Description

Roll With The Punches is where we step into the ring and go toe to toe with the hard sh*t life throws our way.

Hosted by former boxing champ turned strength coach and speaker Tiff Cook, RWTP brings you big conversations with world-class guests about psychology, relationships, trauma, the brain, and the patterns that can make a bloody mess of our lives.

If you're curious about human behaviour, keen to challenge the stories you tell yourself, and want to understand why the hell you do what you do, you're in the right place. Tune in. Tiff's in your corner.

The goal? To question what you've always believed, understand yourself a little better, and turn those aha moments into actual change.

Because knowing better and doing better are two very different things.

And let's be honest... life's gonna keep throwing punches. We may as well learn how to roll with them.

What happens when you break into a federal facility to retrieve your own helmet, then have to convince the bloke who runs an airline that you're not a complete liability? Well, of course our Scotty Douglas has a story for that.  Yep, old mate's back, and as usual, we've managed to cover a ridiculous amount of ground. There's a cracker of a story involving federal police, a potentially ruined career and a $283 bottle of scotch that may or may not have helped save his arse. Seriously, you couldn't make this sh*t up if you tried... But underneath the stories and the lols, we also got back into the whole 'hard things' conversation, why getting comfortable with being uncomfortable matters, and why the hard thing that helps you grow isn't necessarily the one you're already good at.  Oh, and Scotty, we're still waiting for book number three. Get cracking, kid. Why do we sometimes push people away before they even get the chance to hurt us? And how much of what we call our personality is actually a bunch of survival strategies we picked up as kids? I had an absolute cracker of a conversation with psychoanalyst Dr. Galit Atlas, who just happens to be the author of Come Closer, about childhood wounds, adult relationships and the stuff we carry into our grown-up lives without even realising it. If you're a sucker to exploring the protective patterns we develop, the stories we tell ourselves to justify our behaviours, and things like Tiff Cook's emotional avoidance, abandonment issues and other dysfunctional adaptations she's had to overcome so far (or still has a way to go with) then buckle up for the ride and hit play on this bad boy... Why do we keep getting in our own way, even when we bloody know better? Beck King and I get stuck into the patterns, fears and stories that keep us repeating the same shit, why the problem isn't always the problem, and what it takes to actually make a change. Beck shares some of her own journey through depression, anxiety and grief, and we talk about why knowing what to do and actually doing it are two very different things. Because let's be honest, most of us don't need another book, podcast or course telling us what to do (except this one, obviously 😂). We need to figure out why we're not doing the bloody thing in the first place. If you're sick of getting in your own way, this one's for you. How much of your potential are you leaving on the table because you're waiting for the right time to get your sh*t together? We do we humans cling to comfort, certainty and the familiar, even when they're the very things keeping us stuck? Harps and I bang on in this ep about the stories we tell ourselves, the ways we resist the things that could help us grow, and why being willing to suck at something is often the price of actually getting better at it. I share a few recent realisations about myself and my tendency to resist the very help for, insist on doing things my own way, and then discover that the thing I was pushing back against was actually pretty bloody useful. Whoopies. 😂 But here's the thing. Ya don't need to have it all figured out... Ya don't need to feel confident... And ya definitely don't need to wait for the stars to align. Being willing to adapt, do things differently, learn as you go, and take action before you feel completely comfortable is where it's at! And if you're waiting for the perfect time to start, take a look at your watch now... I think it's bloody time! Why do we sometimes find it easier to jump off a cliff, swim in massive surf or lift a stupidly heavy weight than have an honest conversation about how we're actually feeling? Well, these are some of the questions Scotty and I get stuck into as we explore the whole hard things conversation, and why the thing that looks courageous on the outside isn't always the thing we're actually scared of. So if you're up for a chat about why we deliberately put ourselves in dangerous situations, how our childhoods shape the way we operate, and why some of us would rather do everything the hard way than ask for a bloody hand... this might be the one for you! Scotty shares some exceptional life tips, including how his fear of looking stupid has sometimes seen him throw a metaphorical hand grenade into a situation rather than admit he doesn't know how to do something. Which, let's be honest, is one way to handle it. Not necessarily the best way, though. There's a bit of ADHD, a few uncomfortable truths, some excellent examples of Scotty being Scotty, and a reminder that doing hard things is pretty bloody useful. But understanding WHY we're doing them is where the rubber really hits the road.
