I met Viktoria out of the blue when she contacted me about possibly crewing her in a race here in Georgia next month. She ended up deciding against doing the race. Who does that?! But we kept talking and knowing that she is a total badass in our sport, I finagled my way into an interview. What an inspiring story! She has won several world championship titles and holds 3 different current Canadian records. She's also a coach, and effective today, she's my co...
Meet Leah Vincent! She's an artist, an estate sales professional, and a badass ultra runner. She's the self-titled queen of DNF's, but she did not DNF Moab 240 this year. She got the job done with many adventures. She has taken the lessons from her not so fortunate experiences and turned them into valuable tools in her toolkit. Enjoy an informative and entertaining chat with an awesome human!@lifewithleahkateSquirrel's Nut Butter: Natural Anti-Chafe & Skin Re...
Joey Lichter is a dear friend of mine that I met as part of the Florida Ultra Running Community. He lives in South Florida and is a college professor, badass ultra runner, and just a well-read, super smart guy. We covered many subjects including the election, politics, DNF's, running, races, psychedelics, etc. He has run quite a few ultras including HOTS, Vol State, Cowboy 200, Icarus 48 hr, Stinger, 6 Days in the Dome, and on and on. He's a common sight as a crew or vo...
Meg Eckert is the new female BYU world record holder at 362.5 miles. But that's not all, she's won numerous events from Snow Drop Ultra in Texas to 6 Days in the Dome. Ed "The Jester" Ettinghausen is a 62-year-old man that ran his first ultra at 46 years old. He had run some marathons and decided to try an ultra. His first ultra happened to be a 24 hour race and well, you guessed it, he made 100+ miles on his first try. Now he didn't immediately set out to run 100's every weekend, but has evolved into 280 finished races of 100 miles or more. He's done 41 this year so far with 2 more planned this coming weekend. When I first heard of ...
When I started my conversation with Whitney Dutton, I had even considered rescheduling because I had lost my mojo after a disheartening DNF at Miami. But within minutes she had me laughing out loud and remembering all the things I love about running crazy long distances and our amazing community. Nothing else to say, really. She has an awesome story and is a joy to listen to. You're welcome! @cereal_runnerSquirrel's Nut Butter: Natural Anti-Chafe & Skin Resto...

Etienne Durocher will probably never introduce himself to anyone as the Canadian Cowboy, lol, but in his early days he hadd a ranch and actually rode bulls and did calf-roping, so the name at least used to fit. My friend Rachel Belmont introduced me to Etienne a month or so ago and finally got the chance to sit down and chat with him last week. What an interesting guy and interesting story!Hope you enjoy! @wrangler_76@philotimo_running_coachPhilotimo Running Coach - Online r...
Brandon Miller from Calgary, Alberta won his entry to TransRockies by winning The Moab Run the Rocks, a 3 Day Sister Race, so he was no stranger to trail domination. Brandon has done very well in races with lots of elevation gain so he was right his element going up and over the many challenging climbs of the beautiful Ortholite TransRockies 6 day stage race. Day 1 was a nice rolling adventure, but day 2, the climbing began by going from Vicksburg, CO up and over Hope Pass to Lead...
David Tosch and his wife Marye Jo are Race Directors from Alabama. They have Southeastern Trail Runs. They have many races and you can follow the link at bottom to check them out. They are RD's for the Southern States 200 which is the host of 200 Miles With Marty Project. David is also a very accomplished runner with a sub 2:50 marathon PR and many tough 100's under his belt. I always enjoy chatting with and learning from the experienced runners and this one is n...
Last Saturday, 8/10, I flew out to Colorado to begin my TransRockies Run adventure, and wow, was it an adventure! I got to hang with some friends, made a ton of new friends, see some epic scenery and run some really challenging mountain trails. The Ortholite TransRockiesRun is a turnkey adventure. You get yourself to Denver and they can take care of the rest. They shuttle you to the base camp, feed you, and bring you back. The courses are mapped out, supported, a...
Mikey Bee of Sandspur Ultras has a reputation for inventing crazy hard races in and around Jupiter, Florida to challenge the mind and body. Some may call him sadistic. But one thing's for sure, Mikey is a beloved member of the Florida Ultrarunning Community, and that community really shows up to run and volunteer at his races. The Trident races are the last weekend in July. There are 2 - half marathons, a daytime and nighttime. There's a marathon, a 12-hour versi...
Lauren Klein is a UESCA certified ultra-running coach in the Reno, Nevada area. I first heard about her and the excellent crewing and pacing skills she possesses in my interview with Cocodona 250 and Tahoe 200 champ Harry Subertas, her partner. He also mentioned she was a coach which made me curious to hear her story. Coming from the athletic trainer background at the Major League Baseball level gives her a unique perspective on physical ability, injury rehab, and many other...
Tara Dower is an ultrarunner from Virginia. Very few hills there but she is not afraid of the mountain races. Her most recent race was Hardrock 100 and she took 4th place. She has wins at Umstead, Uwharrie, Blood Rock, Devil Dog, Hellbender, and Run Rabbit Run. She holds an FKT already, she's also making a run at the Southbound Appalachian Trail FKT in just a few weeks. Tara is such an energetic and positive person. It was a treat to get to know her. ...
I first met Scott Owenby immediately after he sprinted past me at about a 6-minute pace to finish his first sub 24 - 100 miler at The Bronze Dragonfly in Savannah, Ga. He looked like he could have gone sub 20 at that point, and he probably will one day. Scott is a competitive guy that is fairly new on the 100 mile scene. So, we will see where he takes it. He's got an awesome story and does a great job telling it. Enjoy!Run 4 a Reason's Rough Runners – Road Runner...
Philip Nameich is another Florida ultra-running friend of mine. We have run and crewed several of the same races, had the same coach for a period of time and share a passion for running ultras and the community. He's coming off a finish at Tahoe 200 and his first 200 miler as well as a great finish to 2023 with a sub-24-hour finish at Daytona 100. He's also a Race Director in South Florida for the El Gato Rebelde 6 and 12 hour ultra. It's held Spring and Fall. He...
This episode is dedicated to a sweet little ole lady named Laura Schmidt. Hear more about Miss Laura in the episode. Dan Hernandez and Kerry Dulina of Rough Runners Run 4 a Reason in Savannah are two dear friends of mine and just 2 awesome members of the ultra-running community as well as their local community. They not only put on great races, but they also go out of their way to positively impact the community. A lot of us can learn from them how we can carry that mi...
Amy Bukszpan aka The Banana Champ, is a good friend, a total bada$$ ultra runner, a PHD level behavioral analyst, and a UESCA certified ultra running coach. She's also really funny and smart, which make for great conversation. I think she may have the PR (podcast record) for most appearances on this podcast, but each time has been for entirely different subjects. Enjoy. BobbieJoe Derhak is a dear friend, a fellow music lover, ultra runner, and UESCA certified ultra running coach. Here's her story and a bit about her coaching philosophy. It's the first of a series with new or fairly new coaches on the scene. This is not a paid promotion, just using my platform to help good people to help other good people. Harry Subertas was born and raised in Lithuania, which is mostly flat, but he had dreams of climbing mountains. So he made his way eventually to Alaska where he landed a dream job of guiding mountain climbing expeditions. Like for so many of us, Covid affected his livelihood, and he ended up having to do other things and his childhood love for running eventually found its way into his adult life. And wow, he has come a long way in a short time. He is a 2:45 marathoner,...
