Photographer Mark Turner and author Sami Gray created an incredible comprehensive guide to weeds of the PNW. In this episode, Erin talks with Mark about photographing plants and he shares stories of putting together a book that is a beautiful representation of some of the plants we fight in our gardens.
Ceramic pots are the perfect addition to every garden. They add color to shady areas, give height to short spaces - they make you wanna look at your nook. Our selection is bigger than ever and their hardiness makes them a welcome year round feature.
We are real loving this week friends. Roses aren't the only plants that represent love friends and we want you to know about the others. Discover alternative options for your sweetie and then pop in here and buy them! Be fresh. Be creative. Be as full of love as we are!
We call in the expert to discuss how to prune juvenile and old fruit trees. With a little patience, sharp tools and the confidence gleaned from our resident arborist, you'll have your personal orchard looking good soon-ish.
Sweet, juicy and delicious homegrown citrus CAN be achieved in the Pacific Northwest and we will give you the confidence to give it a go in your own personal garden (even though one of us continues to fail at it herself over and over and over). You can do it and Erin will keep trying right alongside you. Limes for margaritas, lemons for lemonade, grapefruits for breakfast, oranges for the elixir of youth, kumquats cause it's a funny word ... citrus can take your garden to a whole new level of awesome.
Proper and easy winter houseplant care can help your green babies thrive throughout the season but pests can foil even the most dutiful of caregivers. We chat about how to identify a few of the more common buggers and let you know how to eliminate them from your indoor oasis.
The weather anamoly of snow and ice rapidly melting followed by inches of rain and warmer temps make right now a strange and delightful time for mushrooms to florish. Same with mold. Outside and for some of us aggressive waterers - inside too.
The Plantcast dove into a plethora of topics in 2022. Justin and Erin did not shy away from tough topics (anyone remember how to build a rain garden?) and indulged in perennials, conifers and you know, mulch. The last episode of 2022 is what they learned and a fun little gift rap. You'll see.
Winter bloomers cyclamen, hellebores and camellias are on the cusp on blooming right now and survive even the harshest of PNW winters. This episode is chock full of planting tips and fun facts about these seasonal showstoppers.
Plantcast listeners must have plant lovers in their life and our big red barn is the gift shop to visit to find the perfect present for that person! Valley's buyer Bailey sits down with us to chat about a few of her favorites for the season that fit any budget.
Hosts Justin and Erin give thanks for a year of podcasting glory and reveal some of the great holiday decor finds at the Nursery available right now.
Valley Nursery offers both cut and potted living Christmas Trees every year. In today's episode, we discuss the varieties of both and talk about how to care for them AND pepper in fun facts with very little singing.
Frigid temperatures are on the horizon and only you can save yourself from the dangers of frost. Have a listen to learn about some practical projects you can squeeze in before the mercury drops. Save yourself from extra work in the spring by getting the work done now!
After four years and 173 episodes, cohosts Erin and Justin are taking off their headphones and walking away from their mics. It what may well be the last episode, the enthusiastic gardeners chat about what they've learned creating the podcast and remind you of the tips and plants they hope you've absorbed over the course of the Plantcast's growing seasons.
We sell a lot of baby plants here at Valley but if you take a look around, you'll see some old fogy's - including the Uncle Fogy Jack Pine (it's by the pond). We have legacy trees planted throughout the nursery that are perfect examples of what some of our inventory will grow into. This is the second episode we've dedicated to the specimens that thrive in our yard and can do the same in yours.
Let's be real, nothing you want grows out of bad soil. Success in our gardens depends on nutrient rich soil and nutrient rich soil is made now by you, easily. A little resourcefulness, a little work and a lot of worms can turn lackluster soil into garden gold. Have a listen and find out how ...
Since 2016, Valley has had the privilege of hosting Tacoma Glassblowing Studio's Pumpkin Patch for one day in the fall. This year's patch will be here on Oct. 4. Erin chats with the studio's co-owner Jeannine Sigafoos about the origins of the pumpkin and how they came to find themselves at Valley every year.
It is the absolute perfect time to plant perennials in your garden. There's a very good chance you are seeing things in other people's yards you wish you had planted earlier this year. Don't fret friend! You can find fantastic vibrant perennials right now, plant them immediately and still enjoy them for a few weeks. Planting now allows the plants time to establish, and they will return next year, right where you planted - in that spot you stared at and wished you had done something about sooner. C'mon down - find that spot filler. Bring in the plant, bring in the color. Be a garden winner!
According to Erin, there is not a time of year more beautiful. Your favorite lil' podcaster doesn't want the season to end ... nope, it's just too glorious. In that spirit, we chat with someone who makes the vibrance of the season last throughout the year by creating stunning everlasting flower bouquets and wreaths. Local flower farmer Carolyn Thompson of Willow and Mable Garden Co. chats with Erin about what it takes to create beauty beyond a single season.
We aren't saying summer is over, but we are suggesting that planning now for fall color may be the right way to spend the last of your reward points you're hanging onto. As we enter the final week of rewards redemption, finding the perennials and shrubs that will liven up your landscape or porch pots with color during the changing season is a great idea (we think). So have a listen, hear a few suggestions, come on in and get those plants that show off exceptional hues in autumn.
