The Spruce Goose

The Spruce Goose

2023-02-0815:00

During the height of the Second World War, American shipping to Europe was constantly being attacked by German U-boats.  In an attempt to completely bypass German subs, aviation pioneer Howard Hughes began construction on what would be the world’s largest aircraft.  A plane that was so large it could carry 750 passengers or two full-sized tanks across the Atlantic.  Sadly, it was hampered by wartime rationing of metals and only flew in one memorable test flight. There have been many really bad years in world history. There have been World Wars, the Black Death, and horrific natural disasters, all of which have made for very bad years.  However, many historians have come to the conclusion that the worst year in the history of humanity was a year that in and of itself was pretty bad but also ushered in a decade of bad years.  Moreover, it wasn’t bad for a single region or even continent, it was bad for everyone on the planet. Humans have probably had the desire to fly ever since they saw the first bird fly in the air.  Flying, as it turned out, was a very challenging problem for creatures without wings.  Throughout the 19th century, many people tackled the problem without success. "When war broke out in 1941...."?? Come on. Is that what they teach in your country? You mean, "When the US finally got involved in the war that had been going on for 2 years..."

This is my first ever comment for an amazing podcast. That being said. Most of this episode is inaccurate and Gary, is not your fault. Naismith wanted it that way. He stole the game and the roles and made them his own. Lambert Will was the inventory of basketball. He invented it months before James did. It has already been proven. The National Basketball Hall of Fame had an entire exhibit dedicated to Lambert Will and his invention of basketball, which disappeared or have been seen since it was displayed and then removed. This comment could go on forever Gary. I would love it if you researched that story and did an episode about that. Then we could hear the real story. Great podcast and I am proud to be part of the "completionist club" . Can't wait for the keys to the clubhouse with the secret entrance tunnel.

Interesting explanation involving flower girls dancing around a pole , springtime celebrations in Europe, military parades, and distress signals. all of which bear no relation to each other. I can't help but wonder if the origin of strippers dancing around a pole has it's roots in a twisted version of the young Roman girls dancing around a pole in celebration of Spring.
