With the holidays around the corner this episode with Yo is inspired by some of her learning about gratitude while podcasting. And whenever she wants to learn more about an emotion, she always goes to Brené Brown and her book, Atlas of the Heart. Brené wrote in that book that the expert on gratitude was Robert Emmons, a professor at UC Davis and one of the leading scholars in positive psychology movement. So she'll dig in and offer you her insights into his book, Thanks! His work on gratitude has been feature in the Washington Post, NY Times, Time, Newsweek, and other mainstream media.   3 Takeaways:   1.   These are the components of gratitude: Something external triggers the feeling; Our brain processes the trigger in a significant way with a physiological response – example being an expressive component like a smile 2.   The research is there – gratitude brings us so many benefits - to our health, social interactions, and wellbeing. Practicing gratitude makes us happier.     3.   We are offered 10 techniques to approaching gratitude which can help us get in touch with the capability to open the door to appreciation for the gifts we are given!   Mentioned in the Episode:   Bonus Episode – Atlas of the Heart: How does the emotion of gratitude relate to leadership   Gratitude Pocket Journals: https://www.pockitudes.com/shop/   Related to the Episode:   38. This is Part 2 of a 2 part series with our guest, Uri Talmor (Gen X) and Kiki Canny returned to join our discussion about Internal Family Systems (IFS) based on the book, No Bad Parts, by Richard Schwartz, PhD. As we noted in Part 1, Kiki had recommended the book and as we read it, we realized it would be great to have an expert on the subject and Uri was that expert. In Part 1, Uri, Kiki and I talked about what IFS was and the elements of the different roles within our parts.  Uri explained why IFS works so well, and the benefits of the method. We sure hope you enjoy the listen as much as you did Part 1! 3 Takeaways:   1.   The “being born good in the world” belief can be looked at best from a Polyvagal Theory perspective. A link is below to learn more. 2.   We are such complex beings and we make judgements of others when we’re trying to control and by staying curious it can help us avoid labeling others. 3.   IFS helps us reorganize our psyche. All three of us totally recommend the book, No Bad Parts. Try the audio to get his voice on the meditations.   Mentioned in the Episode:   No Bad Parts – Book by Richard C Schwartz, PhD   Polyvagal Theory   Related Episode: Part 1 Ep. 115 Inside Out: Unveiling the Layers of Internal Family Systems (IFS) with Uri Talmor   Part 2 Ep. 116 Inside Out: Unveiling the Layers of Internal Family Systems (IFS) with Uri Talmor   More About Uri: Uri graduated from Naropa University's Transpersonal Counseling program and has been teaching there since 2013. A well-loved faculty member, teaching is the highlight of his professional career. His mission and passion are to help make the world a better place for all children. Everything he teaches is connected to this goal, and he is overjoyed for any opportunity to share helpful information that supports child wellness, especially models like IFS that address children's rights on the intra-psychic plane. He co-founded The Healed Healer Institute with his life partner and brilliant Enneagram career coach, Cherie Wilcox. The institute provides training opportunities for healing professionals to master the healing arts through their own healing and personal growth. Uri Talmor (Gen X) joins Kiki (GenZ) and Yo (Boomer) to talk about Internal Family Systems (IFS). Uri has been a psychotherapist since 2004 and has been using Internal Family Systems or IFS since 2003 in his practice. The goal of IFS therapy is to help people identify and accept the different parts of themselves and heal the parts that are wounded. Kiki had recommended the book, No Bad Parts, by Richard Schwartz, PhD, for the podcast and Uri has graciously shared his expertise. This recording was so juicy we had to break it into 2 parts so be sure to listen to both to get all the aspects of this model. One of our goals as a podcast is to help us all know ourselves better so we understand our leadership style and how we can hold ourselves back. This discussion is to help you see some of the aspects of who you are, where those tendencies might come from, and how to embrace and have compassion for ourselves, so we can have it for others. 3 Takeaways:   1.   IFS is a method that brings us a way to see ourselves as a complete Self with no bad parts.  2.   We can embrace our exiles, fire fighter, and manager – acknowledge and validate them. 3.   