Please enjoy!WHERE TO GO WHEN You Want To Throw A Party By The River…If you need an awesome and very "Asheville" venue to host a party at, I want to strongly suggest Wrong Way River Lodge & Cabins located down on Amboy Road, along the French Broad River. The space is very nice, with a large porch and patio, a beautiful view of and easy access to the river walk, as well as a room for tables, chairs, food and dancing, and a small warming-up-and-keeping-cold kitchenette. Dawn & I celebrated our 20th anniversary there together with friends and fam from out of town, some of whom stayed in the cabins and reported to us that they are very nice inside. Wrong Way allows outside food, so we had our party catered by our friends at New Stock Pantry, who laid out an amazing charcuterie board, as well as some other snacks for our guests. The owner of Wrong Way, Shelton, was a pleasure to work with and we had a very nice experience all around! High recommends for both Wrong Way & New Stock!WERE TO GO WHEN WHEN you want to party with a preroll & some pie… Dawn & I recently drove to Garden Party on Haywood Road, where there was a pop-up featuring Chef Camille Cogswell's Walnut Family Bakery. We bought some super delicious pie, and I got a sweet little preroll to smoke at home.Garden Party is a really fun shop, and I love what they're doing there, including their support for, and printed materials about, Equity Initiatives. To learn more, you can visit their website. It seems like Garden Party hosts fun food & art pop-ups regularly, so I recommend following them on social media to see what they’ve got going on next!WHERE TO GO WHEN you want deep, comforting, flavorful and very satisfying Mexican and Latin fare right in the middle of downtown… I've been bringing my Asheville Food Tours into Mountain Madre Asheville lately, as well as grabbing lunch there with the other tour guides. The tour guests will often name the empanadas as their favorite bite of the tour, and the guides love them too! Chef Alejandra really knows how to pack a lot of flavor into an empanada and she switches-up the flavors regularly. They also come with a creme sauce that is to die for. The last time I went for lunch, we also shared the enchiladas. Delicious! And very filling. There's lots of seating, including a lovely patio, the service is fast and friendly, and the bar specializes in tequila and mescal drinks, for which they are quite well known. Recommended.ASHEVILLE FOOD TOURS: Did you know that you can book a private tour of downtown Asheville with me for as few as 2 and as many as… oh, let’s say 100… people? True stories, Yo. If you want to have a classic deli counter sandwich experience in downtown Asheville, head on over to The Asheville Forager grocery store and deli on Wall Street! I went recently with my fellow tour guides from Asheville Food Tours just to check it out, and we ended up getting a TON of food in the form of a full-sized Italian grinder (it was literally as long as my forearm!), a 1/2-sized "Bunkum" (it was still huge) and their enormous Pastrami Rueben. These sandwiches were AWESOME! The Italian took me straight back in time, to my teens and twenties living, working, and attending college in Boston, Massachusetts. It was a very authentic representation of the kind of food offered by the delis and restaurants that I grew up with in New England. The Rueben was outstanding. Epic in proportions, perfect in execution and overflowing with meat and flavor! I was too full to try Sarah's Bunkum grinder, but it looked and sounded just as good as the other two, and she crushed it. The atmosphere is lovely, the setting is clean and bright with fun decorative details, and the grocery store is filling up with excellent local, regional, national and international food options for us! Super high recommends for these sandwiches, and for the whole experience. Thanks, Asheville Forager! You're a very welcome addition to downtown!NEIGHBORHOOD JAM: We did one of our favorite things last week, and visited our neighborhood pizza place, All Souls Pizza on Clingman Ave in the River Arts District, where we got our three standard go-to items: The Honey pizza, with pepperoni, tomato sauce, peperoncini, mozzarella, and local honey, along with the large Bibb Lettuce Salad with radishes and herb vinaigrette, and two soft-serve cones! We do this exact same routine at least once a month and it brings us a lot of joy and comfort! We love the food and the staff and owners of All Souls. Chef Brendan and his crew are making some of the best food in town, and have been for many years! And, yes, my soft-serve was dangerously droopy, but I attacked it with all the speed and precision I could muster, and got it taken care of without losing a drop! 🙂FANCY BURGERS: Yes, no big surprise, we returned to Mother on the South Slope for dinner, where we enjoyed another outstanding meal. We shared the house bread, a panzanella salad, and one if their insanely delicious and very popular lamb burgers. We were seated at the bar, and I must have seen a dozen burgers come out of the kitchen that night! Word is out about this restaurant, and this burger. It's big and juicy and savory and just melts in your mouth. They dress it with whipped feta, harissa aioli, pickled fennel and local greens. It's in my top five favorite burgers right now, and in my top two "fancy burgers," along with Table. Spendy, yes, but worth the splurge every once in a while in my opinion, and the opinion of a dozen other people that night at least! