Description
I discuss ATC blog posts, with supplementary information, stories, and the reasons why I thought the topic was worth writing about, and worth reading about. Thus, a doublecut of these topics. This covers grass selection, playability, and all the work done to create a certain type of turfgrass surface.

Brian Whitlark is the West region director of the USGA Green Section. We talked about total organic material testing of turfgrass soils. This is distinct from soil organic matter testing. Soil organic matter is measured on material that has already passed a 2 mm sieve and thus is no larger than a grain of sand. This sieving removes much of the thatch and mat and living plant material from the sample.
There's more about this, including definitions of various items related to this, in https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/organic-matter-terminology-in-turfgrass-soils/
You can see how a soil sample is tested in this video from Brookside Labs https://youtu.be/PyL2bfdiBdE
Richard Forsyth from Royal Melbourne also spoke about something related to the shear strength that Brian and I discussed https://www.youtube.com/live/T-w6CQzGzKc?feature=share

Dandelion (Taraxacum officinale) abundance can be increased by potassium (K) and lime applications. Adding K fertilizer when it is not needed by the grass, or adding lime to increase the pH when the grass does not require such an adjustment, could lead to increased competitiveness of dandelions in that sward. Some links for this episode include:- My dandelions and potassium post: https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/potassium-dandelions/- Tilman et al.'s article on biological weed control of dandelions: https://doi.org/10.1890/1051-0761(1999)009[0103:BWCVNC]2.0.CO;2- The article with Frank Rossi about Park Grass from the Green Section Record: https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/fertilizer-and-weeds-at-park-grass/- Park Grass photo gallery: https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/park-grass-photos/- Rothamsted's Park Grass experiment video: https://youtu.be/-3-Pm5JUQZ4

I used to tell people that GP is just a number, and if they wanted to modify it to fit the way grass grows at their location, then go ahead and do so. I don't say that anymore. Instead, I recommend using the standard equation. Why? To facilitate direct comparisons between sites, knowing that everyone has used the same equation.I discussed this blog post: https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/regarding-gp-and-adjustments/PACE Turf's updated listing of turf diagnostic labs is available at: https://www.paceturf.org/public/turf_diagnostic_labsRead more about OM246 tests at: https://www.asianturfgrass.com/project/om246/

