As Tim Taylor said to his wife Jill on the family sitcom, Home Improvement, "If we're not in charge, then we're just the tallest people living here." In many households, kids rule the land, so today we're talking about how to make sure you as the parent are the leader and authority in your home... without yelling or any other negative reinforcements. We talk about the trickle down effects of an effective authority figure, like kids growing in to respected adults, as well as having an easier time as adults, being better in school, having peace in your home, and more. What do you think your kids crave most? It's simpler than you think. If you are struggling to bond with your youngsters, you might find a little relief after listening to this episode. We all need connection, and your babies and children of any age crave it desperately! We also received our first TWO listener questions that tie into today's topic perfectly! One question from Josh in the UK is a soon to be new parent that is young and nervous about fostering connection with their new baby. We talk about "The Five Love Languages" by Gary Chapman and how important they are in raising children into emotionally successful adults. Your children want 100% of your time, attention, and love. Another question comes from Sheena in Maryland... she asks how Sergeant Susie would handle a 1-year old who has started biting. Sometimes as any parent knows, this can be as simple as teething. But sometimes it's that your kids are craving... you guessed it... YOUR ATTENTION! Kids will do anything they have to to get your attention, and sometimes they will resort to poor behavior to get it. We also talk about Kelly's first visit to Reading Time at their Public Library and how great it was for Charlie to play and interact with others. Sergeant Susie shares her very simple approach to timeout tactics based on a child's age, as well are real-life timeout stories with all ages of children. We talk about when to give a child a timeout vs. when to take away an item causing the poor behavior. And we talk about acting quickly when behavior needs to be corrected, and the positive affect that zero tolerance has on poor behavior. (Kelly has done just a few timeouts with Charlie at this point.) Sergeant Susie shares her advice on how Kelly has been starting timeouts and offers suggestions to improve Kelly's current timeout method. We also cover what to do after the timeout is over. 🚩 TRIGGER WARNING 🚩 *In this podcast episode, we discuss drowning events, kidnapping, and a shooting, which some listeners may find distressing. We discuss respecting boundaries set by THE PARENTS. Even the strongly opinionated Sergeant Susie asks "do you REALLY want to know what I think" before offering her advice. We talk lightly about differing rules between households. Then we segue into overstepping boundaries when safety is a concern. SGT Susie has so many instances where to stepped into protect other people's children, including strangers. Kelly learns for the first time why her mom hovered so strongly over the years, and both Kelly and Sergeant Susie talk about how that single negative (or traumatizing) event can change the entire trajectory of your parenting style. Susie shares how she was always finding activities that are fun for the whole family... tennis, roller-skating, martial arts, and on and on. And specifically how juggling (literally juggling) became a lifelong interest that grew into generational family fun. From big activities to little activities, every moment shared together as a family increases your bond. From athletics and clubs to enjoying family dinners together, sharing interests can make all the difference. Charlie turns 1-year-old this week! The most common question hears these days is... "are you going to stop breastfeeding?" Breastfeeding has actually been a mostly positive experience for Kelly and Charlie, starting from the first days in the hospital to nearly 1 year into Charlie's little life. Kelly shares her plans leading up to the birth of Charlie, breastfeeding through a formula shortage, and her overall experience. And don't forget the many products that made breastfeeding easier - she'll note those too!  Meanwhile, Sergeant Susie had a totally different experience with breastfeeding almost 40 years ago. Every mother's journey, experience, and needs are different, and we believe there is no wrong way to nourish your child!  We also talk about boob-life. Kelly gets Sergeant Susie a little out of her comfort zone talking about boobies! But thing one and thing two can change quite a bit when you've been pregnant and/or breastfeeding, and Kelly and SGT Susie both have different experiences thus far. So let's share! Sergeant Susie and Kelly dive into a Binky vs. Thumb-Sucking conversation, with practical and comical past stories to back why SGT Susie prefers one over the other. And what about the bigger picture of the attachment to a future item, like a stuffed animal, blankie, or other comfort item? We discuss attachment planning so that when that comfort item is dirty, lost, and/or needs replacement, you can already have a plan in place from Day #1 to make life for everyone at home easier! Have you ever considered teaching your baby a second language? You can, and you should! American Sign Language, also referred to as ASL, was already a small part of Sergeant Susie's and Kelly's life. Sergeant Susie takes us back in time to a story about an over-scheduled child. When are too many activities, just... too much? Sergeant Susie shares how she transformed chores like dusting, collecting leaves, and putting away toys into fun activities for her daycare kids (ages 18 months to 7 years old). So fun, in fact, that the kids requested to do those chores time and time again... because they were all activities that the kids enjoyed. Kelly's little one is at that age where he loves putting things in containers, and back out again - the perfect time to make "putting away" a game. Susie shares how creativity and attentiveness turned every day mundane chores into joyful and playful activities that the kids couldn't get enough of. In this episode, Kelly shares what's new in Charlie's developing skills - MOBILITY, yikes! Kelly's little one is mastering the art of crawling, pulling himself up, and that means there's a lot of standing in the crib (and other places). Mom and Dad are both worried that he is going to fall down and get some necessary bumps and bruises. Sergeant Susie shares what she did way back when her kids were little (namely, a story about host Kelly), and what she thinks would work for Kelly's household. Her insights in transitioning from crib to big boy bed is brilliant! Kelly broke down on the last 30 minutes of a 90-minute drive and pulled out a tablet to keep the little one happy. Sergeant Susie gave THAT LOOK that says, "Do you really want to know what I think?". Susie explains why she says "NO!" to digital devices. TVs, smartphones, tablets - you name it. They might make sticky situations easier, but we aren't teaching our kids the valuable lessons of patience and self-entertainment. Tune in for all the dirty details! This episodes conversation is sparked by What The Doctor Said. (Side Note: our pediatrician is AWESOME!) Kelly didn't agree, and figured Sergeant Susie wouldn't either... and she was right! But first, Kelly shares how Sleep Training has been going since the discussion in the previous episode, Episode 001 | Sleep Training, AKA, Mama Training 101. This episode dives into baby proofing, recommended by the doctor, much to our agreement, but he suggested something that we find to be a little dangerous. Kelly's been struggling with lack of sleep because of the little one (Charlie) waking up over and over, and progressively getting worse. Kelly and Susie talk about where she's been going wrong, where mom guilt comes into play, and they talk about what Kelly needs to do to get sleep back on track for the whole household. We'll give you a hint... the solution is called "sleep training"!
