Should podcasters ‘fake it until they’ve made it’?Do you subscribe to the “fake it till you make it” philosophy? In the podcasting industry, this mindset might actually limit your growth. As an experienced podcasting consultant, I want to challenge this belief and explore the potential setbacks it may bring. Imposter syndrome is a common struggle among podcasters. Embracing the “fake it till you make it” approach can inadvertently intensify these feelings. Instead of appreciating your current stage, you might undermine it, hindering your progress as a host, interviewer, or editor. However, this critique is not aimed at demonizing the concept of 'faking it.' Instead, it serves as an opportunity to introduce viable alternatives. The problem of podcasters’ unrealistic expectationsOne critical aspect to address is the unrealistic expectations and burnout resulting from pressure to match the quality and output of larger teams. Many podcasters, especially those just starting, are one-person ‘band’. Comparing your work to a team of five is unrealistic and counterproductive. Furthermore, there are common misconceptions about investing in equipment. A common belief is that a significant investment in fancy equipment equals a higher podcast quality- admit it, you’re often looking at the popular Shure sm7b, right? However, that money might be better spent elsewhere, such as on paid ads to grow your show or hiring a podcast consultant to help you develop a successful strategy. Creating diverse content is essential for connecting with different audience segments. Not every episode needs to be a blockbuster. Recognizing that different episodes serve different purposes and will resonate differently with your audience is crucial for sustainable content creation. The key is fostering authenticity, cultivating gratitude for every learning opportunity, and embracing your unique podcasting journey. Instead of subscribing to the “fake it till you make it” approach, consider channeling your future successful self. Envision what success looks like for you and take steps towards that vision while appreciating your current stage. Believe that you are worthy of podcast success at every stage of your journey. Start a notebook of achievements and refer back to it when self-doubt creeps in. Accept that you are worthy of taking up space in your current state. Create content that feels authentic and meet your audience where they are. Remember to question the “why” behind your goals to ensure they align with your authentic desires. Remember, you don’t need to wait for significant wins to celebrate. Celebrate every achievement, no matter how small. Success in podcasting, as in any other field, is a journey. Embrace your unique path and let go of the “fake it till you make it” mantra. Instead, channel your ‘most successful future self’ and keep creating content that moves you forward. Your future successful self is waiting for you. Resources mentioned in this episode:Listen to my “5 Ways a Podcast can...
How Podcasters Can Create Memorable Interviews and Shareable ContentPodcasting is an art that can be mastered with the right skills, insights, and creativity. Today, we delve into an exciting podcast episode featuring Kendall Breitman, a seasoned reporter who’s worked in production for news outlets such as Bloomberg, NCB and Politico. Kendall reveals her secrets to conducting captivating interviews and creating ‘binge-worthy’ podcast content.Creating a Comfortable EnvironmentBreitman begins the conversation by introducing the concept of a 'green room conversation.' This term originates from the television industry, where guests would have a pre-show conversation to build rapport and set the tone for the upcoming interview. She advocates for a similar approach in podcasting, emphasizing the need to foster a comfortable environment before the actual interview begins. This strategy enables guests to relax, thus leading to more natural and authentic conversations. As a podcast host, your energy and tone can significantly influence the interview outcome. Therefore, it is essential to exude the right vibes and foster a sense of connection with your guests.Embracing a Conversational Interview StyleAbandoning rigid scripts and adopting a more conversational approach to interviews is another powerful tactic shared by Breitman. Rather than sticking to a long list of questions, having three to five bullet points can guide the conversation more organically.Asking questions about your guests' emotions can create a deeper connection between you, your guest, and your audience. Breitman suggests asking follow-up questions that the listeners would want to know, effectively making the host a proxy for the audience's curiosity. This approach can significantly enhance the audience's engagement and overall listening experience.Takeaways from the episode:(0:00:00) - Introduction of the importance of pre-interview "green room conversation" for building rapport with guests.(0:08:36) - Discussion on the benefits of a conversational approach to interviews, emphasizing flexibility over rigid scripts.(0:10:15) - Insight on unique tactics to evoke guests' emotions and build a personal bond with the audience.(0:12:40) - The revelation of Kendall's guilty pleasure - 90 Day Fiance podcasts - and how they inspire her content creation.(0:16:07) - Exploration of the idea of making podcast content 'binge-worthy' and strategies to achieve this.(0:21:45) - Discussion on creating suspense in an episode and keeping listeners on edge.(0:25:12) - Exploration of the importance of being honest with yourself and your audience when an interview isn't going as planned.(0:27:35) - Discussion on the power of humor and storytelling in making podcast content more 'binge-worthy'.(0:34:57) - Insight on the best ways to reach out to guests and the significance of pre-interview "green room conversation".Resources mentioned in this episode:Listen to my “5 Ways a Podcast can Boost Your Business” $0 audio training?