The Self is characterized by what IFS calls the 8C's: compassion, curiosity, clarity, creativity, calm, confidence, courage, and connectedness. As opposed to many other models, IFS holds that everyone has access to these qualities at their core. Today’s episode is a short Sound Bite episode which builds on our previous 2 episodes about Daniel Pink’s book, The Power of Regret. I first heard Daniel Pink on LinkedIn in a webinar and then got his book – What a title: The Power of Regret, right? And when I saw that Brené Brown had praise of the book on the back cover, I was in, and thought you’d like to hear about it, too. She said in her quote that regret was one of the best and toughest teachers in her life…and that it deepened her connection to herself and to others. And that the idea of “no regrets” doesn’t mean living with courage – it means living without reflection. Let’s explore this emotion together!   3 Takeaways:  1.   We all have regrets – it’s what makes us human. 2.   There are different ways of dealing with regret but perhaps the most powerful one is to see them as an opportunity to think about what the regret is about? What is the lesson in it? 3.   Of the 4 categories of regrets, the most important may be connection – it’s about love. Today’s episode builds on our previous episode about the Arthur Brooks and Oprah Winfrey book: 'Build the Life You Want' – The Art and Science of Getting Happier. The authors brought a ton of information about emotions that we didn’t have time to cover so today’s episode will go deeper into what they have to say. As I read the book, I broke up the emotional self-management sections into 6 steps which can be a path to make us much happier as a person freeing us from being managed by your feelings. Yay!! At the end of the discussion about emotions, Oprah says this: “…today, everything I do, anything I make, any suggestion I float or advice I give – it’s all about the offering. If it works, it works. If it’s accepted, it’s accepted. If not, I have lost nothing because I had no attachment to a particular result.” This she says has made her a much, much happier life and she wishes the same for all of us. Mentioned in the Episode: Arthur Brooks and Oprah's 'Build the Life You Want' https://www.paulekman.com/wp-content/uploads/2013/07/An-Argument-For-Basic-Emotions.pdf Ep. 2, Is Leadership Funny? https://www.karynbuxman.com/stressrecoverytoolkit Ep. 15, Part 1 of 3 – Atlas of the Heart (Brené Brown): How do the emotions, Empathy and Compassion, relate to leadership?   How to reach Yo Canny:    Our website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. So the book by Arthur C Brooks and Oprah Winfrey, Build the Life You Want, The Art and Science of Getting Happier was an instant #1 on the NY Times Bestseller list when it was published Sept of this year. And I knew immediately we had to cover this on our podcast. Plus there’s been so much promotion about it, I wanted to see what the sizzle was all about.   You probably know Oprah and who she is but what about Arthur Brooks? He is a professor at Harvard Kennedy School and professor of management practice at Harvard Business School, where he teaches courses on happiness. What a great class to take and sure wish it was available back in the day. He is also a popular columnist for the Atlantic, acclaimed public speaker and author. So the guy has some chops when it comes to happiness!   3 Episode Takeaways:   1.   Happiness is a not an achievable destination – but we can be happier. 2.   We can’t alter history but we can change our perception of it. 3.   Practicing metacognition can help us better observe our emotions.     Mentioned in the Episode: Arthur Brooks and Oprah's 'Build the Life You Want'   https://ogg.osu.edu/media/documents/MB%20Stream/PANAS.pdf Positive and Negative Affect Schedule (PANAS)   How to reach Yo Canny:    Our website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. In today’s episode Yo builds on Ep 105 where we began our interview with executive and career-life coach, Randi Roberts. Randi Roberts (Boomer), Executive and Career-Life Coach, joins Yo to discuss career fulfillment and enjoyment. They both want everyone to jump out of bed and want to go to work! They discuss reasons to be optimistic about younger generations becoming leaders, obstacles that can get in the way and practices, like gratitude, that can make the road smoother. They also talk about the leadership skills involved in managing change.   3 Takeaways:   1.   The biggest obstacles of enjoying our work can be internal which means we can be the solution and with small shifts we can make a big difference. 2.   Millennials and GenZers seem smarter about asking questions about living with purpose – and finding our purpose can start with asking what our priorities right now where we are in life. 3.   