Pura Belpré was the first Puerto Rican librarian in the New York Public Library system. A gifted storyteller, Puppeteer, and author, she shared, re-interpreted, and wrote Puerto Rican folk tales, including publishing the first mainstream children's book for Spanish children in the continental United States in 1932. Black history celebrations date back to the 1860s inspired by Abraham Lincoln and Frederick Douglass, two men whose legacies are linked to the emancipation of enslaved Africans in America. How much do you know about MLK, Jr's legacy, or his family? Maybe you've had the privilege to hear them in person or maybe caught an interview or documentary. Or maybe like me, school gave you little more than his origin story and his infamous speech.
