I'm joined today by Eisner nominated comedian, podcaster, and comics writer Jordan Morris on the show today. Jordan has an hilarious new graphic novel coming out called Youth Group with First Second Books. I grew up in the church so reading this was a bit of a release for me having grown up in the Satanic Panic era in the 80s and early 90s. With an obvious analog to Buffy, demon hunting is often portrayed as dark and brooding or requiring tons and tons of magical weaponry and while there are weapons here, it’s less about that and more about the found family we acquire along the way of finding ourselves and solidifying, or not, what we believe in those tough transitional teenage years. It's a lighthearted approach to poking fun at the structures of religion while, in my mind, managing to embrace faith as still a positive and personal thing. I really enjoyed it, after all, who doesn't love to exorcise Smash Mouth. If you are interested in learning more, make sure to visit bit.ly/youthgroupbook or Jordan's website. From the publisher When cynical, gothy Kay lets her mom talk her into joining the youth group at their church, she's prepared for the dorky sing-alongs and the cheesy slogans about dodging temptation. What she isn't prepared for is walking in on the clean-cut youth group leaders, Meg and Cortland, in the middle of a real-deal exorcism. Turns out these wholesome Christian teens are demon-hunting soldiers in a secret war that’s heating up fast, and even if Kay wanted to stay on the sidelines, she doesn’t have a choice – she’s a “Blight,” a human who demons can’t possess, and that makes her a target. But Kay's in good hands with her new friends – for them, fighting literal demons is all in a Sunday’s work! On this episode of Comic Book Yeti's Cryptid Creator Corner we welcome David Hazan back to the podcast. David is here to discuss his newest Mad Cave Studios series Kosher Mafia with issue #1 hitting your LCS on August 7th. The series is written by David with artwork by Sami Kivela, colors by Ellie Wright, and lettered by Simon Bowland.  Kosher Mafia takes place in Cleveland, Ohio, in 1936. It tells the story of Howard Berkowicz, the bookkeeper for the Jewish Mob who finds himself on the wrong end of an enforcer's gun when he tries to spur the Kosher Mafia into action against the rising tide of domestic Nazism in the German American Bund.  David and I talk about his research into this time period for Kosher Mafia, Sami Kivela's incredible artwork, wrapping up Nottingham, and making unsafe choices, creatively speaking.  Our episode sponsors After the Realm Don't miss Eisner and Harvey award winning comics creator Michael Avon Oeming's newest crowdfunding project After The Realm. The wait is over, it's been a long time coming but I have returning guests Eric Grissom and Will Perkins back on the show with me today to talk about the next volume of their middle grade fantasy series Goblin: The Wolf and the Well from Dark Horse Comics. Goblin was my nominee way back when for Exceptional Kids Comic or Graphic Novel on our first annual Comic Book Yeti Ice (Indy Comics Excellence) Awards show and I was wondering how the duo would craft a follow up to what is one of my favorite fantasy comics ever, turns out, smashed it. The second installment finds our young goblin friend Rikt out of the wilds and in school alongside his trusty wolf companion Fishbreath. This is one you don't want to miss no matter how old you are. Get all the latest at realmofgoblin.com. From the publisher What would you sacrifice to protect the one you love? One dark and stormy night, Rikt meets a mysterious fortune teller in the woods. When she foresees his best friend, a wolf named Fish-breath, in mortal danger, he is overcome with a fear of losing her. When an opportunity to protect her presents itself, Rikt trades the freedom of the wild for the protection of Underwood—an orphanage for monster children and a sanctuary for wolves. Was his bargain worth the price? And what fate awaits the children who live there? Uncover the mystery in the thrilling sequel to Goblin.  