Description

American Democracy is not promised to us and, with all the forces working against it, saving it will take a level of work most people aren’t ready for. The Politics Girl Podcast is here to give people a reason to care and a reason to fight. Our goal is to inspire. To instill in people a true understanding of what this country COULD be, if the right people were fighting for it, and what it WILL be if they don’t. It’s a political podcast yes, but more than that, it’s a podcast about America’s potential, where one passionate, and slightly mouthy, immigrant attempts to motivate the country to become what it promised to be but, so far, has yet to become. You’ll leave more knowledgeable, more engaged, and more sure that you, personally, can make a difference to the future of American democracy. Everyone’s got a little time for that right? Subscribe for new episodes every Tuesday. We’re in a fight for our country. We sure as hell better know what we’re fighting for. xo

As Supreme Court Justice, Louis Brandeis said, “America has a choice. We can either have great wealth in the hands of a few, or we can have democracy, but we can’t have both.” There’s a shift happening in the American consciousness right now. Where the idea we all bought into, that idea that if we just work hard enough we’ll make it, is starting to feel like a bit of a scam. This concept of “pulling yourself up by your bootstraps” is beginning to look like a cruel joke and the conceit that the struggles so many Americans face just to make ends meet is somehow a result of our own actions or shortcomings, rather than acknowledging we’re actually living in an oppressive system rigged against us is really starting to chafe. Join me and the illustrious Robert Reich as we discuss the economy, the American dream, and what we, the American public, can do to make it. As computers get smarter, who do we want regulating them? Who do we want programming them and, ultimately, who do we want leading our country and military response when AI is in the mix? If we get this wrong, how we feel about things like taxes, religion and racism will be the least of our problems. To have this essential conversation, I’m joined today by Ross Andersen. Ross is a staff writer at The Atlantic, where he covers science, technology, and culture. I’m having him on to discuss his article called “Never Give Artificial Intelligence the Nuclear Codes". This is big deal stuff and something we have to consider not only as citizens of our world, but also as citizens of a powerful nuclear superpower going into an election year. This is kind of a scary episode, but it’s also an incredibly important, and one I think is really worth your time.  As always, if you enjoy what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. As we come up on Thanksgiving and the holiday season, I started to think of all the things in my life I was thankful for and I kept returning to having a roof over my head. America’s homelessness crisis has become extraordinary and housing has becomes out of reach for so many Americans. Not just in the big cities, but all over the country. Yes, it’s partially a mental health issue, but it’s also a cost of living issue and greed issue. Everything has become too expensive, we don’t make enough money, and we can’t afford to live like we used to. Sometimes that means we can’t afford to live anywhere at all. Someone who knows this feeling first hand is Konstantine Anthony, the Mayor of Burbank, candidate for LA County Supervisor and former unhoused person himself. Join us for a terrific conversation about not only turning your life around, and to go from needing help to helping others, but what we can do to be that helping hand in this increasingly difficult world.  As always, if you enjoy what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. Our culture is literally littered with the fallout of unhappy men looking to assert their dominance. From the tantrums of our last president, to our daily mass shootings, to the broad resurgence of patriarchal male dominance, men are not doing ok and they’re making it everyone else’s problem. Join me and the founder of ReMaking Manhood Mark Greene as we talk about what’s gone wrong and how strategists behind the conservative and MAGA movement are looking to weaponize every aspect of the culture wars including our culture of masculinity to their benefit, and what we, as a culture, can do about it - both for the health of our men, and the health of our society, because clearly this isn’t working. It’s election day in America and all over the country people are choosing the direction they want their country to go. While citizens exercise their right to vote, we know there are people actively looking to undermine and disrupt the process to their own ends. Which is why we can no longer afford to be reactive about our democracy. We must be strategic. There are people out here trying to destroy it, so we have to be working just as hard to save it. Nowhere will that work be more obvious in 2024 than in battleground states. Join me and Nevada Secretary of State Cisco Aguilar as we talk about the work he’s doing in Nevada, and with other Secretaries of State, to get strategic about protecting our votes and our democracy now, and for the future.  As always, if you enjoy what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. "Welcome to the world of reality denial, where truth is subordinate to ideology, feelings have more weight than evidence, and democracy hangs in the balance”. We are in a disinformation war in America where the goal of those creating the lies is not just to get us to question some particular fact - vaccines don’t work, covid isn’t real, the election was stolen - but to question your trust in people who might tell you the truth. As Lee says, “Don’t just lie - Polarize.” The right has done this incredibly well by exploiting preexisting grievances and resentments to form a community around the “us against them” narrative where the other side isn’t just biased, they’re evil. So what do we do when doubt can be overcome by evidence but trust can not. How do you get people to believe the truth then their very identity is wrapped up in NOT believing it? If you have to work for a living, then you’re working class, and the sooner we realize most of us are in the same boat, the sooner we can ban together and ask for what we need. John Russell and I talk about how we have more to gain from solidarity than division, and as John says, “It comes down to power. If we want to find common ground, and close the hate gap, it’s essential we realize our futures are irrevocably tied together”. Yes, we need to elect people who will support our needs, but we don’t have to wait around for politicians to start making change. We can start that all on our own though action.  