Ansley Simpson is a Toronto-based Michi Saagiig Nishnaabe singer, songwriter, and composer. Ansley's musical continuation of the story is filled with compassion, humour, mystery, and a healthy blend of dark and light. In this—the finale episode of Season 1—Ansley talks about the making of the album, and guides us through the meaning behind each song. Ansley also talks about other aspects of life as a working musician, such as : developing her singing voice (with the help of vocal coach Micah Barnes), touring with her sister Leanne Betasamosake Simpson for the [Polaris Short-listed] album Theory of Ice, composing the soundtrack for the Amplify TV series on APTN (watch the making of Ansley's song "Firewater" on Season 1), and scoring the documentary Spirit to Soar based on Tanya Talaga's book Seven Fallen Feathers. Monique Barry is a classically-trained singer, songwriter, composer, and music educator. Her music is unique, ethereal, dreamlike, and emotional, and ranges from techno pop to ambient folk. Monique's latest album—HAAK—is being released one single at a time - a slow drip of elegant melodies and intricate beats. The latest single—"Time"—is a spellbinding exploration of what Tennessee Williams called "the longest distance between two places". Monique possesses a truly independent spirit, dedicating her passion and skills to every aspect of music-making: from nurturing an initial song idea and creating a demo, to arranging, producing, packaging and promoting a full album. In this conversation, she and Jane discuss the intricacies, joys, and challenges of life in the indie lane: gigs, bands, travel, funding, reviews, airplay, and the inevitable...TikTok. Simon Paradis is an accomplished roots/rock musician, having played in bands across Canada for over 30 years. One morning in 2008, while working his construction job on the Sunshine Coast in B.C., Simon fell off a scaffold and landed on the pavement below, resulting in massive brain and spinal cord trauma. He and his band The Precious Littles were set to release a new album that weekend at the Vancouver Island Music Festival, one that would hopefully gain them some notoriety and enable Simon to spend less time on the job site, and more time focused on his music. Things were going to change... They did, but not the way Simon expected. In her 2015 book Fallen: A Trauma, A Marriage, and the Transformative Power of Music, Simon’s wife Kara recounts the days and weeks that followed the accident, as the couple—along with their family and friends—navigated an emotional, turbulent, and uncertain landscape. As the situation went from what seemed like almost hopeless to what some would call miraculous, music played a key role. It was always there, providing solace, joy, and ultimately a tool for Simon’s brain to re-map itself. Despite extensive damage throughout his body and daunting medical obstacles (the accident resulted in—among other things—paralysis from the waist down, a stroke on his left side, and loss of hearing on his right), Simon managed to make a stunning recovery. His passion, optimism, sense of humour, tenacity and hard-core work ethic resulted in his re-learning the guitar, while simultaneously figuring out how to navigate his new life as a musician with a disability. In this episode, Simon and Kara talk openly about their life, their work, and the challenges and victories along the way. You'll also be treated to the Music Buddy Band version of Simon and Kara’s song “Night is Here”. Music releases dopamine, and dopamine makes us feel good! It’s a scientific fact. We get happy when we listen to music. Who doesn't love going to see their favourite band live, or singing along to a treasured album, or staring out the car window with the perfect road song on the radio. But there's so much more to it than that...In her remarkable debut book Wired for Music: A Search for Health and Joy Through the Science of Sound, author Adriana Barton guides us through her own personal musical journey, and the many ways in which the brain and music work in harmony. Adriana left her life as a classical cellist in her late 20s, after a gruelling 17 years of intense musical discipline. In this episode, Adriana talks about how she made her way back to music via discoveries about the science of music, and learning how it can help with mood, anxiety, overall well-being, and even healthy aging. You'll also hear Adriana perform "Tadzungaira", a traditional song of the Mbira, from Zimbabwe. In this episode, Alan talks about studying with the world-renowned trumpeter and educator Vincent Chicowicz (Chicago Symphony Orchestra, Northwestern University), how a solo by Bix Beiderbecke made him love jazz, and how Tchaikovsky's music sparked his desire to compose. He also recalls his friendship with the great trumpeter Clark Terry (Count Basie, Duke Ellington, Oscar Peterson), and explains how a visit to Helsinki created a long-standing musical partnership with the Finnish bassist, Wade Mikkola.Throughout the episode you'll witness Alan's deep understanding of the language of improvised music, and be treated to his encyclopaedic knowledge of jazz from the last century and onward.Find out more about Alan at alanmatheson.comMusic samples in this episode:“Open Letter to Mingus” - Written by Alan Matheson, performed by the Alan Matheson Nonet“Ballad of the Fallen” - El Salvadorean folk song, performed by Charlie Haden's Liberation Music Orchestra “On the Sunny Side of the Street” - Written by Jimmy McHugh/Dorothy Fields, performed by Diana Krall“Vernal Suite” - Written by Christin Jensen, performed by The Christine Jensen Jazz Orchestra“Concerto for 2 Trumpets in C Major” - Written by Antonio Vivaldi, performed by Vincent Cichowicz and Fred Herseth “Jackson Square” - Written by Alan Matheson, performed by the Alan Matheson Nonet“Love Nest” - Written by Otto Harbach and Louis Hirsch, performed by Bix Beiderbecke with Paul Whiteman “In A Mist” - Written and performed by Bix Beiderbecke“The Mooche” - Written by Duke Ellington and Irving Mills, performed by the Duke Ellington Orchestra (feat. Steve "Lips" Kudlow and Robb Reiner aka "The Hungo Hammer" have been bandmates and rock 'n roll co-conspirators since the 1970s. Their band Anvil had massive success in the 1980s after the release of their now-classic album, "Metal is Metal". Bands such as Anthrax, Slayer, and Metallica all credit Anvil with having influenced their sound. Due to forces beyond their control, Anvil's success didn't stick, and they toiled in obscurity for several years... until 2009, when an old friend and roadie—Sacha Gervasi—approached them about making a documentary about the band. Anvil: The Story of Anvil took the world by storm with its gritty but touching story of true friendship, commitment, and artistic integrity. The rock doc re-ignited fans around the world. Since then, the band has been living their long-held dream of touring full-time, and making a living as musicians. Now, 13 years after its initial release, the re-mastered Anvil: The Story of Anvil, is being re-released to theatres, to the delight of fans both new and old. In this interview, Jane talks to drummer Robb Reiner and director Sacha Gervasi about the buzz around the film's release, the band's imminent European tour, and what success means. Plus, Jane suggests a name for the next Anvil album.LINKSAnvil: The Story of Anvil - Official WebsiteTheatrical release at Hot Docs, Toronto - Sept 27 & Oct 1 , 2022Anvil Facebook pageMUSIC IN THIS EPISODE Samples:"Teabag" - Impact is Imminent (2022) "Lockdown" - Impact is Imminent (2022)"Oh, Jane" - Hard'N'Heavy (1981)"Plastic in Paradise" - Legal at Last (2020)"Metal on Metal" - Metal on Metal (1982)Theme Song:Music Buddy's theme song is called "Human Stuff".
