Natalie Wood, winds up dead in the ocean. How did she get there and what exactly happened on the night she died? Was there more to her relationship with Christopher Walken? Why did no one see or hear her screams? We look through the entirety of her public life and her family's statements to try for a peek at the truth. We will likely never know exactly what happened, but let's talk about it.
In this one, Kris tries to tell us about the Phillip experiment but mostly just gets really annoyed at Ash's skepticism and critique of their (extremely poor and utterly disappointing) scientific methodologies (if you can even call their nonsense that at all.) Can you create your own ghost with the power of the human mind? Listen and decide!
CW: you may hear the very faint sounds of chewing at some points... I should not snack and record. My apologies. - Ash
In this episode, we talk about some sad, some odd but always murderous cannibal cases. Ed Gein, Tarare of France and a few similar cases, and the Rotenburg Cannibal.
TW: cannibalism (obvi), murder of babies/minors, graphic descriptions of Ed Gein's house, gross eating habits, necrophagia
Ash brings us through some bizarre and mostly noncriminal (?) cannibal cases from around the world. Join us and laugh and probably cringe along!
Kris tells the story of the witch of yazoo city was ostracized from the town. She may have been a serial killer and at the time of her death she cursed the town, changing the trajectory of Yazoo city forever. This one is true crime and plenty of spook and folklore. Special thanks to Faye Hall fir telling me this story for the first time and Patrick Hall for research assistance.
Halloween fun....well mostly! Ash looked into the origins of vampires, werewolves, zombies, and the creature from the black lagoon!
We covered 2 of the most haunted houses in America, S.K. Pierce House in Massachusettes and The Myrtle Plantation. We talked about the Rosenheim Mansion where a lot of spooky things are filmed, including American Horror Story and Buffy. I may look into some other Haunted Places. Enjoy Spooky Season!
In honor of spooky season, Ash did some research on origins of your favorite spooky movies! It's our favorite time of year and we plan to have a little fun this fall looking into hauntings, origins or spooky movies and urban legends.
This one was so much fun to record! We discuss the Manchester house, Robert the Doll, an Australian foot tickler, and the murder that inspired jeepers creepers.
Thanks for listening and please share it with someone who likes this sort of thing!
Tiffany was a free spirited, adventurous college student who disappeared from Pensacola Beach. Tiffany has never been found. Her family is still looking for her and the investigation is ongoing. IF you have any information regarding the disappearance of Tiffany please contact the Pensacola Police Department.
TW: Accidental death of a child, talk of suicide and sexual assault.
This is the conclusion of Rebecca Zahou. We are going to go dive into the details of the investigation, reinvestigation and trial. Such an interesting case because of the blatant disregard of evidence and public interest. I hope you like it as much as I did!
-Kris
TW: Talk of suicide, sexual assault, and discussion of a terrible accident with a child resulting in death. This is a heavy one.
Rebecca Zahou's death is considered a suicide.....despite all the confusing evidence to the contrary. Rebecca was a young woman dedicated to her family and in a relationship she thought was love. After an awful accident, she "committed suicide" under very strange circumstances. Ash is gonna dive into the details of the case. This has been one of my favorite cases we have covered so far!
-Kris
It was supposed to be a pun. It doesn't work in print. The brave captures, wild escapes and bizarre trials of Ted Bundy. finally the mini series can come to an end.
