Did you know the horror film The Exorcist is based on a real Biblical concept? It comes from the idea of demonic possession, something we see Jesus confronting in the New Testament. However, demons aren't what most people think they are! In fact, Satan is not a demon. Demons are something else entirely! At least not according to the original beliefs of Judaism and early Christianity! So what is the demon Pazuzu and why is he frightening? In this video we discuss what makes the Exorcist scary from a faith-based perspective, the origin of demons in the Bible and why that leads them to possess humans. We also discuss some behind-the-scenes facts about the movie and some fun movie trivia, plus we talk about Doug and Drew's trip to one of the actual locations used in the movie! We pool our knowledge of theology and movie fandom in this unusual analysis of demons in the 1973 movie The Exorcist starring Linda Blair and Max Von Sydow. Hi Fidelity might be a surprising choice as a spiritual film, but if you look closely it actually contains deeply spiritual themes. It could be argued that John Cusack's character bears deep scars from previous broken relationships. He is a troubled character who, over the course of the film, slowly learns to overcome his own character flaws and relationship struggles. As he tries to figure out what it is about himself that pushes others away, he realizes he's actually attracted to women who aren't necessarily good for him. He'll wrestle with his own understanding of what love is and whether or not he's capable of loving others well, and even make some changes in his own life. Through a spiritual lens, it is a fascinating character study of someone going through a dark time. Did you know The Matrix is jam-packed full of spiritual themes and Biblical ideas? Scattered throughout the film are the names of Biblical places and characters such as Trinity, Zion and more. There's even a prophecy about "The One," which is eerily similar to the prophecy within Judaism and Christianity about a Messiah. The original 1999 Matrix film introduced the concept of two worlds; one physical and one... spiritual? It depends on how you interpret it, but we had some fun discussing the spiritual parallels, some that were put intentionally into the film and others that may simply show a close similarity to a familiar concept. We compare Neo to Jesus, Agent Smith to Satan and his angels, and most interestingly, what the film says about how difficult it is for someone to change the way they see the world.
