In this episode, we delve into the insightful journey of Jasmine Cochran, an accomplished writer whose experiences in China profoundly shaped her understanding of racism and cultural dynamics. With a background in English literature, Jasmine embarked on a transformative adventure when she and her husband and two daughters relocated to China. Living in China provided Jasmine with a firsthand encounter with various facets of racism, both in urban centers and rural areas. Despite facing instances of prejudice, she also discovered the warmth and hospitality of the Chinese people, painting a nuanced picture of her experiences. These encounters sparked Jasmine's commitment to challenging ingrained beliefs and fostering critical thinking. After years immersed in Chinese culture, Jasmine and her family returned to America to care for her father in his final days. This transition offered Jasmine a unique perspective on racial issues, particularly observing the willingness of Chinese students to question traditional beliefs and engage in discussions on race. Jasmine's journey is captured in her life experiences and her book, "Keep Waking Up in the Mourning." The book pays tribute to her father while offering solace and guidance to those navigating grief.
