In this episode, I continue a multipart series in which I adapt some of the lesson plans I used as I taught the Catholic faith for 30 years. I’m not here to convert anyone. I’m just sharing my stories. In this episode, we try to understand how Scripture was created from oral traditions. We engage in an exercise where we write some Scripture of our own.Links of Interest for this episodeNew American Standard Bible (NASB) on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_American_Standard_BibleThomas Merton on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_MertonThe Prayer of Thomas Merton: https://reflections.yale.edu/article/seize-day-vocation-calling-work/merton-prayerGenesis 3:9 (NASB): https://bible.usccb.org/bible/genesis/3?9Exodus 3:4 (NASB): https://bible.usccb.org/bible/exodus/3?41 Kings 19:11-18 (NASB): https://bible.usccb.org/bible/1kings/19?11Hebrews 1:1-3 (NASB): https://bible.usccb.org/bible/hebrews/1Ephesians 1:8-10 (NASB): https://bible.usccb.org/bible/ephesians/1?8Epistles on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Epistle#New_Testament_epistles1 Thessalonians 2:13 (NASB): https://bible.usccb.org/bible/1thessalonians/2?132 Peter 1:19-21 (NASB): https://bible.usccb.org/bible/2peter/1?192 Timothy 3:14-17 (NASB): https://bible.usccb.org/bible/2timothy/3?14General reference links for this series.List of episodes of this podcast dealing with religion: https://contemplating-life.com/blog/category/religion/RCIA/OCIA on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Order_of_Christian_Initiation_of_AdultsNew American Standard Bible (NASB) at the US Conference of Catholic Bishops: https://bible.usccb.org/bibleBible Gateway (multiple translations available): https://www.biblegateway.com/Catechism of the Catholic Church on Vatican website: https://www.vatican.va/archive/ENG0015/_INDEX.HTMDan McClellan on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@maklelanDan McClellan on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/danmcclellann“Data over Dogma” podcast on YouTube: https://www.youtube.com/@dataoverdogmaFor more episodes: https://contemplating-life.com/Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/contemplatinglifeWhere to listen to this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/contemplatinglifeYouTube playlist of this and all other episodes: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFFRYfZfNjHL8bFCmGDOBvEiRbzUiiHpq

When I began the podcast, I mentioned that one of the topics I was going to cover was entertainment. This week we began a three-part series where I review all 10 films nominated for Best Picture Oscars. We will cover 4 films this week and three films each of the next two weeks. We start with “Avatar: Way of the Water”, “Top Gun: Maverick”, “Elvis”, and “Everything Everywhere All at Once”.

In this episode, I bemoan the lack of new or innovative content on broadcast TV based on the offerings of this new fall season. We also take a statistical look at the recent Emmy awards and notice that the few broadcast and basic cable shows nominated did not earn any wins. AppleTV+ and other streaming services dominated the landscape. Although all of my podcasts are listenable, this one includes charts and spreadsheets that you may want to view on the YouTube version.Links of Interest for this episodeNote: Normally, I would provide links to every TV show mentioned, but this link list would be massive. While proofreading my previous episode, I realized the theological point I was making was also a commentary on the political divisiveness we find in our country today. Here are my thoughts regarding ways that the teachings of St. Paul in his first letter to the Corinthians delivered a poignant message that is applicable to our secular society today. You don’t have to be a Christian to appreciate the wisdom of his message. In this episode, I depart from my original plans to continue turning my old Scripture lessons into podcast episodes. I’ve been going through old audiocassettes and downloading them to my computer, and I found some long-lost lectures that were key to my faith journey as a foundation of the lessons taught in the Catholic Church for 30 years. I hope to return to presenting more of those lessons and upcoming episodes soon.Links of Interest for this episodeFr. This episode is the final installment in a four-part series on Catholic Tradition. When I used to teach this lesson, it included a tour of the church. While I can’t do that with you physically, I want to try to cover the same material with you. We'll discuss in more detail what you can expect to find in a Catholic Church, including an overview of the items the priest uses during Mass, as well as a discussion of priestly vestments. We will wrap up with a few words about other Catholic traditions.Links of Interest for this episodeHandout materials for this lesson: https://www.patreon.com/posts/130708591Church Tabernacle on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Church_tabernacleSts. This rather lengthy episode wraps up the reviews of most of the Oscar-nominated films for this year. I’m sorry I didn’t have time to do a better job but I was out of commission with the flu for about 10 days and just didn’t have time to do the kind of job I usually do. The Oscars will be presented Sunday, March 2 on ABC-TV and I wanted to get this episode out before the awards were presented.Links of InterestThe 97th Academy awards on Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/97th_Academy_AwardsYouTube video about special-effects in “Conclave”: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MHX537eqj-MYouTube video about writing certain types of characters: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=w3VJsftZfcY&t=619sFor more episodes: https://contemplating-life.com/Support us on Patreon: https://www.patreon.com/contemplatinglifeWhere to listen to this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/contemplatinglifeYouTube playlist of this and all other episodes: https://youtube.com/playlist?list=PLFFRYfZfNjHL8bFCmGDOBvEiRbzUiiHpq
