Description

Pacific Oaks College is located in an urban setting in the city of Pasadena in Los Angeles County. Much like the Southern California region, Pasadena residents are racially, ethnically, and economically diverse.
In 2019, Dr. Jack Paduntin was named President of Pacific Oaks College. He developed a committee to research the feasibility of meeting the eligibility requirement and applied to the Department of Education for a Hispanic Serving Institution grant.
Pacific Oaks College applied with 48.7% of its total undergraduate student population being Latinx, above the 25% eligibility requirement. In October 2020, Pacific Oaks was awarded a U.S. Department of Education Title V Grant, providing $2.5 million across five years.
These funds allowed us to implement a wide range of services to academically support our student retention to graduation and thrive during their college experience.
Students benefit from a dedicated Undergraduate Success Center with a lending library of books and laptops, complimentary bi-lingual tutoring service, academic advising, and a speaker series to share the backstory and successes built on a foundation of higher education of Latinx students.
Kicked off by Dr. Judy Castro, Pacific Oaks College’s Associate Vic President of Partnership Development, this podcast series is part of our HSI grant’s educational outreach to raise awareness of the value and importance of higher education degree attainment within the Latino community.
This podcast will provide information on how to begin your college dream. You’ll learn about financial aid and completing the FAFSA, aligning your interests with a college degree program, the application process, and what campus resources are available to you.
We’ll share motivating stories from local Latinos who have overcome challenges and earned their college degree as the foundation for their success. You will also hear from faculty and alumni who are there to support you as a student to strive and excel, becoming self-sufficient and successful.

In the episode of Mentorship, we had the pleasure of having multiple voices share their experience with mentorship across many levels. We each shared our insight as mentors first, but also as mentees and the needs of both throughout the experience. This is a very impactful topic, because in today’s society young people are not taught the importance of having a mentor. No matter who you are, and what phase of life you are in, you deserve to have a guide who will nurture, guide, and support you in your own pursuit of happiness. Everyone deserves to live their life in a state of joy in their personal and professional lives. A successful mentor-mentee relationship can be very beneficial to all parties involved! After listening to our discussion, it is our hope that more audience members would have a desire to seek out a Mentor in their own lives.