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️EATING SKULLS: If you're like me, and you think that eating chocolate skulls is always appropriate, The Chocolate Fetish, located on Haywood Street in Downtown Asheville has their Halloween stuff out already! But if you’re thinking, “Well it’s not even September yet!” You’re right, they’ve got a big jump on Halloween, and if that upsets you, please ignore the fact that they also have their chocolate turkeys out for Thanksgiving already! Here’s how I feel: I like shapes. I like chocolate, and I’ll eat turkey-shaped piece of chocolate any time of year!NEW FAVE RIBS: We got some insanely delicious char sui ribs from Wildwood Still on a food tour recently. So flavorful and cooked to come right off the bone. Chef Austin and his crew are kicking out some of my favorite jams in Asheville these days, and these ribs are now my new faves. This is the tour-sized portion. A regular order has four ribs. I recommend both the restaurant *and* coming on a tour with me or Sarah and Asheville Food Tours!— end — Get full access to Stu Helm: Food Fan at stuhelmfoodfan.substack.com/subscribe

Thanks To Deb & All The Listeners and WPVM 103.7fm!THE NEWSLETTERAsheville’s food scene is amazing, and like the universe, it is ever-expanding, which is awesome, but creates a dilemma for locals and visitors alike: Where to eat? With so many choices it can be overwhelming! Here are some recommendations…THE MARKET PLACE: Where to eat when you want a special experience. My wife and I were both born in July, and we celebrated with a wonderful meal at one of the best restaurants in the whole dang country, The Market Place, where every bite, from the local meats and cheese board to the Pavlova for dessert! The meat & cheese board was huge, and at first we were, like, "let's take half home," but nope! We pretty much crushed it. It was too good not to!Next we got the tuna crudo with a very mild and delicious aji amarillo sauce, plus plums, purple potato chips, benne seeds, coriander, and olive oil. Super fantastically yummy! I could have eaten 10 more plates of it.For our entree, we got the pork coppa steak, aka slow roasted cheshire farm pork with Mexican-style street corn, coriander crema, blistered shishitos & spicy tomato relish. It was great, especially the street corn & crema, which I could eat by the bucketful. We were stuffed by the end of the entree, but what could a little ol' pavlova hurt? Oooftah! It was huge, but light & airy, and the cold sharp fruit sorbet contrasted perfectly with the super-sweet & crunchy meringue. It was the best pavlova I've ever had & I'll probably have a pavlova-ian response whenever I think about from now on! Ha! Sorry. Anyhoo, this meal was excellent all around, including food, drinks, service & atmosphere! It's a large and very lovely space with a lot of diverse seating. Thanks, Chef Dissen and crew! Y'all are doing great things and we appreciate you! ❤HAPPY BELLY FOOD TRUCK: Where to eat when you want to treat yourself to an awesome decadent smash burger! One Sunday morning in July I received a text from my friend Dave, who owns The Happy Belly Food Truck Company inviting me to come grab a free burger for my birthday. I was very very excited by that invitation and quickly beat it on down to the Hi-Wire Brewing RAD Beer Garden on Lyman Street, where I found the truck, ordered the deluxe slap burger, and enjoyed it to the absolute max!!!The only word for Dave's burgers is "gah." It's a five-gah burger. Huge, messy, cooked perfectly & absolutely packed with flavor! The deluxe has dressed LTO, American cheese & happy belly sauce. I added caramelized onions, aaand totally CRUSHED it. I stuffed the entire thing into my tiny body, commenting to Dawn the whole time. "Good lord, that's a tasty burger." "Fuuuuhhhhck me." And of course, "Gah." If you like big, messy, decadent, indulgent & super duper delicious smash burgers, I highly recommend this one! Thanks, Dave, you're the best, Mang! ❤️❤️❤️AY CARAMBA! Where to eat when you want to real Mexican food.Y'all, I did something super fun that I haven't done in a while: I went on an Asheville Multicultural tasting with my good friend Lucho! We drove out see Chef Enrique at Ay Caramba Mexican Grill in Leicester, where we sampled a bunch of delicious Mexican & Meximerican foods! Chef Enrique Pérez (L) is from Jalisco, Mexico and is a graduate of the Centro Integral De Gastronomía in La Piedad, Michoacán. To say that I feel very lucky to be able to eat this chef's food way up here in Asheville, WNC would an understatement! It’s always a pleasure to see him, and this time I had the extreme honor of meeting Don Federico (R), who is the patriarch of what might be Asheville's biggest family-owned restaurant dynasty. Of course the food was amazing, as always from this Chef! The highlight of the tasting was definitely the whole fish with shrimp and octopus, or "mojarra con mariscos y salsa cucaracha" which was smothered in a deep red spicy sauce. It was truly spectacular! The octopus was cooked perfectly and was very tender, and likewise, the shrimps were also cooked just right, as was the fish itself, which was white, and chunky/flakey. Everything was offset by the sliced avocado and other fresh crispy vegetables and rice. It had a "wow-factor" for sure, and is a superstar dish in my opinion. Lucho and I both enjoyed the very authentic Mexican style street tacos (above), and I also really loved a dish that I was told is not a Mexican thing, but is on the menu, because "Americans like a lot of melted cheese!" 