Our episode sponsors After the Realm Don't miss Eisner and Harvey award winning comics creator Michael Avon Oeming's newest crowdfunding project After The Realm. I'm stoked about today's episode because we're going to talk about the transection of two big storytelling mediums in my life, comics and wrestling. In what seems like a former life, I was a production assistant for WCW and nobody was more colorful and with so much mythology surrounding them as the luchadores. So, it is with great pleasure that I welcome Diego Valenzuela on with me. Diego is the Head of Storyworlds for Masked Republic Comics who has an amazing new project dropping soon called Luchaverse: Catalyst that is being released in partnership with relative newcomer on the block Massive Publishing. This unique project incorporates some of the biggest named luchadores into the fabric of the comic, weaving their legend into something entirely new. Each event issue will be a double oversized 48-page feature with the first issue dropping mid-July and features stories with Rey Mysterio and Tinieblas Jr. I'm really looking forward to where this universe develops and it's a treat to get to hear more about Masked Republic and what they are doing with Luchadores representation and where their comics arm is headed. You can order copies directly from Massive Publishing From the publisher It all starts here with the three-part launch of the epic new shared Luchaverse! The world's most famous luchadores battle in the ring by day, and serve humanity as monster hunters and world protectors by night. In this series, Masked Republic Comics and Massive Publishing bring back the glory and tradition of real-life lucha libre stars in comic books, setting the stage for a new era filled with epic cross-genre action in a shared universe.  The first installment of the Luchaverse series is an action-packed double feature that is a perfect entry point for both long time fans of luchadores and new readers looking for genre bending adventure and universe altering mystery. First, Rey Mysterio, the world's most recognizable luchador discovers his legacy outside of the ring as the next in line to take on a great evil prophesied to return and plunge the world into darkness… Next, as heir to his own legacy as lead luchador monster hunter, Tinieblas Jr. takes on the legions of the damned and all manner of creatures that go bump in the night while trying to prevent ancient forces of the monster realm from conquering the universe! "Flash. A-ah. Saviour of the Universe." I remember the first time I saw the movie Flash Gordon. I had already seen Star Wars and Star Trek, but this seemed even stranger, bolder. And that Queen soundtrack! I was in love. Now, Mad Cave Studios are introducing Flash Gordon to a new comic book audience with the all-star team of Jeremy Adams and Will Conrad. Issue #1 hits your LCS on July 24th and I just had to sit down with both Jeremy and Will to hear all about it. We talk about the difficult task of making something that will appeal to both old and new fans and what sets Flash Gordon apart from other pulp sci-fi heroes. It's also great to hear Jeremy and Will sing the praises of their fellow collaborators colorist Lee Loughridge and letterer Taylor Esposito. I've been a fan of Jeremy's writing for some time now and was excited to tell him I loved the Scoobynatural episode of Supernatural. Do not miss this episode! "Flash, Flash, I love you. But we only have 14 hours to save the Earth. Flash."   From the publisher Flash awakes on a secret prison planet somewhere in the galaxy. Upon learning that Dale Arden is the subject of an assassination plot, he’s forced to break out and make his way across the galaxy to save her. Along the way, he encounters old friends, new threats, and a greater mystery surrounding WHO is pulling the strings of this universe. The first exciting issue in an all-new ongoing series! I think these 2 creators may be the first siblings we've had on the podcast, but more than that, they lived in DELCO for a time! I couldn't be happier to chat with Maria Hoey and Peter Hoey about In Perpetuity, their most recent graphic novel published by Top Shelf Productions. In Perpetuity is a retelling of the Orpheus myth set in a timeless Los Angeles with very strong classic noir vibes. I absolutely loved this (and not just because the main character is named Jim, I swear). This was such a fun chat, I loved learning about their approach to comics and art, and hearing about their influences. After listening, be sure to check out their website and more great comics at Coin-Op Books. In Perpetuity is out now, it's a great twist on this story, and absolutely gorgeous linework and colors.   