Run the Dishwasher Twice - Episode 73 - Advice from Ralph Waldo Emerson with host, Debbie Lannen. "To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to have succeeded." Wise words, but how do we make sure that happens. I think by focusing on our small successes. Take each day one at a time and strive for making it better in some small way for ourselves and those around us. Small successes can and will add up and make a difference! Welcome to Run the Dishwasher Twice. Thoughts to help you have a more positive outlook. My name is Debbie Lannen and I will be your host. Now just a reminder. I'm not a therapist or a counselor. I'm just like you trying to be happy in this crazy world we live in. Today I want to share with you a writing from Ralph Waldo Emerson. I don't know how many of you have actually read his works but I came across this part of one of his writings and I thought it was quite interesting and a good motivation for today. So, let me share that with you. To laugh often and much. To win the respect of intelligent people and the affection of children. To earn the appreciation of honest critics and endure the betrayal of false friends. To appreciate beauty. To find the best in others. To leave the world a bit better whether by a healthy child, a garden path, or a redeemed social condition. To know even one life has breathed easier because you have lived. This is to succeed.  I love that writing because what it does is it points out that even the smallest of a thing can be important to someone and make a difference in someone's life. That's the important thing. It can make a difference in our own lives. It doesn't matter how big this thing is, and I think that's what Mr Emerson was trying to point out. He says, "Whether you leave a healthy child or a garden path" and those are two very different things. They will have an impact on someone during their life. For example, you're standing by a sliding glass door leading out to a backyard. Now it's a big window and you're looking out and you can see the vast expanse of the land outside. NoW think about standing in perhaps a bathroom window. It's a much smaller window but you still have a way to look outside. We don't always have to be looking through the door wall, massive windows, we can narrow it down and look into smaller visions. When we're growing up many times people will come up to you and say what do you want to be when you grow up? How do you know what you want to be when you grow up? Focusing on smaller things can make us happier and it helps us to move on to larger things in our life. I think that's kind of what Mr Emerson was saying Today we don't need to always look at the big picture, sometimes we get lost doing that. So what we want to do is look at the little things in our life as successes. We all want to feel like we are a success but sometimes if you're looking at that big picture it can make us feel like a failure. Looking at smaller things is much easier because you haven't quite got to that ultimate summit you're pushing to get to. So instead of thinking how can I get to the top of that hill, think how can I get to that small ledge which will then lead me to another small ledge. I guess my point today is let's look at things in a little different way and celebrate the small successes we have in our life. So that's it for today just five minutes to hopefully help you feel a little bit better about your life and the lives of people around you. Thank you all for listening. Run the Dishwasher Twice - Episode 72 - Keeping Perspective with your host, Debbie Lannen. One of the hardest things to do in life is keep things in perspective. Something goes wrong. It seems like the world is spiraling out of control. What we need to remember is that not everything that happens to us is earth shattering. We will ge through things if we step back and put things in perspective. Not easy, but defintely helps! So take a breath. Consider how this event will effect you and the people you love and then move on.  #perspective #selfcare #motivation  --- Send in a voice message: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/runthedishwashertwice/message Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/runthedishwashertwice/support
Run the Dishwasher Twice - Episode 71 - Dr. Seuss Advice with your host, Debbie Lannen. Bad things happen and Dr. Seuss thinks we have 3 choices. Will you make the right one for you? And what about if something good happens? We have 3 choices there as well. Will we make the right choice? Good and bad things will happen to us every day. It is important to make the right choice.  #choices #drseuss #selfcare #motivation Transcript: Hi everyone and welcome to Run the Dishwasher Twice, thoughts to help you have a more positive outlook. My name is Debbie Lannen and I will be your host. Now just reminder. I'm not a counselor or a therapist. I'm just like you trying to be happy in this crazy world we live in. Today I would like to bring up a book that I saw written by  Dr. Seuss. Now how many of us grew up reading all of the Dr. Seuss books? I know I did and I loved them and then when my son was born we read them to him and on and on. So anyway, I saw this quote today and I thought I would share it with you. It says, "When something bad happens you have three choices. You can either let it define you, let it destroy you, or you can let it strengthen you." Now of course all of us would want to choose to strengthen ourselves when something bad happens. Now on the other hand what if something good happens? Well I came up with three things if something good happens to you. You do have choices. Again you can enjoy it, you can ignore it, or you can share it! You have to think about what caused that bad thing to happen to you. Maybe something you ignored or was it something that you forgot to do. So if you figure out what caused it, you can keep it from happening again and that's where you get your strength. It isn't that you could go back and change what happened, it's that you now have the strength to not let that bad thing happen to you again. You change how you react to it. The same thing if a good thing happens. If someday you just have all kinds of good luck, sit down and think. Why was it? Maybe the way I reacted to the people around me and so that gave me a better feeling and then people were more positive towards me. So, good things and bad things are always going to happen to us. I think the important thing  is to focus on strengthening ourselves and looking for the positive and that will help us have a happier life. So that's my thought for today. Just a few minutes to bring you an idea maybe you hadn't thought about, so again thank you for listening and I hope you will continue to follow Run the Dishwasher Twice. Run the Dishwasher Twice - Episode 70 - Make a Change with your host, Debbie Lannen. Life got you down. Things are bothering you and you can't seem to shake that mood? Make a change. Doesn't need to be a big change, Just something different to change how you are feeling. A new haircut? A different pair of shoes? Sit in a different chair? Any small change can help get you back on a path to a happier day! Give it a try! Why not! #change #mood #motivation #selfcare Transcript: Hi Everyone and welcome to Run the Dishwasher Twice, thoughts to help you feel more postive. My name is Debbie Lannen and I will be your host. Now just a reminder. I'm not a therapist or a counselor. I'm just like you trying to be happy in this crazy world we live in. Now today the topic I wanna talk about is making a change. Now it doesn't have to be a huge change. If you've been watching and listening to my podcast this is episode #70 and during the course of 1 to 70 you may have seen some changes in me, like my hair got a little bit longer and today it's a whole lot shorter. So that's what I'm talking about. Sometimes in our life we just need to make some kind of a change. You have, like a bad day. You can't shake it off and you think nothing's gonna make it any better and then you know what I think? I'm just gonna make a little bit of a change and see if it helps. So that's what I did. I had kind of a rough day yesterday and I was looking at my hair, which had been growing since the pandemic began and I thought, you know what! It's time to make the move. Now for those of you who've known me for many years my hair has gone from waist length to Liza Minelli short, back to shoulder length. It's all different types but during the pandemic, of course, I did not go out and get my hair cut so it's been growing for about 2 1/2 years. So I just decided it's time for that change. Let me see if it makes me feel a little bit better, and you know what? It does! You just have something a little different in your life. So that's what I mean by making a change. I don't mean you have to jump to a new career or you have to put the house up for sale and move to another city because things aren't going right. Sometime what about putting on a different pair of shoes. Different shoes make you walk a little different. You feel a little different. Sometimes the littlest change can help. Say you always wear the same shoes. They sit by the door. You throw them on and out the door you go. What about putting on a different pair of shoes. A different pair of shoes makes you walk a little bit different and when you walk a little different you feel a little different. Now I'm not saying put on uncomfortable shoes. I'm talking about put on a pair of shoes that are still comfortable, maybe with, you know a different color. So that's the type of changes I'm talking about today. If you always put on a dress, why not wear a pair of pants once in awhile. Or if you're one of the men that happens to listen to this podcast, if you always wear dark colors what the heck, throw something on that's bright! See what happens! It might just change your mood and it might change the people around you because they'll really notice. Hey what's going on? But that's my point. Just make little changes because little changes can add up and become big changes and a big change might be just what you need in this lifetime. So that's my thought for today. Just five minutes to help you, hopefully feel a little bit better about your life. So if things are getting you down, just take the time and make a little change. I hope you have a great week!
