Today I'm happy to share another episode devoted to a book of short stories that I recently finished reading: Sontag's 'Debriefing', of which the final story is "The Way We Live Now." My notes on the short story are organized in three parts, and a text version of this episode (with relevant images) exists at https://panic-kyle.medium.com/the-way-we-live-now-ec6c203cd480 .

Today's episode is all about a contemporary play that was slated to premiere in March 2020, but was delayed due to the pandemic. It is now being programmed across the U.S. My guest and I discuss the play itself, as well as how the process of reading a play differs from that of a novel.

Susan Sontag's "On Photography" is a seminal work about the practice and art of photography. Written in the 1970s, it remains to be a text that is studied by hobbyists, professionals, historians, and academics alike. My guest, who is a professional photographer based in Indianapolis, discusses his reaction to the work, his disagreements, and a once-unknown photographer that Sontag devotes much of one chapter to.

"Brensham Village" by John Moore is the story of the inhabitants and community of an English country town. Set against the backdrop of the two world wars, it's been described as "beautifully drawn" and "charming."

Today's episode features some remarks about a series of books that has haunted me since the final page –- the Rabbit books of John Updike. Each iteration in the quartet of books is of a different decade: Rabbit Run (1960), Rabbit Redux (1971), Rabbit is Rich (1981), and Rabbit at Rest (1990), which allows for a charting of American history alongside the characters. Hope you enjoy hearing my thoughts about the puzzling, maddening, baroque, upsetting, but ultimately rewarding books, along with some thoughts about Updike himself.