From the publisher In perpetuity, the Afterlife is just as the ancient Greeks imagined: an endless twilight where time stands still and shades have nowhere to go. For Jim, that means long shifts at a gas station, with only crossword puzzles and cigarettes to break the tedium. One day, two criminal shades from Jim’s past show up at the gas station and his existence takes a dangerous turn. They’ve tracked him down for something he didn’t know he had: the ability to cross back into the living world. It’s a rare gift, and they intend to exploit it. Just as Jim crosses back into sunny California, he meets Olivia dying on an Echo Park sidewalk… pulling her back from the edge of death and striking a connection that will run deeper than either can imagine. Jim weaves back and forth between the Afterlife and Los Angeles, but the more he tries to distance himself and Olivia from the criminals’ plot, the deeper they're pulled in. What follows is a web of deceit and murder that reaches across A.L. and L.A., and ultimately to Hades himself. With a heady blend of film noir and Greek mythology, In Perpetuity reveals both the human capacity for self-deception and the endurance of love. The Cryptid Creator Corner is starting a run of 2 guest episodes and we're starting with Andrew Leamon and Xander Arnot chatting about the current Kickstarter campaign for Camera Man #1. Camera Man "brings the fun, action-packed energy of a Saturday Morning Cartoon (think Spectacular Spider-Man, Batman Beyond or Ben 10) with a colorful cast of characters and some filmmaking magic sprinkled on top in a way only comics can make possible." We chat about how the two of them worked together on this project, what is was like for Andrew to come in as a writer for someone else's passion project, and how Xander built his YouTube following. This is also the slickest comic book trailer I think I've ever seen. Check this episode out now and be sure to back Camera Man before the campaign ends on July 18th.   Our episode sponsors After the Realm Don't miss Eisner and Harvey award winning comics creator Michael Avon Oeming's newest crowdfunding project After The Realm. Soo Lee talks Cheetara

Soo Lee talks Cheetara

2024-07-0253:49

Building on the success of the new Thundercats series, Dynamite Comics has another brand new number one that I think is sure to be another hit: Cheetara. Writer Soo Lee is here on the Cryptid Creator Corner to tell us all about it. Issue #1 will be at your LCS on Wednesday, July 3rd. This story takes place before the destruction of Thundera and Soo Lee talks about the freedom to create a rich backstory for Cheetara. Soo also discusses working with artist Domenico Carbone and what she's learned as an artist working with different writers and how that has impacted how she writes a script. I also sneak in a few questions about the excellent Carmilla: The First Vampire, written by Amy Chu with art by Soo Lee. It's absolutely incredible and the follow-up Carmilla: The Last Vampire Hunter is out July 10th. This was a fun conversation and I enjoyed getting to know more about artist and writer Soo Lee.   From the publisher As Cheetara becomes more conscious of her hidden powers, she is also increasingly troubled by apocalyptic visions of the future. Goaded on by these haunting dreams, she ramps up her training of the young Lion-O to prepare him for the trials ahead - but pushing the young prince so hard may wind up doing more harm than good! The acclaimed creative team of writer SOO LEE and artist DOMENICO CARBONE continue to unveil the secrets that lie at the heart of Thundera and the saga of the ThunderCats in ThunderCats: Cheetara #3 - commemorated with classic covers from LEE, LESLEY "LEIRIX" LI, REBECA PUEBLA, and EDWIN GALMON! To finish up my Pride Month coverage on the show I'm delighted to welcome back one of my favorite show veterans, the Fantastic Steve Foxe. Steve has been super busy, recent project drops include Dead X-Men, Dark X-Men, X-Men 97, and Spider-Woman and he's got a slate of more Marvel books coming out. Short term that includes the four issue X-Men: Heir of Apocalypse with artist Netho Diaz and the Psylocke: Blood Hunt one shot with artist Lynne Yoshii. Plus, he's got a new Editor gig with James Tynion's Tiny Onion production house. We get into all of that in today's episode and work in some time to talk about the legacy of the Krakoan Era, how big of an impact comics can have on queer representation, the big ol' slate of Spider books he's writing coming out later in 2024 (with maybe even a little slip on what's to come), why he hasn't had time to yet watch the new X-Men cartoon, and what his favorite film is this month (spoiler, The Crow) where I sadly butcher Bruce Lee's history. Make sure to sign up for Steve's newsletter to stay up to date with all the latest. From the publisher X-Men: Blood Hunt - Psylocke Ninja vs. vampires! After serving on the frontlines in the war against Orchis, Kwannon is enjoying some much-deserved downtime with her new lover Greycrow. But when darkness falls across Japan, Psylocke will wield her psionic blade against blood-sucking creatures of legend and faces a foe unlike any she’s ever seen. An all-new villain emerges in the mayhem of BLOOD HUNT! From the publisher Heir of Apocalypse For centuries, Apocalypse tested the mutants of Earth to guarantee that only the