Elsa Collins grew up on both sides of the U.S.-Mexico border, living in Tijuana, Mexico but going to school in San Diego. Her experiences living near the border shaped her childhood and ultimately her career. After meeting and marrying NBA star Jarron Collins at Stanford University, they started a family—and raising multiracial kids awakened in her a passion for community organizing and advocating for policies that would help her children, and those in her community, thrive. Nitika knew from a young age that something was wrong with her health. After being diagnosed with psoriasis and psoriatic arthritis by age 19, Nitika struggled physically and emotionally with the challenges of having chronic illnesses. Her decision to embrace her role as a chronic illness advocate led to her pivot into founding Chronicon, a community and annual conference for the 133+ million Americans living with chronic illness. Betty is not just the oldest park ranger in history, but her pivot at the age of 85 was preceded by a life full of pivots. From one of the first Black-owned record store owners in California to civil rights activist to all of the personal changes and pivots in between. Betty is a decorated park ranger, receiving the presidential medal of honor from President Obama and still receiving shoutouts on his Instagram.
