Description

Flash Forward is a show about possible (and not so possible) future scenarios. What would the warranty on a sex robot look like? How would diplomacy work if we couldn’t lie? Could there ever be a fecal transplant black market? (Complicated, it wouldn’t, and yes, respectively, in case you’re curious.) Hosted and produced by award winning science journalist Rose Eveleth, each episode combines audio drama and journalism to go deep on potential tomorrows, and uncovers what those futures might really be like. The future is going to be weird, so let's get ready for it together.

If we really want to combat climate change, why not institute a serious cap on human population? It's a common question, and on today's episode we talk about a future in which there is a global one-child policy put in place, and why that might not actually be a very good, or just, idea. Guests: Dr. Jade Sasser — Associate professor of gender and sexuality studies at UC Riverside, author of On Infertile Ground, Population Control and Women’s Rights in the Era of Climate Change. Dr. Leslie Wang — Assistant professor of sociology at UMass Boston and author of Outsourced Children: Orphanage Care and Adoption in Globalizing China Meehan Crist — Writer-in-residence in Biological Sciences at Columbia University. → → → Further reading & resources here! ← ← ←  〰️〰️〰️ For more about FLASH FORWARD PRESENTS head this way. 〰️〰️〰️ Flash Forward is produced by me, Rose Eveleth. Today is a very special ~~surprise~~ episode! I’ve been thinking about how to revisit old episodes, and give you folks updates on things that have happened since we covered certain futures. Sometimes things warrant more than a social media post, but not quite a whole new episode. So here’s a little experiment! On this episode, we revisit three futures and you get some juicy, fresh updates. We talk about a mosquito experiment gone wrong, a UBI experiment gone right, and what the heck is going on with coronavirus.  If you like this, let me know? There are a few other episodes I think are worth an update (The census is this year! A DNA testing company we covered was bought out by a lab that works with law enforcement! People in Sweden are flying way less!) and if you like this I’ll definitely do another.  Sources: Dr. Cameron Webb — mosquito expert, University of Sydney Dr. Amy Castro Baker — assistant professor at University of Pennsylvania Dr. Stacia Martin-West — assistant professor at University of Tennessee, Knoxville Alexandra Phelan — Center for Global Health Science and Security, Georgetown University → → → Further reading on today’s episode can be found here ← ← ← Flash Forward is produced by me, Rose Eveleth. Awesome job Roseai!! I'm really enjoying this mini season format where you follow thread awhile :) Ferrock sounds like a fantastic idea! The flexural strength and durability should have widespread applicability in flatwork (non-structural slabs). I'm curious about what the limit to scaling up is??

Nothing wrong with sharing fake texts about a fake future. It's all conjecture and doesn't mean you have to believe it or buy into it. But, you know, under the right circumstances, many outcomes are possible. Not probable, but possible.

Fantastic show! The intros can be a bit odd when you first get into the series, but they definitely add a nice touch. The expert interviews are great! Continue the great work Rose!