Do the inner work to know what’s working for you or not, so you work on the right problem. Randi offers her Career Satisfaction Assessment tool based on eight pillars she’s found in her work.   Mentioned in Episode: Career Satisfaction Assessment Tool: https://mailchi.mp/cb67b50e5f70/assessment  More About Randi:  helping people love their work as they achieve their career goals the President of Corlin Roberts Coaching, LLC and founder of the Fulfilling Career, Happy Life community. This Sound Bite takes a look at some of the current trends I thought you might find interesting based on some research I found. We also include a clip from our Ep. 19 with Anh Thang Dao-Shah, Ph.D., Executive Director of Belonging and Equity at John Muir Health where she talks about the need for measurement and data.   Mentioned in the Episode: McKinsey article: Diversity, Equity and Inclusion Lighthouses 2023  Related Episodes: Ep. 19, A Model for Diversity, Belonging, Equity, and Justice Leadership!   Ep. 103, Courageous Leadership in DEI: Emotions, Identity, & The Bumpy Road to Change How to reach Yo Canny:  Our website: www.girltaketheleadpod.com  You can send a message or voicemail there. Maria Morukian (Gen X), recognized organizational development practitioner specializing in training, coaching, and facilitation with a focus on diversity, equity, inclusion (DEI), and intercultural competence, joins Yo to discuss trends in DEI, emotions that can be present when leading DEI initiatives, and how “jaggedy” those efforts may appear. They also get into intergenerational expectations and how the societal polarization could be shifting its way back.   Maria is the President of MSM Global Consulting, and an adjunct faculty member at American University’s School of International Service.  She previously served in leadership and organizational development positions at the U.S. Office of Personnel Management’s Federal Executive Institute and the U.S. Department of State. She has also served in leadership positions at Management Concepts and the National MultiCultural Institute. Over the last two decades, Maria has trained and coached thousands of individuals around the world to build practices for better communication, foster competent and respectful workplaces, and navigate conflict for meaningful culture change. She has worked with such diverse clients as PBS Distribution, the National Park Service, National Institutes of Health, the World Bank, and the Association for Animal Welfare Advancement..   3 Takeaways:  1.   There are numerous emotions likely to be present for leaders when implementing DEI initiatives (fear, shame, courage). 2.   We all want to have a balance of belonging and being recognized four our uniqueness. We want to be known for who we are. 3.   There are complex deeply entrenched systems which have been around for a long time. We have to be willing to see the process as “jaggedy” and may not come out right or the way we hope the first time we try DEI initiatives.   Related Episode: Ep 19, A Model for Diversity, Equity, & Inclusion More About Maria:  Maria is a sought-after speaker and has presented at numerous events, including TEDx, the Forum on Workplace Inclusion, the Association for Talent Development, Blacks in Government, and Ellevate Women’s Network. In today’s Sound Bite, Yo continues the discussion started in episode 101 with Dana Rubin, author of the book, Speaking While Female, and creator of the Speaking While Female Speech Bank (SpeakingWhileFemale.co). Her purpose with the speech bank is to broaden our understanding of the role of women orators in history. It’s the world’s largest online archive of women’s speeches from around the world and across time, free for anyone to use. And in today’s episode, we’ll share some excerpts and quotes from a few of those speeches. Dana Rubin, author of the book, Speaking While Female, joins Yo to discuss why it’s been so hard for women to speak in public historically. They also take a look at why speaking in public can be difficult and Dana offers some advice to help overcome the discomfort. Lastly, Dana (Boomer) offers great insights into how younger generations are leading the way when it comes to speaking up with confidence.   3 Takeaways: 1.   Women have been speaking throughout history – for every effort to silence a woman, women did speak back (and that covers every ethnicity and race) – but we just didn’t acknowledge their words, their presence in public. 2.   Public speaking can be difficulty for women even today because of the criticism they can face about how they sound or how they look…but it is changing a bit. 3.   If we don’t speak in public and miss out on the practice and experience to get better.   Mentioned in the Episode: Spanish Coach Resigns  Book: Speaking While Female Website & Speech Bank   Related Episode: Ep. 4, What is Power to Women?
