Welcome to another episode of The Weeniecast - the podcast for ADHD entrepreneurs seeking business strategies. I'm your host Katie McManus.  As someone who has personally experienced the challenges of starting a business and dealing with the pressure and expectations that come with it, I understand the importance of addressing our emotional well-being. We often get so caught up in the intellectual side of things, trying to make sense of our feelings, that we neglect to actually process and release them.  Watch the episode promo   Don't be intellectualizing emotions!  It's essential for ADHD entrepreneurs to learn how to fully feel and process their emotions, both the good and the bad. By doing so, we not only gain a better understanding of ourselves, but also enhance our ability to connect with others and build successful businesses. Emotions should not be seen as obstacles to success, but rather as tools that can support and guide us on our entrepreneurial journey. I, myself, have had to to the work on this thanks to PTSD caused by a brain injury, and I recognize the importance of therapy in supporting my business endeavors. Do you know, children with ADHD often struggle to communicate their emotions effectively, leading to emotional dysregulation? Many individuals with ADHD learn to intellectualize their emotions rather than process them fully, resulting in trapped energy and unresolved feelings. This can be detrimental to both personal and professional growth. The stigma around your natural emotions when you have adhd The episode highlights the misconceptions and stigma surrounding emotions, particularly in the business world. Emotions are often seen as obstacles to success rather than valuable tools for understanding and connecting with others. Katie challenges this perspective, highlighting the importance of embracing the full range of emotions to live a fulfilling life and run a successful business. She acknowledges the difficulty of processing negative emotions but emphasizes the necessity of doing so in order to fully experience positive emotions like joy and love. The key moments in this episode are: 00:00:52 What really helps when coping with trauma and stress. 00:03:18  Crying is stigmatized; emotions are intellectualized. 00:07:02 Children's movie showcases importance of emotional intelligence. 00:12:03  Acceptable reasons to take time off work. 00:15:41  Thrift shop finds to help process emotions. 00:17:53  Don't suppress emotions, ignore false promises. ADHD entrepreneur - here are the qualities you need to seek in your business 'comrades'! Welcome back to another episode of The Weeniecast - the podcast for ADHD entrepreneurs seeking business strategies. I'm your host Katie McManus and in this week's episode I’m reflecting on my own entrepreneurial journey and sharing the five key qualities I look for in others as an ADHD entrepreneur.  Without wishing to make it sound like we're filling in a dating app shopping list, it's really important to make sure you're always right swiping on the people who lift you, not hold you back. From genuine passion for their work to a strong focus on impact and creative problem-solving, these qualities are essential for building a supportive and thriving business network.  But that's not all – I’m also going to talk about setting boundaries and valuing your own worth as a professional.  How to surround yourself with individuals who understand the value of mutually beneficial transactions and are not afraid to ask, "What's in it for me?" We’ll also look into why being asked to work for free is an absolute nope and why you need to walk away from people who think it’s OK to do that! Watch the episode promo Qualities to Look for as an ADHD Entrepreneur Ok, so there are a few qualities that are important for building a successful business and maintaining motivation.  I just want to name that it's crucial to surround yourself with people who genuinely love what they do and are passionate about their work.  And I mean obsessively, fandom creating-ly passionate! Money shouldn't be the sole measure of success; instead, it's important they, and you, focus on the impact you have on clients and the world. Being resourceful and having a can-do attitude is also essential for overcoming challenges. It's also hella important to surround yourself with supportive individuals in your industry and those who are comfortable with transactional relationships! Overcoming Challenges and Being Resourceful Surrounding yourself with peeps who are always being resourceful and having a 'can do' spirit is crucial in entrepreneurship.  And especially so when you have ADHD! Rather than giving up when faced with obstacles, successful entrepreneurs see challenges as opportunities to tap into their creativity and network. And if they're really smart, that network includes you! They find ways around the walls and barriers and maintain an optimistic mindset. Surrounding yourself with individuals who have this problem-solving mentality can greatly benefit your own entrepreneurial journey. The key moments in this episode are: 00:02:58 Avoid lone wolves who view business as a cutthroat game 00:04:08 Surround yourself with confident, transactional people 00:04:52 It’s ok to say “no”. Many of us have stumbled into ventures without a grand plan, but I want to underscore the significance of commitment once you've taken the plunge. The Truth About Laziness and ADHD: Dispelling Misconceptions and Promoting Productivity (Psst! The resource Katie mentions in this episode is here - weeniecast.com/adhdsocialmedia) "Sometimes being lazy is just a massive sign from the universe that you need to hire someone else to do this for you or get some help. It's not a reflection of your capabilities, it's a strategic decision for your productivity." - Katie McManus Hey there, my ADHD tribe! In this episode of the Weeniecast, join me, Katie McManus, as we dive into the misunderstood world of laziness and ADHD. Discover the truth behind executive dysfunction, the need for rest, and the difficulty in shifting gears. But be prepared for a twist that will leave you questioning everything you thought you knew about laziness... Accessibility: Transcript of the episode Episode promo   Need more personal one-to-one help from me? Stop being a weenie and book a call with me! Here's the link - https://bookkatiemcmanus.as.me/Strategycall Stop Calling Yourself Lazy Let's shake up that story we've been telling ourselves, the one where we call ourselves 'lazy'. Ouch! When we hear people call us that it's like pouring salt in a wound and it's as far from the truth as a chihuahua is from a T-Rex. We're not lazy – far from it. We're simply prioritizing in a world that often seems to be spinning faster than we can keep up. 