In this episode of the Seeking Wellness Podcast, we chat with Tye Bergeson, a local yoga instructor that teaches at both Yoga London and CrossFit AMROCK. We dive into some fantastic conversation, including: Tye's personal health journey and how profoundly yoga has impacted his life. Misconceptions about yoga, what it is, its benefits for overall health, and how it can serve as a beneficial supplement to other fitness regimes like CrossFit. Different yoga styles and the structure of a typical yoga class. If you've been curious about yoga or looking for other ways to enhance your health and fitness journey, this is a must listen! We also touch on Tye's upcoming workshops titled 'Joy and Awareness,' which is designed to discover how and why we feel joy and start to discover the unrecognized joy that already exists in our lives. Back with longtime friend of the podcast, Rocky McDowell, CF-L3 and co-owner of CrossFit AMROCK: in this episode we dive into some of the biggest myths that are prevalent in the CrossFit community. Anywhere from mild misconceptions to things that are just flat out not true! We cover eight of them in pretty good detail: "I need to be in shape to do CrossFit" "I can’t do those exercises (weights, pull ups, muscle ups, running) so I can’t do CrossFit" "CrossFitters don't care about form" "I’m going to get hurt doing CrossFit" "I don't want to get bulky" "I don’t want to compete and CrossFit is only about competition" "I’m not comfortable taking my shirt off to work out, and all CrossFitters take their clothes off to work out" "I’m too old, young, overweight, skinny, weak, etc to do CrossFit" Some of these we've touched on in previous episodes, some of these we're going to take a deeper dive into in future episodes, but all really valuable insights if you are open to challenging some of your beliefs. Have you heard any of these before? What do you think? Let us know!
In this JAM PACKED episode full of so many great anecdotes and pieces of advice, I am joined with returning guest Rocky McDowell as we interview Cristina Anderson, a level 4 CrossFit coach who is extremely passionate about creating a welcoming, empathetic environment for everyone, wherever they may be, in their fitness journey. Cristina lives in Massachusetts, but is making a special trip to Idaho Falls next week to help instill those same values here. In our discussion, we ask Cristina to share her thoughts on topics such as: What is your personal mission with CrossFit and the fitness space at large? What are your own mental and physical health struggles that you dealt with? What's the big deal with empathy and why do you think it's so foundational to helping people transform their lives? Do you need to be fit to do CrossFit? What's the difference between physical appearance vs physical function? Why is it important to shift your mindset from focusing on what your body LOOKS like vs what your body can DO? Why CrossFit vs a much cheaper gym membership? Empathy is at the heart of Cristina's practice, and if you've ever felt like you're out of place or "not worthy" to be working out in a gym, then you'll absolutely want to take a listen to this. Also, special announcement: If you have any inkling of making a positive health change and trying CrossFit, wondering what it's all about, if it's for you, and how it can literally change your life, then you're in luck. Rocky and Cristina are teaming up and hosting a FREE workshop for the Idaho Falls community on July 22, 2023. More details here in the Facebook event. If you have questions about the workshop, please reach out to either me or CrossFit AMROCK via their website or through one of their social channels on Instagram, Facebook, or TikTok. If you want to get in touch with Cristina, you can message her on Instagram. ____________________ Pain or injury holding you back from your normal fitness routine? Throughout our discussion, we answer questions like: What is CrossFit? How do you define and objectively measure fitness? What does a CrossFit workout look like? Throughout the episode, Rocky breaks all of this down, discussing CrossFit methodology, the importance of community, and how CrossFit is adaptable to different abilities and can be scaled to meet individuals where they're at on their fitness journey. In this episode, we have a fun conversation, continuing in the mental health realm, but in a little bit different niche. I get the joy of speaking with Susannah Pipkin of Olive Branch Counseling. Susannah is a LCSW and also a PhD candidate who has a primary interest in sex therapy and how it can strengthen and foster better relationships.  We talk about: What is sex therapy and what are some common misconceptions about it? What kind of people or couples benefit from sex therapy? Strategies for connection and why you might want to see a counselor, even if things are "okay."  Susannah is a big advocate for education and learning and wanted to provide a few resources for people that might be interested in exploring more what sex therapy is about but aren't quite ready to take the leap yet.  Come As You Are by Emily Nagoski Religious Specific Podcasts (LDS) Dr. Anthony Hughes Dr. Chelom Leavitt Tammy Hill For Jewish Listeners The Joy of Text For Christians Kingdom Sexuality Non Religious Sex Therapists/List of Sexuality Podcasts https://www.optimalsexualexperiences.com/ go to PODCASTS tab Local Providers Dr. Jacob Curtis Dr. Matthew Larsen Dr. Cameron Staley If you're interested in learning more about Susannah and her practice, you can check out her website, follow her on Instagram, or email her at susannah@olivebranchcounselingidaho.com  ____________________ Pain or injury holding you back from your normal fitness routine? Ep 15 | Dry Needling

