Hello My Tiny Bottles listeners! This summer has been really hectic, and I don't have a new episode for you this week. Instead, I'm bringing you a guest episode from another podcast I think you'll love - Liquor and Liqueur Connoisseur. Host Matt Birchard and I are planning to meet up later in the year to taste some Tiny Bottles together, but in the meantime, I wanted to give you a sneak peak at his podcast. This particular episode is Matt's take on Bottle #72 - Myers's Rum. He did some amazing digging to find out the origin story of the brand. Without it, I would have had almost nothing to say when I first talked about the company in Bottle #45 - Myers Original Rum Cream. So it's a really nice complement to my episodes. Give it a listen, and be sure to subscribe if you enjoy Matt's approach as much as I do! Cheers!
Grandma's collection of miniature liquor bottles has gifted me with three different coffee liqueurs so far - a 1960s or 70s Tia Maria, 1980s Cafe Noir from McGuinness, and 1990s Coloma coffee liqueur. In this episode I open them all with Bea Bradsell. Bea is director of The Drink Cabinet and daughter of Dick Bradsell, the man who invented the espresso martini, and a really important figure in the history of UK mixology. Bea and I talk about Dick's legacy, sample grandma's tiny bottles of coffee liqueur, and discuss which one would work best in an espresso martini. Tracking down the story of this tiny bottle of Inca Pisco from Peru took me to San Francisco, the home of the most famous Pisco cocktail of all - Pisco Punch. You can tell that coconut flavored rum was THE big thing during Grandma’s collecting period, because I have three different bottles of the stuff so far. I’ve already talked about two of them, Roncoco and Jonkanoo, and the unexpected tie between them. But now I get to talk about the one that came to the party last but has stuck around the longest, because bottle #71 is Malibu. Listen in to hear all about its unexpected origin and surprising connection to Bailey's Irish Cream. This was an really fun unboxing video from my grandmother's collection of vintage minis! Lots of bottles came up that will be great excuses to tell some of the stories I've been promising you. Rémy Martin is one of the “Big Four” Cognac houses that dominate production. One of the most obvious things that distinguishes it from the other Cognacs I’ve discovered in Grandma’s collection is that the company that makes it was actually founded by Frenchmen! Bottle #7: Martell’s founder was an Englishman, and Bottle #19: Hennessey’s was Irish. Learn all about that and more in this episode. Brands are more than the facts. Most successful brands, like successful superheroes, have some sort of mythology and origin story. But, just like superheroes get rebooted regularly, brands also change their myths to reflect their goals and the world around them. In this tasting episode with special guest Bill Ricker we pitted my tiny evaporated bottle of Bell's Extra Special blended Scotch up against a similar 1970s era full-size bottle that had fallen into Bill's hands. All things old are new again, and that includes Sloe Gin! This British gin-based liqueur is having a moment in recent years, but it’s been falling in and out of fashion for centuries. Another Portuguese Brandy! This one was harder to date than my bottle of 1940s Novil, but it led me to the story of Pocas Junior, a rare Port brand that was founded by an actual Portuguese family and has stayed family owned for four generations. New unboxing episode! This one was a wild ride that really expresses the whole range of Grandma's dusty bottles. Seagram's isn't the only important name in Canadian distilling history. When it comes to Google searches, Bottle #26: Boggs Cranberry Liqueur is one of the bottles on my website that gets the most hits. And it's because people who liked Boggs Cranberry Liqueur when it first came out LOVE the stuff, and they are searching still today for it. It's the story of two coconut liqueurs, Jonkanoo from Rieder Distilling and Roncoco from Ron Matusalem, and their unexpected connection. It's also the story of WHY Grandma had (at least) two coconut liqueurs with roots in the 1970s. If you guessed Pina Coladas, you win a walk in the rain! #62 Roncoco

#62 Roncoco

2024-05-1404:27

Bottle #62 is Roncoco, a coconut liqueur based on white rum, bottled in Lake Alfred, Florida, under the authority of Ron Matusalem of San Juan, Puerto Rico. As a rum fan, I was already aware of the Ron Matusalem name, although these days it is made and based in the Dominican Republic rather than Puerto Rico. As I started digging into its history I didn’t find much about Roncoco, but I did find a LOT of drama, which I dig into in this episode. This is hands-down the wildest bottle to come out of Grandma's collection so far. A bottle of what should be a deep red port, but that's now perfectly clear!
