E63 - Audio vs Video Podcasting - The Podcast Owner's Manual Mini Series Audio vs Video Podcasting - or both? There are a few key differences between audio and video podcasts: Production time: Video podcasts typically take longer to produce than audio podcasts because they involve creating and editing video content in addition to the audio. Equipment: Audio podcasts generally require less equipment than video podcasts. Audio podcasts can often be recorded using just a microphone and a computer, while video podcasts typically require a camera and lighting equipment in addition to audio recording equipment. Distribution: Audio podcasts are typically distributed through podcast directories like Apple Podcasts or Spotify, while video podcasts may also be distributed through platforms like YouTube or Vimeo. Engagement: Some people find it easier to engage with audio podcasts while doing other activities, such as driving or exercising, while video podcasts may require more attention and may be more suitable for watching at home or on a device with a larger screen. Monetization: There are many different ways to monetize podcasts, but video podcasts may have more opportunities for revenue through ads or sponsorships. Overall, the decision to produce an audio or video podcast will depend on your goals and resources. Both types of podcasts have their own unique benefits and can be effective ways to reach an audience. ___ http://howtopodcast.ca/ Podcasting Tips, How To Podcast, Start A Podcast, School, Podcast, Podcaster, Podcast Review --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thehowtopodcastseries/message
Episode 245 - You've Done Hard Things Before, If Someone Believed in You Would You Start Your Podcast? Embarking on the journey of becoming a podcaster, like any new endeavor, is a daunting task. Yet, as the saying goes, "It doesn’t get easier, you get stronger." Through each trial and tribulation, I emerge stronger and more resilient. Though the growth may not always be immediately visible to others, I find solace in knowing that with each hurdle overcome, I am evolving into a better podcaster and a more confident individual. Embrace the Challenge and Start Your Podcast Journey Now that you've learned about the concept of growth through challenge and resilience in the context of podcasting, it's time to take action! Here's a practical step you can take to kickstart your podcasting journey: 1. Identify Your Passion and Unique Voice: Take some time to reflect on what topics you're passionate about and what unique perspective or expertise you can bring to the podcasting world. Whether it's discussing your favorite hobbies, sharing insights from your profession, or exploring niche interests, find what resonates with you. 2. Set Clear Goals and Milestones: Define your podcasting goals, whether it's reaching a certain number of listeners, producing a set number of episodes, or establishing yourself as an authority in your niche. Break down these goals into smaller, achievable milestones to keep yourself motivated and track your progress. 3. Equip Yourself with Knowledge and Resources: Research the technical aspects of podcasting, such as recording equipment, editing software, and hosting platforms. There are plenty of online resources, tutorials, and communities available to help you navigate the technicalities of podcast production. 4. Take the First Step: Don't let fear of the unknown hold you back. Start small by recording a pilot episode or even just outlining your podcast format and content. Remember, it's okay to start imperfectly—every podcaster begins somewhere. 5. Practice Resilience and Perseverance: Understand that challenges and setbacks are inevitable on the podcasting journey. Embrace them as opportunities for growth and learning. When faced with obstacles, draw upon your inner strength and determination to push through. 6. Seek Feedback and Iterate: Once you've launched your podcast, solicit feedback from friends, family, and early listeners. Use their insights to refine your content, improve your delivery, and enhance the overall listening experience. Remember, constructive criticism is invaluable for growth. 7. Celebrate Your Progress: Recognize and celebrate your achievements along the way, no matter how small they may seem. Whether it's reaching a milestone episode, receiving positive reviews, or connecting with listeners, take pride in how far you've come on your podcasting journey. By taking these action steps and embracing the challenges of podcasting, you'll not only grow stronger as a content creator but also enrich the lives of your audience with your unique perspective and insights. So, what are you waiting for? Episode 243 - Moving Your Podcast to a New Podcast Host - 4 things to consider when it is time to move I recently moved my Podcast Editing and Support Show from Spotify for Podcasters to Captivate.fm I fell in love with what Captivate.fm has done to build the podcasting community and I wanted to participate and support the great things that they do there - we we moved our show. When you move your podcast from one hosting site to another site ther are 4 things that I would like you to keep in mind to make the transition go smoothly. (1) Be sure to not kill your current feed too early. Keep your hosting site active during the transition to ensure that your podcast is fully operational before you cancel your past podcast host. (2) During the transition, stop posting your upcoming episodes to your old feed. Give yourself a gap between hosts by not posting upcoming episodes to your former hosting site. (3) Collect all your old feed stats and data from your old host before closing your hosting site down. Grab screen shots, download the "CSV Files" so that you have the history of your podcast including listener stats, episode stats, everything possible. (4) Once you have set up your new hosting site and redirected your RSS Feed to the new home for your podcast, post your newest podcast episode on your new host. When this new episode goes live, use Pod.Link to see if your newest episode sits at the top of the list as a new release - you can also click through the listening apps to see if your new episode, posted to your new hosting site appears. If so, you have been successful. From this point only post new episodes to your new hosting site http://pod.link/ Bonus tip: If you have previously connected your podcast to YouTube via the RSS Ingestion process, watch to see that your newest episode released via your new host also appears on YouTube. Captivate.fm had to do some digging to ensure that this connection was infact still active with the switch. If you don't see your newest episode appearing on YouTube as it did prior to moving your hosting site - reach out to the support team on your new hosting site to look into it for you. If you are looking for a hosting site to start your show or move your show, check out Captivate.fm We are proud affiliates of Captivate.fm, our recommendations are based on our knowledge and experience with them and their services - using this link will earn us a commission at no extra cost to you https://www.captivate.fm/signup?ref=zwmxowy ___ https://howtopodcast.ca/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thehowtopodcastseries/message

Episode 240 - 5 Podcasting Guidelines to Follow, What to Embrace, Enhance & Prioritize NPR's Podcast StartUp Guide Five Rules to podcast by 1 - Be Authentic - If listeners can hear your authenticity, they’ll join in with it. 2 - Prepare - Winging it is not an option, not if you want people to care about what you’re saying. 3 - Leave Room for Discovery - Yes, prepare, but always be open to twists in the road, to reach for insights. 4 - Be Yourself, but better - The version of you on your podcast is a distillation of you. A you that’s sharper. Funnier, probably. Maybe even smarter. Certainly pithier. 5 - Edit - This is the most important rule. It’s a way of focusing your discussion, an opportunity to identify what makes your podcast unique. Do not shirk this. The Book: NPR's Podcast Start Up Guide: Create, Launch, and Grow a Podcast on Any BudgetFrom NPR comes the definitive guide to podcasting - featuring step-by-step advice on how to find a unique topic, tell the best stories, and engage the most listeners, as well as the secrets that will take your pod to the next level.Whoever you are, whatever you love, there’s a podcast audience waiting for you, and in today’s booming audio storytelling landscape, it’s never been easier to share your voice with the world. But while the barrier to entry for podcast production is relatively low (just the cost of a mic and a laptop), the learning curve is steep - and quality matters. That’s where NPR comes in. In NPR’s Podcast Start Up Guide, Glen Weldon draws on NPR’s extensive educational materials and army of talent - from recognizable hosts, such as Guy Raz (How I Built This), Gene Demby (Code Switch), Linda Holmes (Pop Culture Happy Hour), and Yowei Shaw (Invisibilia), to indispensable behind-the-scenes players, such as producers, engineers, and editors - to guide aspiring podcasters through the conception, creation, and launch of a podcast. Part master class, part candid informational interview with the best in the business, this book is a must-have for anyone who wants to make their dream of starting a podcast a reality. Daily Dave Briefing - Podcasting Tips - Should I have Chapters in your Podcast Episode Notes Unlocking the Power of Podcast Chapters: Enhancing the Listener Experience When a podcast incorporates chapters, listeners can see the chapter titles in their podcast player and easily skip to the section they want to hear. This provides a two-fold benefit: listeners can find a starting point that aligns with their unique interests, and they gain a bird's-eye view of the podcast's overall structure. Should You Add Chapters to Your Podcast?Chapters may not be appropriate for all podcast genres, such as storytelling shows like Snap Judgment or The Moth, where the narrative is meant to be experienced from start to finish. However, for