March in Japan is the start of cherry blossom season, and on golf courses there is a lot of aerification. I've noticed that golf courses in Japan generally don't do as much surface area removal as is common in some other parts of the world. But the surfaces can still perform. I discuss this in this episode, and have a look at this post from the ATC blog: https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/springtime-golf-course-maintenance-in-japan/Read more about all kinds of turfgrass topics at https://www.asianturfgrass.com/Find turfgrass information and decision-making tools at https://www.paceturf.org/See the PACE Turf YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/paceturfSee the ATC newsletters at https://subscribepage.com/atc_newslettersListen to the ATC Doublecut with Micah Woods podcast at https://atc-doublecut.transistor.fm/Listen to the ATC Office Hours podcast at https://atc-office-hours.transistor.fm/
I explained what the growth ratio is and showed the equation used to calculate growth ratio. This simple equation takes the measured clipping volume and adjusts it by the temperature. Jason Haines developed the growth ratio and has found it quite useful. You can see that equation in this ATC blog post: https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/the-growth-ratio-equation/Read more about all kinds of turfgrass topics at https://www.asianturfgrass.com/Find turfgrass information and decision-making tools at https://www.paceturf.org/See the PACE Turf YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/paceturfSee the ATC newsletters at https://subscribepage.com/atc_newslettersListen to the ATC Doublecut with Micah Woods podcast at https://atc-doublecut.transistor.fm/Listen to the ATC Office Hours podcast at https://atc-office-hours.transistor.fm/
One of the common questions about #ClipVol is "what is a normal amount of clippings to get?" By using the growth ratio, it's possible to account for the temperature conditions through the year and from that calculate how many clippings would be normal for any day in the year. The specific blog post discussed was https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/what-should-my-clipvol-be/You can see the growth ratio equation in this post: https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/the-growth-ratio-equation/Other links discussed in this episode include:- growth ratio posts on the ATC site https://www.asianturfgrass.com/tag/growth-ratio/- growth ratio posts on Jason Haines' blog https://fusariummy.blogspot.com/search/label/growth%20ratio- the GP Avatar app https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/the-gp-avatar-is-updated/- turf videos organized by playlists https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/turf-video-playlists/- new seminar handouts section on the ATC site https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/new-seminar-section/- that information-packed 20 minute podcast with Chris Tritabaugh and Adam Moeller https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/putting-green-measurements/Read more about all kinds of turfgrass topics at https://www.asianturfgrass.com/Find turfgrass information and decision-making tools at https://www.paceturf.org/See the PACE Turf YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/paceturfSee the ATC newsletters at https://subscribepage.com/atc_newslettersListen to the ATC Doublecut with Micah Woods podcast at https://atc-doublecut.transistor.fm/Listen to the ATC Office Hours podcast at https://atc-office-hours.transistor.fm/
Bill Kreuser joined to answer all the questions I could think of related to plant growth regulators (PGR). We discussed re-application intervals based on growing degree days for multiple turf species, and a lot of things related to growth rate and PGR use in general. Some of the items we discussed include:- The blog post getting the ATC Doublecut treatment, https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/using-plant-growth-regulators-on-golf-course-putting-greens/- Bill's GSR article from 2015, Effective use of plant growth regulators on golf putting greens: https://gsr.lib.msu.edu/article/kreuser-effective-4-3-15.pdf- Reasor et al.'s article on Growing Degree Day Models for Plant Growth Regulator Applications on Ultradwarf Hybrid Bermudagrass Putting Greens: https://doi.org/10.2135/cropsci2018.01.0077- Brown et al.'s article on Growing degree-days optimize trinexapac-ethyl reapplications on ultradwarf bermudagrass putting greens: II. In 2020, I looked at the temperatures in Augusta during the April Masters Tournament week, and the temperatures in November during the re-scheduled Masters dates. Soil nutrient levels might change more rapidly than you realize. This has implications for whether nutrients should be applied as fertilizer, or not. I showed data from an experiment I did when I was a graduate student in this blog post:https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/soil-nutrient-levels-change/Jason Haines has written about a similar topic, and explained it perhaps more clearly than I have. I recommend his blog post on "Do you have enough?": https://fusariummy.blogspot.com/2023/02/do-you-have-enough.htmlTo read more about this experiment, see this chapter in my dissertation: http://archive.lib.msu.edu/tic/thesdiss/woods2006h.pdfRead more about all kinds of turfgrass topics at https://www.asianturfgrass.com/Find turfgrass information and decision-making tools at https://www.paceturf.org/See the PACE Turf YouTube channel at https://www.youtube.com/user/paceturfSee the ATC newsletters at https://subscribepage.com/atc_newslettersListen to the ATC Doublecut with Micah Woods podcast at https://atc-doublecut.transistor.fm/Listen to the ATC Office Hours podcast at https://atc-office-hours.transistor.fm/
I recommend keeping the soil pH between 5.5 and 8.5 when you are managing fine turfgrass. This episode explains why that is the recommended range, and also considers the recent GCSAA nutrient survey and the phenomenon of different N, P, and K application rates between those who soil test and those who do not.The blog posts discussed in this episode are:

Turfgrass soil test interpretation and the fertilizer recommendations that come from that have been highlighted as "arbitrary" and "based on other crops" and "needing more research." I suggest the #MLSN method as a way to bypass a lot of these problems, and Dr. Beth Guertal joined me to talk about this fascinating topic. We discussed the post "Best judgment of the agronomist" which has a link to the #MLSN cheat sheet, plenty of quotes from the past 50 years about this problem, and links to plenty of information about making sure you apply just the right amount of fertilizer: https://www.asianturfgrass.com/post/best-judgment-of-the-agronomist/
