Description

Every day, creators give us professional-level content from the back of a metaphorical (or literal) closet. No creative form is quite so liberating as the podcast. But it's also a labor of love. What goes on behind the scenes? On "Cut Loose," we take you inside their closets and inside the minds of indie podcasters to ask: how do they do it?

Today we speak with Alissa Alter from "Myth of Motherhood." But if you think this episode is just about motherhood, you're in for a surprise. Find Alissa at: www.alissa-alter.com
Welcome to Episode 10 of Cut Loose. If you’re listening to this in America, I hope that you’re ready to enjoy a beautiful Thanksgiving. I don’t know if I’ll be home for Thanksgiving yet! I’ve been visiting family in Germany and am now stuck in quarantine, with this next wave of COVID that’s sweeping across the continent. But it’s been a good opportunity to slow down and reflect. If you ask me what I’m thankful for this year, one thing I think I’d say are *moments.* Moments are something you’re going to start hearing a lot about from us at Uncut.fm. Moments of audio but also, on a more personal level, moments here with my family.I’m also thankful for podcasters like today’s guest, Joshua Hoe, the host of “Decarceration Nation.”If you’re interested in the topic of prison reform, you may have heard of Josh. “Decarceration Nation” hasn’t quite reached Ear Hustle fame — and if you haven’t heard Ear Hustle, you should definitely check it out, we reference it more than once in this conversation — but his show has become a reference point for people across the political spectrum who, like him, are interested in radically reimagining criminal justice in America. He’s interviewed people such as author Clint Smith, CNN’s Van Jones, and law professors John Pfaff and Rachel Barkow.

I wanted to talk to Josh to better understand what it means to use your show as a tool for advocacy. How do you attract attention to your cause in such a crowded social media world? What does it means to show up for your cause, and your work, every single week?

On this episode, I speak with Vidhya Iyer, the host of "Mindful Businesses." If you’ve listened to prior episodes, you’re probably used to some of the standard questions I tend to ask our guests — what is their creative process, what have they learned about themselves through podcasting. And I would say the first part of my conversation with Vidhya — to the extent you know me — is somewhat predictable. Vidhya shares some of her podcasting secrets, from why she believes in word of mouth as essential to podcast promotion to the voice exercises she’s adopted before she records, inspired by the practices of radio journalists at NPR. But our conversation toward the end really surprised me in the best way. Vidhya shares a more complicated side of podcasting: namely, how do you handle a situation where a guest isn’t being authentic, or tries to promote something that doesn’t align with your values, or brand.
Check out Mindful Businesses wherever you get your podcasts and don't forget to rate, review, and subscribe.Link to vocal exercises shared by Vidhya:https://training.npr.org/2017/06/19/aerobics-for-your-voice-3-tips-for-sounding-better-on-air/https://www.engvid.com/acting-secrets-for-a-strong-dynamic-voice/
Tyrone is the host of “Got ‘Em Coach”, a podcast that focuses on — in his words —a variety of quality court-related content as well as good sneaker info. It revolves around lifestyle, fashion, basketball banters and everything good about the court life. With that in mind, I’ll warn you up top that I know nothing about basketball. 🏀 If you’re anything like me, just know that it doesn’t matter. Tyrone and I had such a great conversation about how he was raised, how he found his way into podcasting and how he's developed the discipline to stick with his show for four years and counting. You can listen to Got ‘Em Coach wherever you get your podcasts.
There’s no Tom, Dick, or Harry to be found on the Toddcast Podcast. Only the life experiences and wisdom of men named Todd. Join us for both a silly and serious discussion with the hosts of "The Toddcast Podcast": Michael and Brad.
In this episode, we take you all the way to New Zealand to speak with indie podcaster and standup comic Tim Batt. We LOVED this conversation and hope you'll check out his work if you haven't already. Find "The Worst Idea of All Time" anywhere you get your podcasts or check out his website: www.timbatt.co.nz
How much do you know about South Carolina? If you’re anything like me, it might not actually be much. Did you know for instance Chadwick Boseman came from South Carolina, as did the late astronaut Ronald McNair? The podcaster I’m talking to this week, Marquis Wideman, loves his home state. Along with a handful of his closest childhood friends, his podcast, “Weight of the Eight,” is all about celebrating local culture and representing the place that you’re from. He’d love for everyone to listen to their show, but it's a podcast for South Carolinians above all. In my conversation with Marquis, we obviously talk about… South Carolina. But we also talk about how podcasting transforms friendships and conversation. It got me thinking about , just, what happens when you put five men in a room with a microphone. Does the conversation go deeper than it would otherwise? What do they share? In what ways might it strengthen their bond?

I really loved this conversation and I hope you do too. Be sure to check out Marquis’s podcast, Weight of the Eight, wherever you get your podcasts. And as always if you have feedback, I’d love to hear from you. Shoot me an email at hello@uncut.fm.
Today, I’m taking you out to California for a conversation with the ladies of “Spark My Interest.” They’re three incredibly talented women, two of whom are twins. And I think the moment you hear their voices you’ll recognize they know what they’re doing. They have the rapport and entertainment expertise that can only come from three best friends living in California. They’re writers, they’re entertainers, and they keep things refreshingly lighthearted. Their podcast — true to its name — sparks interest and makes you laugh. I think we could agree we all need a little more laughter in today’s world.I hope you enjoy this conversation as much as I do. As always, if you have feedback or are interested in learning more about Uncut, get in touch! You can find us on instagram at cut_loose_podcast, or shoot us an email at hello@uncut.fm.Listen to "Spark My Interest" wherever you get your podcasts! On today's episode, I speak with Shea and Michelle from "The Pantry Podcast." Michelle and Shea are co-hosts, but they're also married! I do hope that regardless of your religious beliefs or affiliation, you'll take something away from this episode. For me, our conversation reminded me of some basic creative truths -- namely, that what's right for one creatively, can't always be confined to data or statistics or SEO.It also gave me insight into what it's like to maintain both a podcast and a marriage. And it gave me a glimpse into the Christian podcasting world. I am so grateful to Shea and Michelle for taking the time to speak with me. And I hope you enjoy the conversation too.
Judd Dowhy is a creator in the truest sense of the word. His comedy podcast, "Just Gonna Read This," is a true accomplishment of humor, voiceover, and sound design. But lately, he's been finding success with "The Obituary Files" — his podcast that brings the long dead back to life, if only for just a moment. We talk to Judd about his creative process, what inspired him to start podcasting in the first place, and what it means when your host persona is a character. You can find Judd's work at: www.justgonnreadthis.ca and www.theobituaryfiles.com.
Welcome to the inaugural episode of "Cut Loose!" This week, we speak with Amelia Rose, host of the personal journal podcast "C'est La Me."