As always, if you enjoy what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. Democracy’s white knight Marc Elias joins us to explain that we aren’t just fighting election suppression & subversion, we’re now fighting election vigilanteism and the new Republican strategy of standing in defiance of the law itself. The GOP seems to have decided it’s simply good politics to say you’re fighting a corrupt system when you, yourself, are the ones corrupting it. As Marc points out, one of the biggest ways to stop these extreme moves against our elections is to raise awareness of what’s going on. So today we talk what’s happening, what’s being done to counter it, and what we can all do to support democracy moving forward.  As always, if you enjoy what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. The 2024 senate map is rough. The Republicans only need to win 2 seats to change the balance of power and the Democrats have 8 that are considered vulnerable. It’s not only essential we win every seat we already have, but we have to buckle down and defend the ones we can’t lose. With that in mind, today’s guest is Michigan Congresswoman Elissa Slotkin, running to replace retiring Democratic senator Debbie Stabenow. Elissa and I talk about the chaos in the House of which she is currently a member, the importance of continuing to fund Ukraine in this battle between democracy and autocracy, and the importance of keeping the Senate in this time of deep political instability. We are seeing increasing calls for violence around the country, an incitement to violence by Trump and his compatriots, and an overall threat to our democracy and our public safety with the stockpiling of weapons and ammunition to use against a government, or fellow citizens, with whom people disagree. Join me, and well known public safety advocate Fred Guttenberg, as we talk about these threats and about giving Americans the tools to move off this platform of lies and onto a platform of facts and action. Presidential third parties are deceiving the public. They claim to offer a choice, but what they’re offering is an illusion. A dream that somehow their candidate could defy history and do something no 3rd party candidate has been able to do, and win the presidency. There is no grey area here. If you buy what they’re selling and give them your vote, you are fundamentally helping elect Donald Trump to destroy American democracy. I’m not being hyperbolic. There’s too much on the line in 2024 to split the “we would like to remain a democracy” vote. We simply can’t afford the mistake of No Labels, the Green Party or RFK on the Presidential ticket. You want to make a difference to our democracy? Get more people registered to vote. Today we talk to Jason Berlin, the Executive Director of Field Team 6, which since its founding in 2019 has helped register almost 2.9 million Democratic voters, the vast majority in swing states. Jason and his team are a proudly “partisan voter registration” group looking to “track down every good hearted eligible voter and get them on the voter rolls where they belong”. Relentlessly optimistic, Jason and his army of volunteers have disproved the idea that you can’t out organize cheating, and know that non-voters are actually the key to democratic victories across this country. So tuck in and listen to what you can personally do to turn the tide and shut these cheaters down in 2023, 2024, and beyond. The majority of youth in America are not on board for the new extremist Republican agenda. They believe in reproductive rights, and that the climate is in crisis. They’re against book banning and propaganda education. They’re majority pro-LGBTQ, pro-union, pro-health care, pro-living wage and pro-common sense gun legislation, and the Republican party offer them none of that. GenZ might technically still be new to politics, with the oldest member of the generation turning 26 this year, but they know who they are and what they want. Our youth is also looking around at everything from our legislation to our politicians and not seeing themselves reflected, and that hurts with turnout and engagement. Which is why our guest today is so important. Maxwell Frost is not only the first member of GenZ to be elected to Congress, he’s been elected to represent Florida. So as he looks to, and represents the future of our government and country, he hails from a state that’s currently working overtime to take us to the past. In honor of Labor Day we’re going to talk about the importance of the American worker, but more specifically about the importance of union work. American workers have clearly had enough. The majority of us know we can’t carry on like this. That the wealth inequality and the growing chasm between workers and owners is leading this country down a dark path. At their peak, 40% of American workers were part of a union, now that number is under 7%, and look what’s happened - the rich got richer while the poor got poorer and the middle class has all but disappeared. People can’t afford homes, food or health care, and the majority of us have to take a side hustle or gig work on top of our regular jobs just to make ends meet. It’s unsustainable, and the workers of America are beginning to stand in solidarity against it. To talk about the importance of union voices in the fight for our future we are joined by AFL-CIO President Liz Shuler whose federation includes 60 unions and 12.5 million working people across all sectors of the U.S. economy as she gives us a hopeful path to a better future.  