Description

There are people who understand depression and anxiety on a personal level and there are people who understand depression and anxiety on a medical level. There are relatively few people who understand both, and I’m one of them. As a clinical psychologist I have a doctorate degree and thousands of hours of professional experience providing treatment for mood and anxiety disorders. I also have 39 years of personal experience managing mood and anxiety disorders as I myself deal with these struggles. This podcast is my attempt to synthesize my personal knowledge with my professional knowledge. Support this podcast: https://podcasters.spotify.com/pod/show/scott-eilers/support

Trying to replace negative thoughts with positive ones rarely works for your mental wellbeing. Your brain perceives threat and warns you by replaying those thoughts. Fighting this impulse makes your mind cling tighter. I'm laying out an effective retraining technique. No more fruitless thought struggles - you'll gain control. Life doesn't always make sense, not all pain has a purpose - and this reality can hurt. This frustrated me for years. While not all pain leads to something positive, I want to offer a perspective that can help you avoid falling into deeper levels of despair. I call this technique, 'The Web.' There's an epidemic of unhelpful responses when someone opens up about their struggles. My take: Most well-meaning people inadvertently make things worse because they simply don't know what to say. When we see loved ones suffering, it triggers distress in us too. Our instinct is to quickly make their pain go away, for our sake as much as theirs. But rushing them through emotions or invalidating their fexelings creates isolation. I want to look at four common unhelpful responses, and give you some new tools to use. These tools also apply to your self-talk - be your own supportive friend. You might be (accidentally, unknowingly, unintentionally) making your life worse in a number of ways. One way is your (internal and implicit) criteria for what is considered a "good day." Your requirements for defining a good day might be ruining your life. But you can modify these "checkboxes," and I'm going to help you do that. Insecurity is a universal human experience, not a personal failing. Most coping methods actually reinforce insecurities rather than resolving them. Embracing insecurities as identity reinforces negative thoughts. Denying weaknesses leads to reality harshly exposing them. Overcompensating through impression management is exhausting. I'll show you how to overcome insecurity through incremental self-improvement. Facing insecurities through gradual exposure therapy diminishes their power. Psychological testing is not a perfect science by any means - it can have many barriers to entry including cost, access, and availability. But self-diagnosis is not the answer! This episode unpacks the very real concerns with self-diagnosis. Even when struggling to access professional care, firmly holding self-assigned labels carries risks. Proper differential diagnosis matters enormously for effective treatment. I don't disparage investigating to understand oneself better. But view potential self-diagnoses as hypotheses requiring rigorous vetting. I'm going to give you some guidelines for doing that. Most think acceptance means settling for misery. That's not true. Acceptance empowers you to change what matters. It acknowledges some pain is unavoidable - but suffering is optional. Life has inherent discomforts we cannot control - that's "pain." Trying to force away that pain often backfires, causing more issues. That's "suffering." Radical acceptance separates the two categories. This video teaches evaluating life's pains objectively. Some are changeable with effort. Others aren't worth the cost of change. Radical acceptance means tolerating unchangeables, focusing energy on high-impact areas instead of fruitless struggles. It's life-changing. Emotions are not light switches. You cannot simply turn them on or off just because you (or somebody) would like to. Being told (or telling others) to calm down, cheer up, or get over it is dismissive and unhelpful. There is no direct mechanism for selecting your emotions. The biggest problem is that this type of command is outcome based - become x new emotion now. But without a process for changing your emotions you may do more harm to your current emotional state. I'm sharing with you that process here. Not all negative thoughts are bad. But constantly thinking about negative things can lead to a downward cycle psychology calls rumination. Rumination is when we have certain thoughts, memories, or ideas, that get stuck in our brain. And trying to relax, unwind, or think about something else can simply make the thought more ingrained. There's a reason for this, and it's the reason why doing nothing is actually dangerous for rumination. Organizing your life around what's most important to you might be inadvertently sabotaging your life. People with mental health struggles need to go deeper and determine what is most foundational in their life - not necessarily what is most important to them. The distinction is critical. The thing that is most foundational is the thing that will cause total system failure. For me, that thing is managing my life around my mental health goals. I'm going to show you exactly how I do that with a tool called with Sunsama. https://bit.ly/DrScottSunsama (affiliate link) Get Practical tools for navigating life with depression and anxiety, delivered weekly. https://mailchi.mp/90ccaf44c876/self-hope-psychology My book: For When Everything is Burning https://bit.ly/forwheneverythingisburning The app I use to learn core principles from thousands of nonfiction books in minutes http://shortform.com/drscott (affiliate link) Connect with me on TikTok: https://www.tiktok.com/@dr.scott.eilers Therapy with me (Iowa residents only) http://www.northstarpsychcenter.com/ Work with me (Non-Iowa residents) http://www.drscotteilers.com/ Disclaimer: This content is not intended to be a replacement for receiving treatment. This is basically saying "you will feel just as bad, if not worse". Then what is the point? If the only thing I can hope is to fight much harder to feel worse, then I do not see the point in even trying.