informational podcasts like The Huberman Lab or less structured shows like the Joe Rogan Experience, chapters can be a valuable tool to highlight the "key segments" and provide a roadmap for listeners. As a podcaster, you'll have an intuitive understanding of whether chapters would be a good fit for your content. To get a sense of how chapters "feel," try using a podcast player like Fathom, which can read existing chapter markers or even generate them using AI for podcasts that don't have them. Observing how chapters are used in YouTube videos can also provide helpful insights. Streamlining the Chapter Creation Process Adding chapters manually can be a time-consuming task, requiring you to listen back to your podcast and meticulously place markers or type up the chapter titles. Some podcast hosting platforms, like Buzzsprout, offer built-in tools to simplify this process. However, the chapter creation process can be one of the most arduous parts of podcast production, with some producers listening to their episodes multiple times just to identify the necessary elements, such as chapter markers, social media clips, and audio quality checks. Leveraging AI Tools for Effortless Chapter GenerationTo address this challenge, many podcasters are turning to AI tools like Podium, which can automate the chapter creation process. These tools listen to your podcast, transcribe the audio, and then analyze the transcript to identify the appropriate chapter segments. The result is a formatted output that you can easily add to your show notes, allowing platforms like YouTube and Spotify to display the chapter titles. This AI-powered approach can save you hours of manual work, freeing up your time to focus on other aspects of podcast production. While some may be hesitant to rely on AI, the goal is not to replace your role, but rather to provide a solid foundation that you can then refine and perfect. Conclusion Chapters can be a powerful tool for enhancing the listener experience, but creating them can be a time-consuming task. By leveraging AI-driven chapter generation tools, you can streamline the process and devote more attention to the creative and strategic elements of your podcast. Whether you're a solo podcaster or part of a production team, these AI-powered solutions can be a game-changer in your podcast workflow. ___ https://howtopodcast.ca/ --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/thehowtopodcastseries/message
Episode 239 - 3 Questions For A New Podcaster - Why Are You Thinking of Starting A Podcast So, why are you thinking of doing a podcast? Here's an exercise for you to consider Please answer these three questions about your podcast plans: (1) How much time do you have to devote to your podcast? If time is your smallest slice of your pie, maybe you can try publishing shorter epsiodes or less frequent episodes, maybe you can partner with a co-host and share responsibilites and the time requied to create and maintain your podcast (2) How much money do you have to devote to your podcast? If money is your smallest slice of your pie, having a co-host could mean splitting costs, you could use a crowdfunding tool like BuyMeACoffee.com to raise capital funds to run your show - there are ways to make your money slice of your pie bigger! (3) How much passion do you have to do this podcast? Why should you or your listener care about your podcast? Do you love your subject? Doing something that you are by no means passionate about is not sustainable - at all! Identify what your passions are - these are the things that will drive you! If you are not clear on your investment of time, money and passion your audience will pick up on this! Need help developing time, money and passion for your podcast? Episode 238 - How my YouTube Strategy Differs from other creators - How I made YouTube work for me, not the other way around An Audio only podcast does have a home on YouTube despite the constant railings of "gurus" that preach to podcasters that (in their words) "Fake videos do not belong on YouTube" To these "gurus", a fake video is anything that is not a video. What is your YouTube strategy for your podcast? Do you have a strategy? Mine differs from others in this space based on one simple statement - I do not work for YouTube, YouTube works for me! YouTube is great for your podcast as a backup drive, as a legacy for your content, the ease of connection is simple, searchability is strong to be found, accessibility is ever present with closed captioning and transcripts for free and non-video versions of an audio cast will work for many including marathon true crime podcasters - you don't need to make a movie of your episodes - you have a space on YouTube for your audio only content. If you come across anyone in podcasting that tells you that a free platform should never be trusted because free is a bad business plan - then kindly ask them if they have a Facebook account, or Instagram, or LinkedIn or TikTok - those are all free plans and seem to do suprisingly well as a free platform.
