This episode is (kind of) a 2/3 on the dog geekery scale. Caden and Sue talk about pragmatic dog training, letting clients go, boundaries and taking risks with our dogs, property ownership, English, French, Canadian and Mexican dog keeping cultures, rehoming pets and maple sirup. Enjoy! Anyone catch the FRIENDS reference? Caden and Sue talk about ... all the things they didn't plan to talk about: hunting, maple sirup, prong collars, the supreme court of Alabama and human reproduction, medically assisted suicide ... But REALLY, this episode is about discussing different view points and disagreeing respectfully, and there's also something about pragmatic training and our canine and equine working partners in there. Promise! C talks with author M.E. O'Brien whose books they devoured and find both hopeful and inspiring: maybe a just world beyond racial capitalism and nation states is possible ... maybe even within our lifetime. A world of "everything for everyone" or, as C likes to put it, a world where everything (material or not) is either given and received freely ... or not at all. Where saying no is as valid as saying yes. Where there are no strings attached to personal relationships of any kind. I'm very much ready for it. Are you? This episode is a 3/3 on the dog geekery scale - it may only be interesting for dog professionals since it's about humans working in the field rather than dog training. In today's episode, C answers two questions: what's a smart way to increase difficulty once you have trained a behavior? And what should you do if your dream puppy turns into a juvenile dog who doesn't even remember their name? PS: if you have a brief question, just send it my way and I might answer it on one of the next episodes as well! This episode is a 2/3 on the canine nerd level scale. C answers a student's question about when to let a dog off leash ... And as almost always in dog training, their answer is: it depends. Matthias and C - two Europeans who have moved to the Americas - talk about living abroad and speculate about what personality traits might make you succeed at it. The cultural differences are certainly real - and these two Europeans love them. So much so that Matthias just became a Canadian citizen! C and Matthias barely talk about dogs in this episode, which in and of itself should count as an accomplishment. C is sorry about their less-than-stellar sign-off in this episode. You know how life sometimes just is A LOT? Well it is. No reason to not have a conversation on air with a friend - but sometimes, an elegant sign-off is too much to ask. As is publishing an episode on time. (And that's fine. We're a flaky Canadian and a flaky Mexican resident, after all! We WILL show up for you - we may just be a little late.) C muses about how for them, growth and self-discovery have tended to come from travel connections: the people you share a bunk bed with or end up next to on a bus in the middle of nowhere. Some connections are intense, others are fleeting, many are both of the above. All of them, when meaningful, will leave their mark in one way or another, inspiring change and - in C's case - stubbornly banging their head against a newly discovered wall or moments of appreciation of the beauty around them, the perfect imperfections of life and human connection. Canine nerd level scale: 2.5/3: both for the engaged dog enthusiast who already knows things, and wants to learn even more, and for highly educated dog and animal training folks who love digging into the nerdy details of theory and philosophy. C talks to their former student and fellow pet professional Morgan about changing training philosophies for individual dogs, the Coonhound breed and hog hunting in the Southern US. We also touch upon the personality trait of risk-seeking versus risk-avoidance (freedom versus safety) in humans and wonder whether this influences how much freedom we want our dogs to have. Get ready for a wild and somewhat eclectic, yet all connected deep-dive into recalls, training methods, personalities and hunting! Get in touch with Morgan: Reach out to C and they'll put you in touch!  Resources mentioned in this episode: E13 Dog geekery: negative reinforcement demystified Thank you ...