Mastering the Art of Podcast Growth: Secrets to Extraordinary Success during SabbaticalsA sabbatical - an extended break or hiatus - is a concept most of us are familiar with. In academia, it's a well-established practice. In the corporate world, it's gaining recognition. But have you ever thought about taking a sabbatical from your podcast? In this podcast episode, I’m sharing my recent experience of taking a 5-week sabbatical from my podcast and business. I’ll be updating you on the unexpected journey, the lessons learned, and tips for other podcasters considering a break. I’ll also break down how I prepared for my time away, and how I took my knowledge in content strategy and listener behavior to craft a plan that worked for my podcast while I was gone. Embarking on a Podcast SabbaticalMy sabbatical was an opportunity to reconnect with myself, friends and family, taking time from the week-to-week rut of publishing podcast content, but also to think bigger picture about what truly lights me up.By scaling back on social media and emails, I’ve opted for a "post and ghost" strategy, expecting it to be a viable option to provide educational content to my audience while I was away. However, this tactic confirmed what I expected, causing a noticeable decrease in my social media reach, especially on Instagram. Engagement matters, and if you're planning a sabbatical, consider how you'll maintain audience interaction- in my case, Instagram will be off the books. The Unexpected Surge in Podcast PopularityWhile away, I’ve noticed something unusual. My podcast downloads surged by a staggering 1200% over the month, catapulting The Podcast Space into the top 15 Marketing charts in Portugal and Sweden. Initially, I’ve suspected bot activity but realized that this unexpected popularity had more to it - at least in the organic aspect of it. The engagement on Spotify and Apple Podcasts also grew, and I’ve received several positive messages from listeners, revealing that the content was being appreciated and consumed heavily even during my absence. My sabbatical proved that taking a break doesn't necessarily mean losing your audience or your business momentum. Instead, it can result in unexpected benefits, like a surprising surge in podcast popularity or listener appreciation.Planning for a Podcast SabbaticalA sabbatical doesn't have to be an all-or-nothing proposition. There are three types of sabbaticals: one where you do absolutely nothing, one where you focus on learning something new, and a hybrid of both.During my break, I chose the hybrid approach, taking the time to upskill by reading and learning new things, speaking a few different languages (I’m multilingual after all) while also disconnecting from work. The Aftermath of a Podcast SabbaticalIn conclusion, a podcast sabbatical, when planned and executed correctly, can be a beneficial move. Not only can it provide the much-needed break for the host, but it can also lead to unexpected growth and engagement for the podcast. If you're considering a sabbatical, this podcast episode is a must-listen, packed with practical insights, personal experiences, and invaluable tips to ensure your podcast doesn't just survive your break, but thrives.Full resources mentioned in this episode: Listen to my “5 Ways a Podcast can Boost Your Business” $0 audio training?https://bit.ly/3ERdGXP
What If You Run Out of Things to Say on Your Podcast? The final installment of the Summer Spark Series delves into a fear that many of us have at some point: running out of things to say on our podcasts. Yes, it's a daunting thought, but don't worry – I've got your back! Let's tackle this fear head-on and explore some practical strategies to ensure you never run out of podcasting goodness. These are tips I’ve gathered over the past 10 years, as I’ve worked with almost 100 podcasters and worked through the true issues that lay below. How to never run out of things to say on your podcastStay Curious: Never assume that your audience already knows everything about a topic or that they don't want to hear more. Always be curious and explore various angles to keep your content fresh and engaging.Brain Dumping: Discover the power of brain dumping to test out different podcast ideas quickly and effectively. I discuss how this technique can be a game-changer when it comes to finding compelling topics.Listen to Your Audience: Pay attention to what's happening around you and what your audience is talking about. I share a personal experience of creating an episode based on solving a specific problem my podcast community was facing.Get Your Community Involved: You don't have to come up with all the ideas on your own. Welcome to the very first episode of our Summer Spark series! For the upcoming 5 episodes, we’ll explore new perspectives and practical tips to reframe how you view your podcast, and better, more efficient ways to utilize your show to grow your