🌍 In our latest Weeniecast episode, we're taking that tired ol' 'L' word and tossing it in the trash! Why? Because it's not serving us. Instead, let's dish out some kindness and understanding to ourselves. 🙌 Sometimes, what looks like inaction is just our brains needing a pit stop or seeking some much-needed help. It doesn't mean we're deficient. On the contrary, it's a sign of wisdom - we're not stupid, we know when to take a breath and re-evaluate our game plan. 🧩 Remember, you're not lazy, you're simply a strategic prioritizer! Delegating and Hiring Help Ever stared down a task that felt like you were trying to herd cats? Been there, worn the fur! Trust me - there’s no medal for trying to wrangle the un-wrangle-able. 🐈 Here’s the secret sauce: Delegation. It's an unsung hero in our ADHD toolkit and a game-changer when it comes to managing executive dysfunction. It's not about being 'lazy' (let's fire that word off into the cosmos, shall we?). It’s about being a smart player on the chessboard of life. ♟️ In my latest Weeniecast episode, as I have in previous ones!, I’m hoisting the flag for delegation and outsourcing. You know those 'lazy' tasks (the ones that seem about as easy to tackle as herding cats)? Well, they could be someone else's piece of cake, their 'zone of genius.' 🎂 So here’s the big reveal: It’s perfectly okay not to do everything yourself. In fact, it’s pure genius. Reach out, delegate, and watch your game level soar like an eagle on jet fuel. It’s all about playing smart, not hard. 😉 The Importance of Rest Think 'rest' and 'lazy' are synonymous? Let me tell you, they're about as similar as apples and hedgehogs. In the ADHD entrepreneur world, it's easy to believe that rest equals laziness. But that's about as far from the truth as we can get. Rest is the unsung hero of productivity, not its nemesis. It's the secret sauce that keeps us going, the recharge that fuels our drive. Trust me, there are days when I'm flying a thousand miles an hour and I feel every bit of it. Rather than pushing myself into the ground, I've learned to embrace the power of the pause.  Rest isn't a sign of weakness, and it's not a luxury—it's a pit stop on the highway to success. So let's stop guzzling energy drinks and start letting ourselves recharge. Your business, your brain, and your sanity will thank you. Listen to this latest Weeniecast episode to unpack more about the power of rest. Because burnout is so last season—we're all about balance now In this episode, you will: ·         Hear me debunk common misconceptions surrounding ADHD and laziness, bringing clarity to a commonly misunderstood topic. Discover the often blurred distinction between laziness and executive dysfunction, shedding new light on behaviors previously attributed to lack of effort. Realize the underrated but fundamental role rest plays in the lives of people with ADHD, an important counterpoint to today's fast-paced society. Learn to manage executive dysfunction with effective strategies, essential tools to navigate life with ADHD. Reframe inaction from a weakness into a sign of learning or a cry for help, promoting a culture of productivity steeped in self-compassion and understanding. Yep, it's a real thing, and as business owners with ADHD, we need to be mindful of its potential pitfalls. Here's the deal: social media can be both a blessing and a curse. It offers us opportunities to connect, showcase our work, and engage with our audience. But it can also become a slippery slope, leading us down a rabbit hole of seeking external validation through likes and comments. It pulls our focus away from our primary goals and can seriously hamper our productivity. Instead of pouring our energy into creating meaningful content and connecting with potential clients, we find ourselves anxiously refreshing our feeds, waiting for that dopamine hit from engagement. We need to break free from this cycle.  We must prioritize activities that directly contribute to our business growth and client acquisition. Let me be clear: I'm not saying to abandon social media altogether. It's about establishing a healthy relationship with it. We must avoid tying our personal value and self-worth to social media engagement and results. Instead, let's focus on self-awareness and what truly matters. I'm here to remind you that posting content is just the tip of the iceberg. The real magic happens when we actively engage with others, listen to their stories, and build meaningful relationships. It's these connections that lay the foundation for long-term business success. So, my friends, let's practice self-awareness and find that healthy balance in the digital world. Let's free ourselves from the grip of social media addiction and refocus our energy on what truly moves the needle in our businesses. Join me, Katie McManus, as we navigate this digital landscape together and build a thriving business that aligns with our passions and values. Say goodbye to the addiction and hello to genuine connections and business growth.  