Welcome back to Hacker Hangouts, it's Silk, Gater, Gourry, and Gulo. In this episode, we're diving into the hotly debated topic of whether TikTok should be banned in the United States. We'll be sharing our thoughts on how the conversation started, what makes TikTok stand out from other platforms, and what possible solutions might look like. Join us as we break down the Restrict Act, a US bill that tackles data privacy and security issues by potentially banning adversarial foreign entities applications and businesses but hasn't been finalized yet. We'll discuss our concerns about how vague the bill is and how it could be misused if not carefully crafted. Plus, we'll talk about the need for better data protection frameworks that apply to all companies, whether they're from the US or abroad. We'll be stressing the importance of increased transparency, user control, and company accountability. We believe that thoughtful steps need to be taken to protect user privacy while still allowing people to connect with each other online. So, tune in and join our conversation as we explore the complexities of the TikTok debate from a hacker's perspective. Thanks for watching and hack on! In this episode of Hacker Hangouts titled "Hackers Unplugged: There is Nothing More to Talk About," we are going to delve into the inner workings of the podcast. We will be talking about the journey we have taken from the early days of just hanging out and talking about hacking to the “more structured topics” we have today to where I want to start going in the future. We will discuss the challenges, like figuring out what topics to cover, and the imposter syndrome we sometimes experience when we feel like we don't have anything new to share. We will also talk about how we have expanded by brining in new faces and how we have utilized platforms like Discord. We will also touch on the software I created called Hacker Herder that has helped us manage the podcast and help things run smoothly. We will discuss the future of the podcast and the plans for continuing to create content Overall, we want to express our appreciation to our listeners and share our passion for the hacker community. Join me and my friends Gater, Loops, and Gourry on the upcoming episode of Hacker Hangouts podcast, "The End of Curiosity: How ChatGPT is Killing the Cat", where we will explore the future of search engines and the potential impact of conversational search engines like Bing Chat that use ChatGPT. These new search engines may eliminate the need to actually visit external sites for information, as users can get the answers they need from the search engine's chat interface. But what does this mean for the thrill of discovery that is at the heart of hacking? Will conversational search engines like Bing Chat that use ChatGPT change the way we approach problem-solving and experimentation, or will they simply make the search for information more efficient and productive, potentially removing the joy of discovery from the process? As members of the hacker community, we believe that hacking is not just about technical skills, but also about approaching problems with a curious mindset and a willingness to experiment and learn. We will discuss whether the new model of conversational search engines will remove the joy of discovery from the search process, leading to the death of discovery. What does the future hold for the hacker community, and how can we continue to foster a love for exploration and experimentation in a changing technological landscape? Join us for a thought-provoking discussion and gain insight and laugh as we bumble our way through another live podcast. Thanks for watching and hack on! Another wave of egregious findings have come out and I may have been stolen... weird story. Should we keep patching things? What are the alternatives to patching software: Instead of patching software, one option might be to stop using the software altogether and switch to a different solution. Another option might be to continue using the software as is, even if it has known vulnerabilities or issues. What are the long-term consequences of patching versus not patching. So much to chat about. What are the potential long-term consequences of either decision, including the potential for increased security risks or lost productivity if the software is not patched, or the potential for ongoing costs and disruptions if the software is constantly being patched. Every time I release or use a "hacking" tool, I question the ethics of it. It is on me to determine if it will be maliciously used or is it just a tool? Should we care about how our tools are used? Should we build in safe guards? What about large issues like encryption and adding backdoors to it? Lots to unpack.  Come, chat, and hack on!
