In this episode of Beyond the Torch, host Leslie Nease is joined by guest co-host Scott Ransom (a fan contest winner) to interview Vecepia Robinson, the winner of Survivor: Marquesas and the first African American woman to ever win the show! Vecepia shares the remarkable story of how she applied to Survivor after praying for an opportunity and mailing in a memorable audition tape of herself jumping out of a tree, and recounts how she was nearly overlooked at final auditions before boldly making her way onto the cast. She discusses her deep Christian faith — including a spiritual encounter with a friend in the Air Force, her path to giving her life to God, and how she reconciled playing a "non-Christian game" with her beliefs while on the island — as well as her clever use of a poetry book as a luxury item to secretly study and remember her tribemates for challenges. Today, Todd & Leslie (both from Survivor: China) welcome Cindy Hall from Survivor: Guatemala for an insightful conversation about her Survivor experience and her remarkable life since the show. Cindy shares stories about returning to Guatemala twice after filming, her tenacious nine-application journey to get cast, behind-the-scenes conflicts with tribemate Gary Hogeboom that didn't make the edit, and the paranoia of the pre-show secrecy process. She then traces her post-Survivor path from traveling across the country, working at the San Diego Zoo for a season and then finding her way back to Florida. Cindy chats about her groundbreaking work in zoo animal care — developing a hoof-care certification program for zoo professionals and pioneering a hormone-suppression protocol that allows male giraffes to live together without castration, work that has consulted zoos worldwide. Throughout, Cindy reflects on how Survivor instilled a resilience she draws on whenever life gets hard!