strong would survive. Now, as he takes his throne on Arakko, another must rise in his place and ensure the mutants of Earth do not grow weak in his absence! Twelve mutants chosen from the X-Men's greatest heroes—and villains—will compete for the honor, but only one can become... the HEIR OF APOCALYPSE! Continuing our Pride Month coverage on the show, I'm joined today by Sam Maggs. Sam is a New York Times Bestselling Author who doesn't call just the comics space home. She's written in various mediums including books, video games, and comics spaces and is currently turning her attention to launching The Wicked Trinity, a dark fantasy One Shot from Archie Comics with line art from Lisa Sterle, colors by Ellie Wright, and letters by Jack Morelli. We get a little into the recent Eisner nomination announcement for her short story Friendship is Forever in the My Little Pony 40th Celebration and carve out some time to talk about representation for woman and queer spaces in our entertainment mediums. From the publisher Sabrina’s magical nemesis Amber Nightstone and her sidekicks, Jade Kazane and Sapphire Gill, are intent on becoming the most powerful witches in the world. Isolated from so many around them, the three have formed a coven based on their individual needs for vengeance and true freedom. But when there is some dissent among the ranks, their small coven is threatened to be obliterated from within Link to the refereneced CBR article "Comics Are Still Failing Their Female Characters and Creators" Our episode sponsors: Transphoria Kickstarter Make sure to check out the Kickstarter campaign for Transphoria, a new new 90 page graphic novel that collects 19 new short storeis about trans and non-binary experiences of gender euphoria. Mad Cave Studios is bringing back Gatchaman in comic book form and we have a very special double episode to let you know all about it. Science Ninja Team Gatchaman was a Japanese animated series that debuted in 1972. In the States, if you were around for the late 70s/early 80s, the episodes were edited and dubbed for an American audience and called Battle of the Planets. The series has taken on many different forms and incarnations over the years, but Mad Cave has brought on artist Chris Batista and writer Cullen Bunn along with colorist Carlos Lopez and letterer Buddy Beaudoin to once again breathe life into this epic franchise for old and new fans alike. I was able to chat with Chris and Cullen all about Gatchaman, bue to a scheduling error that may or may not have been my fault, who's to say, I had to record these episodes separately. Lucky you though, dear listener, because you get 2 episodes for the price of 1! Check out these 2 really fun interviews and head to your LCS to pick up your copy of Gatchaman #1 in stores June 26th. Greg Pak talks Lawful

Greg Pak talks Lawful

2024-06-1259:06

This is a very special episode for a number of reasons. I'm a huge Greg Pak fan so it was wonderful to finally have him on the podcast, but my brother Bobby, the Cryptid Creator Corner's number one most dedicated fan, is a Greg Pak superfan and I start the episode by reading Greg a message from Bobby. Greg and I then get into discussing his new series from Boom Studios LAWFUL out June 12th. LAWFUL is about a world where every time you break the law, your physical appearance is slowly changed into something monstrous. The story centers on two friends: Sung and Eris. Greg and I really dig into this story to discuss its themes and implications. Greg also gets to gush about working with his collaborators Diego Galindo, Irma Kniivila, and Simon Bowland. We chat about world-building, anxiety, and doing bad things to good characters.   We also get to chat about the Dynamite series LILO & STITCH. Issue #4 just dropped on June 5th. Greg is working with artist Giulia Giacomino. The series has been stellar so far, capturing well the voice & tone of both main characters. We chat a bit about how this opportunity came about and why Greg was excited to write this series. It's a really lovely conversation you do not want to miss.  Our episode sponsors: Transphoria Kickstarter Make sure to check out the Kickstarter campaign for Transphoria, a new new 90 page graphic novel that collects 19 new short storeis about trans and non-binary experiences of gender euphoria. Michael Avon Oeming returns to the podcast and he'a brought Taki Soma with him! Michael and Taki are here to chat about Mad Cave Studios' GALAXY OF MADNESS arriving at your LCS on June 19th.  