Ever wonder about the Red no. 40 in those fruit snacks? Or the Blue no. 1 in your mouthwash? These are a few of the 7 certified food colors (“FD&C colors”; FD&C = Food, Drugs & Cosmetics) approved for widespread use in the U.S.
These dyes, made from carcinogenic ingredients, are added to many processed foods, candies, beverages, over-the-counter medications, and vitamins in the US, especially those intended for children. But since the US Food and Drug Administration (US FDA) initially approved the food dyes between 1969 and 1987, (when few studies of children were available) clinical trials using synthetic dyes have examined neurobehavioral outcomes in children, and laboratory studies of neurotoxic effects in developing animals have become available. Food dyes have been anecdotally and scientifically shown to negatively affect behavior, especially in children, the effects of which is most profound in children with Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and other behavioral issues, increasing hyperactivity, impulsiveness, and inattention. Animal studies indicate effects of exposure to synthetic food dyes on activity, memory and learning, changes in neurotransmitter systems in the brain, and microscopic changes in brain structure.
Learn more about the harmful effects of artificial dyes and colors in this episode of the Renegade Nutrition podcast, and find out what you can do to keep yourself and your family safe!
Here is the complete list of artificial dyes approved for use in the US:
brilliant blue (Blue No. 1b)
indigotine (Blue No. 2)
fast green (Green No. 3)
tartrazine (Yellow No. 5b)
sunset yellow (Yellow No. 6b)
erythrosine (Red No. 3)
allura red (Red No. 40b)

In an ideal world, we could get all of the nutrition we need from food.
However, in the world we currently inhabit, getting the nutrition we need from diet alone is not just extremely difficult, it may well be impossible.
Declining soil quality, long distance transportation and decline of nutrient density of food in transit, an increasingly toxic environment, genetic alterations of heirloom varieties of food, overuse of antibiotics and other medications that damage the gut and liver, a massive increase in chronic stress, decreased sleep quality and duration, and reduced connection with nature and less time spent outdoors all add up to necessitate the supplementing of our diets with quality vitamins and minerals.
In this episode, learn about the top 3 most important vitamins and minerals (besides vitamin D) that you should be supplementing with today.

Today we have some super exciting news here for you on the Renegade Nutrition Podcast!
We at Renegade Nutrition are creating a docu-series! Inspired by their own health journeys, Kay and Elanie realized that what stands between an individual and their journey to complete wellness is empowerment. Individuals who feel empowered push the boundaries of their health and advocate for themselves - they forgo the status quo. But when an individual doesn’t feel empowered, their journey ends before it ever begins.
We need to change that. So, we are starting an adventure to capture and document the journeys of people just like you, who completely revolutionized their health from the inside-out, along with interviewing the renowned health professionals who guided them along the way. Whether dealing with heart disease, cancer, Alzheimer's, diabetes, autoimmune disease, infertility, ADHD or ASD - we will share all of the tools others have used to thrive, so that you can do the same. If you or a loved one is struggling with illness or disease, this is a docu-series you will not want to miss.
But we need your help. Making a single documentary, let alone a docu-series, is NOT cheap. It will likely cost us $50,000 per episode to pay for film crew, editing, travel, lodging, and interviews. That doesn’t include any sort of income for either Kay or Elanie, but that’s okay, we’re not doing this for money! Our passion is to help others, and finding and succeeding in that passion is payment enough. In order to fund each series episode, we plan to launch a campaign on Kickstarter. But in order to be successful, we need an awesome, kick-a** trailer video that adequately conveys our mission. The cost to make that trailer video will probably be around $5,000. So, we’re asking you for help getting that initial trailer video funded, so that we can launch on Kickstarter.
Humankind needs you. Will you help? Send us a check or Venmo a donation towards creating this revolutionary docu-series. Any amount you can give helps! Thank you in advance, you have all of our love and gratitude!