As always, if you enjoy what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. If you care about democracy in America, then you care about the upcoming election in Virginia this November. And before you think yeah, I don’t live in Virginia, I’ll think I’ll skip it, I want you to think about the Wisconsin Supreme Court race in April, or the Ohio special election this August. Most of us don’t live in those states, but our attention on those elections, and their successful results, put the Republicans and their increasingly extremist agenda, on notice. So today we’re going to talk to two Virginia candidates: Senate Candidate, and current House Delegate, Danica Roem, and social media star and now House Delegate Jessica Anderson. Virginia is THE most important race in the country right now. The next big election to WIN. It’s the opportunity to give the Republican Party and their abortion restricting, book banning, voter suppressing, soft supremacy the double middle finger and say not this time, not on our watch. Despite how frustrated we might be with the ethics, decisions, and arrogance of this far right activist court, guest Dahlia Lithwick believes we’re actually at an amazing moment in American history where we have the opportunity to really address the court with our politics. If we’re not happy, then we insist on change. Supreme Court justices are not imperial. Corrupt people make corrupt rulings, and most of the county can agree we hate corruption. According to Dahlia, true institutional change is not only possible, it’s shockingly doable, but it won’t happen unless we make the court a first tier issue. Dr. Allison Gill, the founder of MSW Media, host of the Daily Beans and the Jack Podcast, is here to talk the ins & outs of the most recent, and most serious, Trump indictments - namely the one’s related to January 6th and Conspiracy to Defraud the United States. Trump has been indicted for fraud against the government, the plot to disrupt the peaceful transfer of power, and conspiracy against the rights of all US voters. The documents case in Florida is terrible, the potential RICO case in Georgia is awful, but this case, the one in DC, the one where a sitting President of the United States plotted, contrived, lied and broke the law to stay in power against the will of the voter is what it’ll comes down to. How this trial plays out will define the course of our nation. Understand what’s at stake.  As always, if you enjoy what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. It’s easy to demonize Hollywood, to think the people who work in entertainment don’t have the same problems as you or I, but when you take away the glitz & glamour, entertainment is just another industry filled with regular people doing regular work. The vast majority who work in Hollywood are not superstars. This strike is primarily working people standing up for the rights of working people and the superstars standing in solidarity. Actors and writers are the front line in two battles: The rise of AI and how humanity fits into a world with artificial intelligence, and class warfare, who gets to succeed in our society. The deals these unions get, the agreements these corporations make will ultimately affect every single industry and almost every single American. Republicans spin a good yarn, but data doesn’t lie, and since globalization began the contrast between Republican and Democratic performance on the economy has been incredibly stark. Look no further than Bidenomics vs. Reaganomics. While the Democrats continue to evolve to attempt to create an economy that works for all of us, Republicans keep doubling down on policies that only serve the rich. There’s no reason Democrats should continue to lose the conversation around the economy when study after study shows that Democratic leadership equals growth, lower deficits, and the ability to adapt to a changing market, while Republican leadership equals recessions, higher deficits, and continued American decline. With that in mind, today we talk about the success of Bidenomics with White House Communications Director, Ben LaBolt. You want to understand where we really are with politics & the economy? Then this is the pod for you! If you enjoy what we do, please consider SUBSCRIBING to PoliticsGirl Premium. We know the conservative movement wants to return us to “a better time”, what they see as the “natural order”, with the white, straight Christian man on top, but even those who see themselves as liberal or centrist can struggle with the idea of changing the status quo, because it feels like a potential losing proposition for people who have always been at the top. That people who would be outwardly opposed to MAGA still feel uncomfortable with all these calls for equality and respect, especially when it’s perceived to question their judgment, or status in society. Nostalgia is a powerful part of the human condition, and it can easily become the filter through which every political, social, and cultural piece of information is absorbed. So if a political movement offers to bring back what has supposedly been lost, or at least keep us at status quo, it’s hard to resist because it speaks directly to the anxieties people have around the social and cultural change America has been undergoing over the past century. Please don't say "Communist China". The word communist has become a word of hate. The USA is not actually a Capitalist government, it is more a social democracy. It is true that they call their party communist but we have parties called Democrat or Republican which are meaningless terms. China is a blended economy as we are.

Wow, this is an amazing, intelligent summary of what has happened to the Republican Party and the division in this country. You are spot on with every point. I found myself yelling, “YES” the whole time while listening. It’s validating to hear from someone such as yourself what a I’ve been saying and thinking for the past couple of years. I live in Texas and am surrounded by hard core Republicans and people that don’t get what is happening and claim to be “somewhere in the middle”. There is no middle here-they just don’t care. Keep up the good work getting the information out there! Bravo!

A mask works better when one wears them properly: no chin straps, no under the nose, etc. I saw a guy take his off TO SNEEZE in a drug store a couple of weeks ago.

Thank you so much for this!! I stumbled upon your Twitter announcement completely by chance and was hooked. I appreciate your style and candor. You articulate exactly what I've been feeling. I'm guilty of having avoided politics most of my life. I woke up when Trump won the primary. If there's any silver lining, it's that I started paying attention. When he was elected, my image of this country and who we were as a people wasn't just shattered, but obliterated. I was completely traumatized for the following 4 years. He was everywhere and you couldn't get away from him. I honestly don't know what I will do if that man gets elected again. There's still so much nonsense, I find myself in complete disbelief and disgust half the time. New subscriber!! Thank you again!!