Written by Magdalene Vissaggio, GALAXY OF MADNESS is a retro-futuristic sci-fi adventure about a "swashbuckling space archeologist". It reads like a love letter to silver age comics for a modern audience. Michael's artwork is stunning, capturing the feel of the silver age but it's Taki's colors that blast this book into another universe. We chat about the development of this project, working with Mad Cave, how they work together and if it differs from working with other collaborators, and so much more!   From the publisher: In the far-flung thrilling future of the 41st Century, and on the other side of the galaxy, a swashbuckling space archaeologist, Vigil Virgo, is on the cusp of learning a universe-shattering secret in this four-color fantasy! But she’ll have to dive into the abyss, where no human was ever meant to go, to do it. The question is what happens when she emerges from the other side.when she emerges from the other side. We are kicking off my second year of Pride Month Specific coverage in the month of June with a new guest on the show today, Theo Parish. Theo is a UK based nonbinary illustrator and author with an amazing new autobiographical graphic novel called Homebody from Harper Alley. Homebody is a compelling depiction of Theo's own experience of self discovery as a nonbinary person using an honest and heartfelt storytelling approach. It's out in stores now so make sure to pick yourself up a copy. From the publisher In their comics debut, Theo Parish masterfully weaves an intimate and defiantly hopeful memoir about the journey one nonbinary person takes to find a home within themself. Combining traditional comics with organic journal-like interludes, Theo takes us through their experiences with the hundred arbitrary and unspoken gender binary rules of high school, from harrowing haircuts and finally the right haircut to the intersection of gender identity and sexuality—and through tiny everyday moments that all led up to Theo finding the term “nonbinary,” which finally struck a chord.  A whole spectrum of people will be drawn to Theo’s storytelling, from trans or questioning teens and adults, to folks who devoured Gender Queer by Maia Kobabe or The Fire Never Goes Out by ND Stevenson, to any person looking to dive a little deeper into the way gender can shape identity. Throughout the book, Theo’s crystal-clear voice reminds the reader that it’s okay not to know, it’s okay to change your mind, and it’s okay to take your time finding your way home. It's a jam-packed week of excellent guests on the Cryptid Creator Corner and today I chat with a creator known for Better Place, TerraQuill, Bridgebuilder's Creed, Samurai Grandpa, ILLÜMON, and Lost Souls #1: The Trials of Casci Capricor: it's SHAWN DALEY. Shawn is a cartoonist from Toronto who was recently named Sequential Magazine Awards Favourite Colourist of 2023. We talk about the comic creators and cartoonists that have impacted Shawn's style the most and how readers' reactions to the work he's done has impacted him. Shawn also talks specifically about his indie comics experience and advice for anyone starting out making their own comics. Be sure to check out all of Shawn's work, especially comics he's created with Eastin DeVerna (they're some of my favorites) and help defeat the algorithm by signing up for Shawn's newsletter here: https://substack.com/@shawndaley Our episode sponsors Transphoria Kickstarter Make sure to check out the Kickstarter campaign for Transphoria, a new new 90 page graphic novel that collects 19 new short storeis about trans and non-binary experiences of gender euphoria. I adored Wolfpitch and was delighted to get to chat with Balazs Lorinczi about it. Wolfpitch is Balazs' follow-up to the GLAAD Media Award nominated Doughnuts and Doom. Balazs was born in Hungary and now lives in Scotland and I was fascinated to learn about his journey in comics as well as why he loves to combine the supernatural and music. Wolfpitch is published by Top Shelf Productions an imprint of IDW publishing. You can find it at your local comic shop on June 12th. I'm always interested in learning how creators got to where they are today and what has influenced them to make the comics they do. I found Balazs to be open and friendly and funny and I can't wait to read more of his comics.   Here is a synopsis of Wolfpitch: All's fair in love and music when this supernatural all-girl rock band must beat the odds and become the best band in town! Izzy's a bass-playing werewolf. Geraldine's the ghost of an amazing jazz pianist. Delilah's the meanest drummer in town. They'd be the perfect trio to win the Battle of Bands... except Geraldine can't play a solo since she passed away, and Izzy and Delilah are at each other's throats at every opportunity. Can they work through their problems to win the competition, or will they be defeated by Delilah's ex-band and their villainous frontman, Dylan? Sparks will fly, milkshakes will melt, and ears will ring in the latest delicious LGBTQ romp from graphic novelist Balazs Lorinczi.  