December 6 is “St. Nicholas Day.” What better way to celebrate than to singing-a-long with Mister Chuck (Chuck Hartman). St. Nicholas is known for selling his worldly possessions and giving his money to the poor—dedicating his life to serving suffering people. Stories about St. Nicholas became part of the inspiration for the modern-day Santa Claus. Mister Chuck invites children and their ‘special adult’ (parent, grandparent, aunt, uncle, sitter, et cetera) to join him as he sings.
“Jolly Old Saint Nicholas” originated as a poem by Emily Huntington Miller (1833-1913), published as “Lilly’s Secret” in December 1865. The music, first published in 1874, is believed to be by James R. Murray.

Chuck Hartman sings about managing angry, mad feelings. He talks with children about a time he was so angry that he felt like hitting. Instead of hitting, he created a finger painting for his mom. Chuck explains that he no longer felt out of control of his emotions once he finished his painting. Sometimes making and creating are excellent ways to manage out-of-control emotions.