Click play on the episode to start that journey! This episode that's all about avoiding ADHD social media addiction covers: The pitfalls of chasing viral content: Exploring the dangers of seeking validation through likes and comments on social media platforms and the potential for addiction tied to dopamine release. Quality over quantity: Emphasizing the significance of having a targeted and engaged audience rather than simply focusing on the number of followers, highlighting personal success stories with a smaller but more valuable following. Strategies to break social media addiction: Providing practical approaches for ADHD business owners to overcome social media distractions, including creating daily checklists and shifting the focus from seeking external validation to celebrating consistent actions and accomplishments. Building relationships over chasing engagement: Encouraging active engagement with others' posts and fostering connections within the community, highlighting the power of meaningful relationships for business growth. Reclaiming productivity and priorities: Addressing the importance of maintaining a healthy relationship with social media, debunking comparisons with others, and emphasizing the value of consistent content creation and publication as opposed to relying solely on reception.   The key moments in this episode are: 00:00:00 - Why Going Viral on Social Media is Not Ideal 00:02:31 - Tying Dopamine Release to Actions Rather Than Results 00:05:07 - Addicted to Likes and Comments 00:07:48 - Controlling the Things in Your Control 00:14:17 - Starting with Easy Tasks 00:14:55 - Supporting Others vs. Chasing Likes and Comments 00:15:50 - Social Media is Gambling 00:17:27 - Irresponsible Advising for ADHD clients 00:18:31 - Making Things Up As We Go Related must-listen episodes     36: ADHD and authenticity: the power of using vulnerability online 31: How to create ADHD-friendly processes in your business 16: ADHD and social media marketing 13: ADHD and social media: staying visible! 1: How 'shiny object syndrome' in ADHD business owners can be... Building your brand around your ADHD authenticity "One of the best ways that you can build trust with your potential and ideal clients is by outing yourself as the beautifully imperfect person that you are... and demonstrating your ADHD authenticity." - Katie McManus, Brave Business Coaching Pssttt! Please help!!! I need you to fill in a two question survey for me real quick. Swear it will take you 30 seconds. weeniecast.com/coaching If you're feeling frustrated and defeated and.. just argghhhhh!!!! Ok, Katie breathe haha... Ok let's try that again! If you're feeling like you're in a tail spin because your carefully crafted social media posts aren't generating the engagement and sales you desire... then I want to name that you are not alone! Lots of us ADHD entrepreneurs struggle with the pressure to present a perfect and polished image online, but this can actually hinder our ability to build trust and community with our followers. And ultimately this hurts our bottom line because we're not turning them into clients!  Now don't misunderstand your ol' friend Katie here, embracing vulnerability and imperfection can be uncomfortable! Yet, if you try it, it allows for a more authentic connection with your audience. Instead of trying to hide your flaws, share them with your followers and let them see the human behind the brand. This transparency can lead to more meaningful relationships and ultimately, 'real' success on social media, not just the vanity metrics that we all think we're here for... And I'll be covering more on that topic, in the next following episode (37) so make sure you're following this podcast so you don't miss it... Promo     Accessibility: click to read a written-to-be-read transcript of the episode Building Trust with Imperfection In order to connect with potential clients and create a supportive community, you've gotta present yourself as genuine, relatable, and beautifully imperfect! By sharing our imperfections, we make ourselves more approachable and relatable, allowing audiences to see us as real people rather than experts with unattainable qualities.  This creates a bond of trust between you and your audience, which ultimately leads to a stronger and more loyal community of followers. Sharing our struggles, whether they're small everyday mishaps or larger personal challenges, can help entrepreneurs build trust with their audience. In this episode I want to recognize that sharing vulnerabilities is going to be especially challenging if you have ADHD and its common co-pilot rejection sensitivity dysphoria. But my goal with this episode is to talk you through starting slowly and then if you work with me on it, we can gradually build you up to new heights as you grow more comfortable sharing your stories with your audience. Sharing Scars, Not Wounds Now I appreciate that I just spent the entire previous section talking about how sharing our vulnerabilities is important, but let's not be hasty. Have a listen to the episode because it's essential to differentiate between how to share and how not to share. Like with most things in business and indeed life, there's nuance to this! Sharing in the wrong way can lead to trauma and tailspins, so let's prep this powerful new you that you're gonna bring to your socials, k? Hey, what are you waiting for? Stop being a weenie! Hit play!   Direct quote from episode   This episode that's all about ADHD authenticity covers: Discover the power of vulnerability and imperfection on social media in forming meaningful connections. Learn how to develop a relatable personal brand specifically tailored for ADHD entrepreneurs. Understand the distinction between sharing scars and wounds for maintaining emotional well-being. ADHD entrepreneur business strategy advice offered in this episode: Share a personal story or imperfection on social media to build trust with your potential clients. Use LinkedIn (and connect with me with a note to say you heard this episode!) to connect with ideal clients by allowing them to appear smart in the comments.  Share relatable imperfections like forgetting things or making silly mistakes. Avoid being scared of scaring people away by sharing past struggles or imperfections. Embrace your ADHD and don't feel like you are faking your competence. Use vulnerability to build trust with your audience and potentially gain super fans. Share light imperfections if sharing something super vulnerable scares you. Use the marble jar analogy to build trust with your audience gradually. Encourage your audience to take action by providing specific calls to action for products, services, or other tools you are promoting. Provide detailed instructions for your audience to find and access the product or service you are promoting.
