Sometimes, the challenges don’t come up on the radar of parents as massive issues just like the concept of “anxious avoidance” which is subtly a notable sign of deeper clinical concerns. Anxious avoidance refers to a behavioral pattern often in response to anxiety or fear, actively avoiding situations, activities, or experiences that people perceive as threatening or uncomfortable. This avoidance can manifest in various forms, such as evading social interactions, steering clear of specific places or events, or even bypassing particular thoughts or emotions.This behavior can become problematic when it interferes with daily life, limits opportunities for growth, or hinders the individual's ability to face and cope with their fears. For some individuals, including children, they may go to great lengths to avoid situations that make them uncomfortable due to heightened anxiety levels. Withdrawal, as a common manifestation of anxiety, is not solely attributable to natural shyness or introversion. It represents a behavioral response wherein individuals, grappling with anxiety, tend to retreat or disengage from social interactions, events, or situations that trigger discomfort or heightened stress. These are highly sensitive individuals, and it's worth noting that 70% of individuals with ADHD, spanning all age groups, experience RSD. While it might seem like a minor issue, the inability to accurately perceive and manage time can lead to a cascade of challenges that affect their academic performance, relationships, and overall well-being. Overcoming time blindness and taking steps to address it is vital for personal development, professional success, and the well-being of individuals. And so, we delve into the significant ways in which time blindness influences children's daily routines, and we uncover strategies to help them better navigate the complex landscape of time management.Time blindness in children with ADHD and executive functioning challenges.I have a good familiarity with the concept of time blindness considering that I have a child who grapples with it. I can attest just how frustrating the experience can be, often leaving me perplexed and annoyed. It's one of those challenges that makes you wonder what to do. Parenting becomes even more challenging when your child seems to have no sense of time and I’m sure many parents can relate and agree with this. However, it’s important that we emphasize that our children are not doing this intentionally. Maybe they’re dealing with time blindness causing them to act that way. Essentially, time blindness is when a person lacks a perception of time. People with time blindness genuinely have no concept of time passing. Five minutes for them could feel like three hours. The prefrontal cortex, an area often affected in children dealing with ADHD or executive functioning challenges, holds a critical role in the comprehension of time. It acts as the brain's manager, responsible for coordinating various cognitive processes. This includes temporal processing, managing working memory, and making decisions, which explains why it plays a pivotal part in time perception.Time blindness is not just about being unable to estimate how long a task will take; it also involves overlooking events and deadlines, struggling with punctuality, procrastination, and misjudging time for tasks. However, the situation changes when daydreaming starts to disrupt essential aspects of a person's life.For individuals, particularly children, who grapple with inattentive ADHD, daydreaming can manifest differently. And when daydreaming associated with inattentive ADHD begins to impede important areas like relationships, academic performance, or personal growth, it becomes a significant concern.