😂😂😂 It was bubbling when it came out and was essentially a piping hot cauldron of cheese and crumbled up house made chorizo with a little bit of salsa fresca on top. I called it a "deconstructed Mexican cheeseburger," and Lucho did not disagree.Chef said he thought I might like it, and I felt seen. So, folks, whether you want sone of THE most authentic Mexican food in Asheville, or some more Americanized fare, Ay Caramba and Chef Enrique have you covered. Super nice and friendly people, really great food! Thanks, Chef, Don and Lucho for another fun and filling Multicultural adventure! 🙏❤️🌮ASHEVILLE FOOD TOURS: Experience Asheville the way that I do: THROUGH FOOD! We popped into a cool little shop called On Your Bike, where we got some very delicious pastries to bring home. We can't wait to go back to try more!Marshall is so cute and charming, and is making its come back for sure. If you can get out there, please try On Your Bike! While there, we also stopped into MAL'S bar because we heard they serve hot dogs, and we had heard right! Even though I don't drink anymore, a good old fashioned hot dog-serving dive bar still feels like home to me, and Mal's sure did fit that bill! Just swap my beer for a root beer, and I'm allll good. This hot dog was also all good! A Nathan's Famous, heated up on rollers, and served on a basic trashy white bun. I added sriracha mayo from the condiment basket and it was perfection! Thanks, Mal's! And folks, please be sure to pay a visit to Mal's bar the next time you're in Marshall, grab a dog, and a beer of some kind, and maybe even sign up for one of their arm wrestling competitions! 💪We visited as many little shops and restaurants in Marshall as we could squeeze in, including Zuma Coffee, where we stopped for cortados, a tiny key lime pie, and a cookie, all delicious! We also went to Zadie’s, where Dawn had a drink and we shared a refreshing dish of chickpea and cauliflower salad. On the way out of town we stopped into Madison Natural Foods to grab a few groceries to bring back to Asheville. This trip to Marshall was too short, and we didn't get to do all the things, eat all the food, or go to all the places we wanted to, so we can't wait to go back for an overnight stay at Old Marshall Jail Hotel so that we can spend more time enjoying this little gem of a town. Please visit Downtown Marshall, NC if you can, and show them some love. ❤️❤️❤️LATIN LUNCH: Thank you to The Line Cook Perspective for posting about La Tropical ice cream, "A little piece of Mexico in Asheville," on Weaverville Road. We were out that way for some other reason and recognized this place from Facebook, so we stopped in and wow! It's a wonderland of frozen treats from the simple to the extreme! You have to check out their social media and web site to get the full effect of the ice creamy insanity.I opted for one of their all natural strawberries & cream popsicles and loved it. It took me back to my days of living in Chicago, where the popsicle vendors would ride their bikes through my neighborhood, and we'd wave them down for coconut, pineapple, mango, cinnamon, and horchata flavored popsicles. Good times. Super high recommends for La Tropical! Tons of choices, bright, fun colorful atmosphere, and very nice people! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️When my mom heard about La Tropical Ice Cream on Weaverville Road she wanted to go, so we just kind of randomly picked Tienda El Quetzal, to have lunch at first, because it's right across the street from the ice cream shop. Wow! We were so impressed with our food, and with the whole experience! We were greeted warmly by the folks at the counter, who answered our questions and recommended the daily special of "guisado de res," or beef stew, and these two New Englanders are always down for beef stew! We claimed one of the 4 or 5 tables, and browsed the Latin goods and groceries in the very cute convenient store while we waited for our food. My mom got a tamarind soda pop for us to share, and when the food arrived, we sat back down. The stew was delicious! It had large chunks of tender beef that were cooked perfectly and pulled right apart with just a fork, no knife needed. The sauce was flavorful, and savory, though very mild in terms of the heat. It was not much different than my Canadian grandmother's beef stew, and both my mom and I loved it! Super high recommends for Tienda El Quetzal! I'm looking forward to going back, trying more of the menu, and picking up some Latin groceries to bring home.BLACK MOUNTAIN - Dawn and I took a little drive out to the Town of Black Mountain not long ago, and before anything else, we stopped into a new cafe / bakery called Recess Coffee, where we got coffee, a cookie, and a very unique and delicious little miniature quiche. It had a wonderful, buttery, layered crust, and was very hearty and satisfying! Recommend. After our brief stop for breakfast at Recess, we went to Catawba