The issues with it and why it actually doesn't help young writers4. I know you are in the business of helping people get huge transformations in their lives. Most of the people I work with deliver that transformation in a book, but they also have programs, courses, and other offerings as well. What if you could find a way to put it all together and give people just a little taste, a little win to get started? This is where the idea of a micro-course and mini-book comes in. In today's episode, I'm going to break down the 3 steps you need to begin crafting the blueprint to launch your legacy through a resource and a course. If you love this episode and want to get amazing support on actually implementing the steps I share in the episode and create your micro-course + mini-book, then you are invited to join the Launch Your Legacy Mastermind! Recently one of my clients had a big aha! She realized that her job was not to figure out all the different parts of her book right now when she is just starting out on her book writing journey. What a relief?! We discovered that when she just gets embodied and connected to herself, then words feel like they just "spew" out of her. So, we came up with the goal of just "embody and spew." In today's episode, I'll share exactly what my client and I discovered and how to activate this in your writing. I’m excited for you to learn more about the mission and vision of this program! When you were a kid did you ever write stories? Me too! But somewhere along the way, that kid-like approach to writing got swapped for heavy pressure and concern for being and writing "right." In today's episode, I share several simple ways you can tap into that child writer again. There is a stigma around what writing is supposed to look like. What is the image that shows up for you? Do you picture someone at a typewriter or computer? Do you picture a lovely journal and fancy pen? Often we envision black words on the white page as the only way writing can show up. In today's episode, I share the concept of verbal writing or writing out loud. Many of my clients are verbal processors, meaning they think best when talking about their thoughts, me asking questions, and them responding. In today's episode, I'll share what writing "out loud" can look like! I’m excited for you to learn more about the mission and vision of this program! There are some really cool writing support tools out in the world. One type I see often are websites and apps that auto-generate writing for you. In this week’s episode, I get curious about whether this kind of tool is a friend or foe in your writing journey. Here is a sneak peak at some of the core ideas I share: You might not actually need these toolsIt promotes a “should” mentality and often comes from “lack” Might cause you to bypass the powerful work of getting connected to core messages Your audience can tell when the words are not genuinely yoursIf you do use these, when and how to use them effectivelyUltimately, you have to decide what’s best for you, but I think you’ll learn my view by the end of the episode. As always, leave us a review so that more people see the podcast and get the writing support they need. I share a lot about how you can work with my team and I to get your amazing non-fiction personal growth and/or business strategy book out in the world. I get a LOT of ads about professing claims like…“I wrote my book in a weekend and now I want to share my simple template for you to do the same!” OR “My clients write their books in 36.2 hours on average and you can do the same.” I don’t know about you, but I’m sick of feeling like I have to speed through everything. Bigger, faster, harder is not always the best thing. For writing, it’s often what pushes people away from writing and sharing their writing with others. So, in this week’s episode, I share the well-known Navy Seal slogan, “Slow is smooth, smooth is fast,” and explain how this approach is an alternative to the write as fast as possible plans. I share how the pressure to write quickly: Doesn't always result in the best writingDoesn’t fit most heart-centered, mission-driven folksOften encourages bypassing the very healing parts of writingAs always, leave us a review so that more people see the podcast and get the writing support they need. “Is it good?”...“Just tell me what to fix.” These are often the ways we’ve learned to ask for feedback on our writing. Yet, neither of these requests are very helpful when writing your book. In this week’s episode, I break down 4 powerful types of writing feedback to ask based on the stage of writing you are in and your writing needs: No response or just “thank you” Pointing or center of gravitySummary and sayback What was almost said and what I wanted to hear more aboutListen as I break down all of these response types, which I have adapted over the years from Peter Elbow and Pat Belanoff’s awesome composition book, Being A Writer. Shout out also to my dear friend and former colleague, Dr. Jennifer Buckner, for creating the awesome PDF that gave me a condensed version of what Elbow and Belanoff created in their book. I talk from this PDF in this episode (message me if you’d like a copy!).As always, leave us a review so that more people see the podcast and get the writing support they need. When we are writing, we are often sharing things we’ve said before or written before. We are writing things we teach over and over. We write stories and experiences that we’ve shared before. Then, when we go to revise and edit our words, it can be difficult to really “see” whether our words are landing and coming across as we want. Why? Because at this point, we’ve read and reread these words so many times that our brains actually fill in any gaps, even see and read things that aren’t actually on the page. Crazy, right? So, in this week’s episode, I share a little bit about why this happens and how to take an idea from qualitative research methods and data collection to help us make these words that are so close to us seem strange and new. Why? Because it gives us the distance we need to revise like a champ! As always, leave us a review so that more people see the podcast and get the writing support they need. Do you struggle with time management? How about managing your time to write your book? Today’s special guest is Richie Norton, award-winning author and serial entrepreneur, whose latest book Anti-Time Management: Reclaim Your Time and Revolutionize Your Results With the Power of Time Tipping will give you a whole new perspective on (un)managing your time. After losing his son and brother-in-law, Richie and his amazing wife Natalie decided to stop waiting to get to a certain place in life in order to begin living their values. Start to live."He shares this concept and so many more from his book in today’s powerful episode: How to own your timeHow to make time work for youHow to do what you want when you wantAs the CEO and Cofounder of PROUDUCT—an INC. 5000 company—a global entrepreneurship solution helping businesses go from idea to market with full-service sourcing, product strategy, and end-to-end supply chain, Richie has dedicated his life to prioritizing his family and helping people become self-reliant by creating their empowering products, businesses, and more. Plus, Richie dishes the dirt on how he wrote Anti-Time Management, and how doing so created a “magical magnet” for his life and work in ways he could never expect! Many of us think our writing needs to take readers somewhere, and needs to help them think or feel a certain way. In this episode of The Written Compass, I share how this thinking can easily keep you stuck and not writing... the very opposite of your book writing goals! I provide you with some tips and tricks for shifting this mindset from "needing to know the answers" to "being open to what the words want to share." And, I talk about the relationship between your words and the readers' experience with them. After listening, share this episode and your thoughts with me over on IG @shanahartman_And, if you are ready to stop spinning your wheels, and get on the writing train, then be sure to join us for the Write NOW 30-day writing challenge!