Ep 15 | Dry Needling

2022-08-1619:53

In this episode, I cover what dry needling is, what some of the theories are behind how it works, and how I use it in my practice today!  There are lots of cool applications apart from just pain relief, including athletic recovery, pre-athletic performance, and improving mobility! Interested? Reach out to me at info@invictusrxhealth.com and we'll get in touch! invictusrxhealth.com
In this episode, I got to sit down and chat with Dr. Mike Cardinal, DC and strength coach. He has a great, modern take on incorporating exercise and rehab principles into his chiropractic care. He wants you to be self-reliant, and he is concerned with one thing: having you break personal records! Listen in to hear us his talk about his own journey with injury, lifting, and chiropractic care, how he tries to inspire his patient during their rehab, and ultimately why it’s so important to him to remain strong. https://www.stronglifechiro.com/ https://www.instagram.com/strong.life.performance/
In this episode, we're back with Easton Drake from Bodybuilding.com to discuss more of the fitness aspects that he enjoys and participates in. While he's personally most invested in bodybuilding (of course), he has some experience with powerlifting, a blend called powerbuilding, and has even taken a dive (from afar) into CrossFit. We talk general philosophy and goals, rep schemes and different program variations, and why you should be doing some sort of movement that you enjoy!  Check out a recent article on the CrossFit Open here!  @eastondrake16 on IG
In this episode, I get the pleasure of speaking with Dr. A Shuravloff, a family medicine resident that works at the Community Family Clinic here in Idaho Falls.  She brings a wide variety of military and personal experiences to her approach on lifestyle medicine and is an amazing advocate for helping patients be less reliant on the medical system and being able to take their health into their own hands.  Listen in as we talk about one of her favorite hobbies (dog sledding) and how she factors in nutrition, mental health, and physical activity into her approach to help her patients be more self sufficient.  https://idahocfc.org/staff/
In this episode of the Seeking Wellness Podcast, I chat with an incredible friend and colleague of mine, Sutter Wyatt. He is a truly exceptional clinician and human being that embodies the tide that helps lift all ships. And although we do share a similar passion for golf, our recreational fitness preferences are very different.  As an official Iron Man athlete, Sutter has a unique insight on not only training as an endurance athlete, but working with them in a rehab and therapy capacity. Tune in to hear some of his thoughts on what he looks at when treating runners, common training mistakes he sees, thoughts on how he is trying to personalize PT, or if you just need some overall positive sentiment in your life.  @sutherlandbwyatt  CPR Physical Therapy and Performance
In this episode, I talk about 5 scenarios and analogies to help you better understand the complex experience of pain. Most of the time, it's really not as simple as A problem = B pain.  I talk about sunburns, brain freezes, hot tubs, a nail in your boot, sprained ankles, and allergies! Listen in to find out what these all have in common and how they relate to your pain experience! The book I am referencing for most of these analogies can be found here.
Hey outdoor enthusiasts!  Have you ever rolled your ankle while trekking up a mountain? Or hurt your back trying to bend down and pack everything up? Tyler Burke is a physical therapist that specializes in helping this group of people specifically, all from the comfort of their own home, too.  Tune in to this episode to learn about how Tyler uses telehealth and online programs to get people ready for hiking season injury free so they can pursue their favorite adventures! All proceeds donated to Camp Hayden to help kids and families with special needs enjoy the outdoors. Link to register here!
Continuing with our pain series, in this episode I discuss what manual therapy is and dive into some common misconceptions about it. I'm definitely not ANTI manual therapy; in fact I like using it in my practice, but I think the narrative around what it's doing and what it isn't doing is important (hint: it's probably not doing what you have been told it's doing).  Tune in to find out what those 3 things are, and why I still think it's beneficial to use!  Let me know if you have questions on this! I'd love to chat about it some more.
In this episode, I talk with Dr. Julie Jenner, a physical therapist that specializes in women's health (no that does not mean she only treats women) about all things core and pelvic floor, some common misconceptions and beliefs about pelvic health in general, and some amazing advice on an incredible resource that more people should know about! If you have a pelvic floor (you do), then you should give this a listen! Julie has a workshop coming up at CrossFit AMROCK on Saturday, January 15 to discuss how your pelvic floor plays a critical role in your core strength. In this episode, I sit down to reconnect with an old friend, Easton Drake. He is a Talent and Training Specialist in the customer service department at BodyBuilding.com We talk about his personal journey into the health and fitness industry, who Bodybuilding.com aims to help, and the three main categories of supplements that they use to help their clients achieve better results. Listen in to hear from a genuinely nice guy that really doesn't want you to take supplements just for the sake of taking them.
Seems a little bit counterintuitive given the current state of the medical system nowadays and our over-reliance on imaging, I know. But there's some good reasons why! 1. It creates FUD (Fear, Uncertainty, and Doubt) about your body and the healing process. 2. Imaging has a poor correlation to pain.  3. Most of the time, it doesn't change how I'm going to evaluate or treat you.  Listen in for a more detailed response to my answers!
In this episode, I talk with Bill Ayzin, one of the co-owners of the long-standing, local business Wealth of Health Natural Market. We talk about his transition from electrical engineering into the nutrition and supplement industry, gluten intolerance, how he strives to add a personal touch to this complicated field, and much more! You can find more information about them online below, but Bill does of course encourage you to come into the store!  https://wealthofhealthnutrition.com/ https://www.facebook.com/woh120 https://www.instagram.com/woh120/ invictusrxhealth.com
In this episode, I dive into the history of pain, how it's evolved from a specific problem to more of a complex experience, I explain what pain is and how understanding it can help your overall outcome! This is part 1 in a mini series discussing pain science and some commonly held beliefs about pain.
In this episode, we talk with Lauren Parrett, the founder of Prepp'd, a local meal-prep and delivery company that strives to offer healthy food options for people on a time crunch. We discuss the transformation that she underwent in her personal health journey as well as her entrepreneurial ventures, the importance of taking small steps and celebrating little wins, and how that all inspired her mission to better the community through food.  Up until Christmas of this year, they have teamed up with Social Hustle to create a fundraising goal of 1000 Prepp'd meals to feed those in need this holiday season.
