Have you learned so much about the meat and dairy industries and/or the benefits of a plant-based diet but the one thing holding you back from embracing the "vegan" title is the fear of change? The anxiety of challenging the status quo? Do you have worries like-- what about the holidays? And what do I tell my family? And why are they reacting like this? And why are people so defensive? And why don't they understand? And how do I deal with travel? ...you're not alone! Colleen Patrick-Goudreau is a recognized expert and thought leader on the culinary, social, ethical, and practical aspects of living vegan; she is an award-winning author of 7 books, and an acclaimed speaker with over 16 years of podcasting. Colleen joins Katie Kurpanek, Eco-Living Coach and Podcast Host, to break down the social barriers and fears that often keep us from living in full alignment with the compassion we have at our core. These social aspects are usually the determining factors as to whether or not someone becomes vegan / stays vegan, so it feels right to be wrapping up our series on veganism with this interview.  If you want to learn how to find your voice and become empowered enough to use it with confidence, even beyond the "vegan" conversation -- this episode is for you!Contact Info for Colleen Patrick-Goudreau:Colleen's website with books, vegan cooking classes, international vegan trips, podcasts, blogs, videos and more! Her 30-Day Vegan ChallengeColleen's 2 acclaimed podcasts (running for over 16 years)Books by Colleen Patrick-GoudreauAdditional Resources:Diet for a New America book by John RobbinsSlaughterhouse book by Gail A. Is it ethical to push for a plant-based / vegan world? Is the modern vegan movement dismissing entire people groups and cultures? What is "white veganism" and how does this often differ from vegans within the BIPOC community? How can we push for less animal consumption without addressing the food disparities within our broken systems? Jen Rivera Bell and Ashley Renne Nsonwu are 2 vegan mamas, social media influencers, and strong advocates for intersectionality within sustainable living and policy change. They join Katie Kurpanek, Eco-Living Coach and Podcast Host, to share their personal experiences being vegan, how it's impacted their experience and perspectives on food, cultures, and family traditions, and also the vast disparities and inequities in our food distribution systems that must be addressed. You won't want to miss a moment of this conversation, it's so eye-opening and inspiring. If you've ever been oppressed and carried the weight of an unjust system, you will likely recognize the blueprints of oppression elsewhere when you see it. Are you or a loved one suffering from heart disease, cancer, diabetes, high cholesterol, or chronic pain? Has anyone ever told you how these conditions (and more) can be prevented as well as reversible in many cases? And when you've heard about a vegan (or plant-based) diet, have you ever wondered if it's actually a good fit for everyone, or if there's anybody who should not eat this way?  Dr. Neal Barnard is one of the world's leading medical experts on type 2 diabetes, with a ground-breaking study funded by the National Institutes of Health showing how this condition can be reversible for many patients. He is the author of over 100 scientific publications, 20 books for medical and lay readers, and has produced award-winning work that has also contributed key nutritional resolutions that are now part of AMA (American Medical Association) policy. He has hosted 4 PBS television programs on nutrition and health, as well as appearing in documentaries like "What the Health" and "Forks Over Knives."  Dr. Neal joins Katie Kurpanek, Eco-Living Coach and Podcast Host, to share about benefits and risks of the vegan / plant-based diet to our physical health, how we can prevent and/or reverse the most common medical conditions, as well as clearing up LOTS of misinformation and myths about nutrition, diet, and physical health. "We never take anything on faith. We have reasons for doing the studies we do, we put things to the test, we submit them to peer reviewed journals. And I mean, we have to be right. And then when we are right, we make sure that the medical community knows about it." - Dr. Neal Barnard, Episode 20 of the "All Things Sustainable" podcast Additional Resources:Dr. Neal's website: www.pcrm.org21 Day Kickstart - free program and app-------BRAND NEW video course: "Caring for the Earth & Kids"Empower yourself and your family with a lifestyle that will sustainably save your time, money, and the earth around you! Have you ever felt like you needed to hold back your truth for the sake of someone else's approval? Do you struggle to communicate effectively in ways that feel like both/multiple perspectives are being shared and truly heard? Have you found it challenging to navigate the trends of social media and current cultural norms while trying to find your own voice through it all?  Clare Mann, Vegan Psychologist, Existential Psychotherapist, best-selling author, speaker, advocate, AND communications trainer, joins Katie Kurpanek, Eco-Living Coach and Podcast Host, to share examples of effective communication within relationships. As part of her job and her personal nature, she shares "provocative" questions and thoughts that challenge both social and media norms, and she shares many "inconvenient truths" she has learned over the years as well. How many of you have that one friend who’s always scoring incredible deals while thrifting? How many of you want that friend to teach you how to do this for yourself?? Ugochi Nwaneri, Professional Personal Thrifter & Creator of Thrift 'n Prosper, is that friend for you! She  joins Katie Kurpanek, Eco-Living Coach and Podcast Host, to share her personal experiences in the world of thrifting and gives amazing tips to help YOU thrift like a pro... Really putting the "pro" in Thrift 'n Prosper! ;) From her