small business.Launching a podcast is an exciting endeavor, and as hosts, we all want it to be successful. However, the definition of success can vary greatly from one podcaster to another. Many of us fall into the trap of equating success with the number of downloads we receive, or the social status of our guests. But let me tell you, that's just one part of the equation.Podcasters with more than 10 episodes are already successfulIf you've been podcasting for over six months, congratulations! You're already ahead of about 70% of podcast hosts who give up before even reaching episode 10. Take a moment to reflect on why you started your podcast in the first place. Forget the download numbers for now; ask yourself if your podcast is achieving what you wanted it to.Podcasting doesn’t need to be monetizedMaybe you're using your podcast as a testing ground to write your book or exploring your passion for gardening. If so, measuring its success based on downloads alone doesn't do it justice. Are you having meaningful conversations with the people you wanted to reach? Has podcasting motivated you to publish content more consistently?Remember, having a podcast is a significant achievement in itself. It takes courage to put yourself out there on the internet, and it requires discipline to build both a podcast and an online brand. Embrace the fact that you're providing value to your listeners and elevating your brand in a way that many professionals without an online presence miss out on.Let's stop obsessing over monetizing our podcasts if it's not the primary aim. If you genuinely enjoy podcasting as a hobby and don't want to compromise, then don't. Success is about aligning your podcast with your original intentions and finding fulfillment in the journey. As you evaluate your podcasting journey this week, I hope this reminder has helped you redefine what success means for you and your show. Keep going, keep creating, and keep sparking that summer inspiration!Resources mentioned in this episode:Listen to my “5 Ways a Podcast can Boost Your Business” $0 audio training?https://bit.ly/3ERdGXPFull show notes, links and resources in our website: www.thepodcastspace.com/podcast/29-how-to-determine-if-your-podcast-is-successful-summer-spark-seriesFeeling stuck? The first step to a successful podcast journey is understanding your listeners. From thinking that people don’t want to hear from you, to making intros that make your listeners skip the episode, to creating hours-long content that gets heard by one because you’ve never looked at your analytics, there is so much that podcast hosts never considered and that will make or break the podcast experience. This episode will cover 10 secrets that you need to know about listeners in order to make podcast decisions that will help grow your business. Ready?Understanding when to follow-through, and when you can break promises you made to listenersYou can even break a promise to your listeners and still maintain their support, as long as you remain authentic and true to your core promise. It’s not about the medium or specifics through which you deliver your promised, but the fact that you do deliver on the what.Listeners are human after all, and they’re reasonable - being honest and truthful about your circumstances will sometimes further your relationship with them, as it shows a more vulnerable side of you!The Impact of Show Notes on DownloadsShow notes can be a tricky aspect of podcasting. While detailed show notes may provide a thorough understanding of the episode's content, I believe that they may also decrease the number of downloads, as listeners might opt to read rather than listen. By no means I’m saying that you should forgo accessibility by not offering transcripts or closed captioning), but you should understand that doing show notes that are too thorough will impact listener behavior.A single superfan can bring you a small crowd of listeners - for free!A single superfan can be a catalyst for your podcast's growth. Remember that as you’re podcasting, your content is helping a single person and while they may at some point ‘graduate’ from your content, they didn’t forget about you. Podcast listeners WILL buy from you - when they’re readyEdison Podcast Metrics measured podcast listener habits in 2020, and they found that weekly US listeners 34% bought products and services advertised in podcasts. In 2023 that number rose to 46%, which is highly encouraging when you’re a business owner using your podcast as a business tool!Only 10-20% of your listeners will actually reach out online It’s a shocking truth, but it’s a low number that most hosts struggle with too! Podcast listeners truly need a strong incentive to reach out. If you’re skeptical, just think about the amount of podcasts that you consume every single week, and the amount of times you actually reached out to the podcast’s host - you’ll likely believe me now!