Our episode sponsors Transphoria Kickstarter Make sure to check out the Kickstarter campaign for Transphoria, a new new 90 page graphic novel that collects 19 new short storeis about trans and non-binary experiences of gender euphoria. Today I’m joined by a newcomer to our show, Dan Watters. Dan’s portfolio includes writing credits for Home Sick Pilots, Loki, Lucifer, a personal favorite of mine The Seasons Have Teeth, Six Fingers, and the recently released Creature from the Black Lagoon among others, and now he’s turned his attention helping Skybound launch the Energon Universe mashing up the world of the classic GI Joe and Transformers franchises with the Destro mini-series which along with Scarlett kicks off the next phase of their book releases. I got a chance to read an advance copy of Destro and, no surprise, it's a fantastic addition to the Energon Universe Skybound is creating. I think the true credit on this book and the others in that universe is how well they can stand alone without the need of their brethren to carry them. It makes it easy to jump in for new readers and feedback is fantastic from the shops I've talked to. They are excited that it's bringing new, younger faces in the store which is no small feat when relaunching older IPs. From the publisher: Acclaimed writer Dan Watters (Loki, Universal Monsters: Creature from the Black Lagoon Lives!) and artist Andrei Bressan (Dark Ride, Birthright) change the balance of power in the Energon Universe forever in Destro #1, launching June 19, 2024. James McCullen Destro XXIV is the man behind M.A.R.S. Industries, the undisputed leader in providing high-tech weapons to world powers…for the right price. But the emergence of Energon has changed everything. As Destro’s ambitions grow, the “Crimson Twins” Tomax and Xamot Paoli emerge to destroy their competition, and Cobra Commander realizes his current ally could be his future greatest enemy. We're talking about Old Dog and ThunderCats today on the Cryptid Creator Corner as I welcome Declan Shalvey to the podcast. I was lucky enough this past March to celebrate my 45th birthday in Ireland and as part of the celebration go to Dublin Comic Con and meet Declan. I knew once I was back home I had to get Declan on the podcast to chat about comics. We discuss his early days in comics, Dublin Comic Con, plus some of his work like Savage Town, Bog Bodies, Time Before Time, Old Dog, and ThunderCats. It was great hearing about Declan's approach to storytelling, both writing and art. I could have chatted with Declan for another 2 hours, but Penny came upstairs while recording to tell me the laundry room "smells like burning" and I had to wrap things up to investigate. Be sure to check out Declan's website and sign up for his very excellent newsletter. I've been very lucky recently to chat with some of my favorite creators working in comics right now and I think you're going to enjoy listening to this episode as much as I enjoyed recording it.  Thundercats from the publisher: Fleeing through space to escape their dying home world, the ThunderCats were attacked en route by their mortal enemies, the Mutants of Plun-Darr. After diverting their damaged flagship to a planet called Third Earth, the surviving ThunderCats now strive to rebuild their society in harmony with the new world's natives. But the Mutants, determined to possess the ThunderCats' mystical gem, the Eye of Thundera, have tracked them down - and they've also forged an alliance with Mumm-Ra, the devil-priest of Third Earth! Now the ThunderCats, led by an inexperienced Lion-O, must band together as never before to protect their legacy from this combined enemy. But will they be able to withstand the onslaught of Mumm-Ra the Ever-Living, once he sets his eyes upon them? The triple-threat talents (writers, artists, and ThunderCats superfans) of DECLAN SHALVEY and DREW MOSS join forces to bring this exciting new entry in the ThunderCats canon to life!  Old Dog from the publisher: Jack Lynch was a once-promising CIA operative. On the eve of retirement, looking back at a failed career, he is tasked with one final mission...that goes horribly wrong. He wakes years later to a changed world and deeper changes within him. When a shadow group offers Lynch a second chance at a life of adventure, he's paired with the last person he could ever imagine. In order to adjust, this old dog will have to learn some new tricks... OLD DOG is a striking new spy-fi series by DECLAN SHALVEY, the accomplished and innovative creator behind books such as Moon Knight, X-Men Unlimited, INJECTION, and TIME BEFORE TIME.