website: “Inspired by her Angel mommy, thrifting has largely been incorporated into Ugochi’s life since early childhood, and over the years, it has allowed her to further explore fashion through a more sustainable lens. Thrifting not only for herself, but for others as well, is an art form she takes pride in and truly enjoys." In Ugochi's experiences growing up, thrifting wasn’t viewed as a trend or an art-form. Much of her story resonated with my own – being raised in a big family on a tight budget and depending on hand-me-downs and thrifted treasures. We may not have felt it back then, but we both know now that shopping secondhand is truly an art where you can find nice things for less cost, and it’s the most sustainable option, too! Ugochi can thrift with you, thrift for you, or you can even shop from her online boutique of thrifted treasures. Is this you? Maybe you look around your home and you feel a sense of chaos rather than peace and calm. Maybe you and your partner are moving in together and finding space for the new combination of things is proving to be challenging. Maybe you feel weighed down by gifts you've been keeping out of guilt because you don't want to hurt the person who gave them to you. Maybe your family has recently lost a loved one, or you're moving your 90-year-old aunt into assisted living, and your family is trying to process what to do with 60+ years of stuff... Whatever your situation, this is for you.  Claudia Winkler, Professional Organizer and Founder of WOW! Organized! LLC, joins Katie Kurpanek, Eco-Living Coach and Podcast Host, to inspire and equip you with the tools you need to create a living space that embodies who you truly are. As we are discussing becoming more conscious consumers in this season, Claudia beautifully addresses the full life-cycle of our items: from how to mindfully bring things into our home, to making the most of each item, and then finally considering how to responsibly and sustainably declutter when that time has come. Claudia's work involves so much more than simply organizing, however. She supports people to not only find a home for their things, but to find themselves in the process. Additional Resources:My blog post on how to donate items responsibly (April 2020)If you want to shop online with KindNest and support my business in the process, please use my affiliate link here! How many times have you found yourself in a bind where you need a product and can't find it in stores or, for the sake of time, it's just easier to buy it online? You're not alone -- there were roughly 256 million online shoppers in 2020, and that number is increasing every year! But did you know that shopping online CAN be better for the environment (and for people) when done thoughtfully? Rachel Kois, CEO and Founder of Simple Switch, joins Katie Kurpanek, Eco-Living Coach and Podcast Host, to share her story of building an easy-to-use, online platform with currently over 4,000 products -- each with a direct social and/or environmental impact! Rachel is a "stubborn idealist" who firmly believes we can change our systems and infrastructures so that our consumer habits make positive impacts on this world, rather than the harm we're more often seeing today. Simple Switch is all about encouraging people to do the best they can, take one step at a time, and is not into pressuring with shame-based tactics but instead opts to make these choices super easy and accessible to anyone! Welcome to the first interview of Season 2! In this season, we're talking about how to become more conscious consumers, and if I've learned anything in the past few years it's that if my activism isn't intersectional, then it's lacking. If you want ONE place to turn to so that you can be sure your purchases are supporting small, sustainable businesses owned by Black, Indigenous, and/or People of Color -- our guest in this episode has created that exact platform, for free! Akua Yamoah Opoku, an entrepreneur and creator of the AYO Business Finder, joins Katie Kurpanek, Eco-Living Coach and Podcast Host, to share about her one-stop-shop for clothing, jewelry/accessories, home decor, skincare, food, shoes and more that are all owned and produced by 200+ BIPOC business owners! This platform is set up much like a Yelp-type search engine and is a completely free resource. Akua is calling us IN to do more than just performative support for our BIPOC friends and communities -- it's time to use our buying power to make a greater impact. Akua also shares very personally how the murder of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and the resurgence of the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020 really became the fuel for this platform. I'm in awe of Akua's work and the education she's also putting out into the world! I encourage you to lean in to the discomfort you may feel in this episode and listen in order to understand. If you're ready to make a real impact with your shopping habits, check out the AYO Business Finder  and see Akua's full bio below, as well.  -------This show is brought to you by listener support, and I'm sending a huge shout-out to these patrons for making it happen: Elizabeth R, Nancy K, Sarah W, Jodi S, Julia B, Liliana S, Karyn W, Linda M, Detlef K, and Kelly K!To become a patron and receive all the perks of this community, visit www.patreon.com/allthingssustainable and join for as low as $3/month!-------To learn more with your host and Eco-Living Coach, Katie Kurpanek, visit www.thatminimallife.com for blog posts and personalized coaching info!Instagram: @that.minimal.lifeEmail: katie.thatminimallife@gmail.com-------TRANSCRIPTS FOR EACH EPISODE can be found here: https://allthingssustainable.buzzsprout.com-------More about Akua Yamoah Opoku and the AYO Business Finder:AYO Business FinderFollow on Instagram and TikTok @ AYO Business Finder"Akua Yamoah Opoku is a Ghanaian-American woman with a dream to leave her planet better than she found it.