Falls in Old Fort for a walk up the trail and back, and then we returned to the Town of Black Mountain and paid a visit to the new Hell or High Water Restaurant, which is part of the Foothills Local Meats complex, where we heard that one of our favorite people, Chef Eric Morris is the executive chef! We didn't see Chef Eric, but we enjoyed a few dishes from his menu! We stared with the Stone Fruit Salad w/ romaine, tarragon, almonds, ricotta and of course stone fruit. It was cool, crunchy, tasty and refreshing after a hot day of walking. We also got the Low Country Mussels which were just as described, with new potatoes, corn, and bay seasoning, along with the mussels in a very nice broth and a side of bread. We rounded out our visit with an order of the Tortellini with ricotta and sausage, tomato, and anise hyssop, again in a very nice broth.I admit that I don't know what some of those ingredients are, but it was great! I wanted to up-end the bowl and pour the broth directly into my mouth when the torts were gone! Everything was delish and we left feeling full and happy, although there's always room for Dairy King on the way out of Black Mountain, so we stopped in and a classic poop-emoji swirl of chocolate soft serve on a cake-cone. Yay! This is one of my favorite towns in WNC, and if I could live there, I probably would! It just keeps getting cooler. ❤️❤️❤️ASHEVILLE FOOD TOURS: Experience Asheville the way that I do: THROUGH FOOD! Our culinary team starts their mornings early, chopping, stirring, baking, and seasoning with love. Whether it's comfort food classics or seasonal favorites, they turn ingredients into impact. We're grateful to serve alongside these incredible people, who show up every day with aprons on and hearts wide open. 💛”DREAMERS PRT 1: I’ve talked about this dream dish twice on the radio show, even though I’ve only ever had it on Food Tours. The picture below shows a tour-sized bite, the actual dish is much larger, but large or small, this dish is a dream come true. And I mean that literally. Chef Mike Reppert from Blackbird Restaurant had a dream one night about a very abstract, five-foot tall vegetarian dish, and when he woke up, he started working on it! It took hime four days, but he perfected it, and I mean that it is perfect! One the menu, it’s called Goat Cheese Corn Pie, and while it’s not five feet tall, it is a dream to eat! It’s essentially a very savory, comforting, and delicious stack of roasted corn, goat cheese, Swiss chard, and mushrooms atop a very satisfyingly umami-ish pecan crust, with spinach cream and tomato white wine sauce. It has a “gah factor” of 10 out of 10, and I can recommend it highly enough.DREAMERS PRT 2: One day, Paddy and I went to the SWAsheville food court downtown, where I ordered some chicken tenders from Buxton Chicken Palace, and a single scoop of salted caramel ice cream from The Hop Ice Cream with a waffle cone on the side, and finally lived a dream that I've had for years! How was it? FRICKIN' GREAT! I can't wait to do it again. For this delicious treat you will need the following: 1 order of chicken tenders from Buxton Chicken Palace. 1 scoop of salted caramel ice cream and 1 waffle cone from The Hop Ice CreamTo assemble, place three chicken tenders into the waffle cone, fill the rest of the way with ice cream, and top with another tender or two.Tuck in and enjoy! I lived this dream and so can you, only at the SWAsheville food hall in downtown Asheville. I can't wait to do it again soon! 😍😍😍PIZZA OF THE MONTH CLUB! He hasn't officially announced it yet, but Chef Drew Peterson from Asheville Pizza South (soon to be Beer City Pizza) is going to turn his Pizza of the Month into a Pizza of the Month CLUB, and since I've only missed one month in two years, I feel like I'm already an honorary member! I'll let him explain the Pizza of the Month Club himself when he's ready, but in the meantime, this month's pizza is frickin' awesome, and my wife said it's her favorite one so far! It's called the Cerdo Descardo and it's starts with a deep fried blue corn masa pizza dough topped with Birria marinated pork, cotija & other cheeses, salsa verde crema, pickled spicy radish, fresh diced onion & cilantro, with fresh lime wedges to squeeze all over it. It was like eating a big giant crispy street taco, with the flavors just popping from the first bite, and building on every bite after that. The pickled radish were particularly delicious, as was the crema! The pork was tender, juicy, and subtle in flavor, so as not to overwhelm, but to hold and compliment the punchy vegetable toppings. This was a great pizza, and it's available for the entire month of August! Drew makes the best dang specialty pies I've ever had, month after month, outdoing himself regularly. I'm psyched to be a member of the club in good standing! ❤️🍕❤️JAMIE AGER FOR CONGRESS: Heeeyyy! Someone from the local food industry is running for congress! I've known Jamie Ager from Hickory Nut Gap (due to our mutual interest in food!) for a bunch of years, and he's a real good guy, who's heart and mind are in the right place. He cares about WNC very much. He cares about people. He's a farmer, a business person, and someone who has multi-generational roots in these mountains.I support Jamie Ager for Congress, and I hope that you will learn more about him between now and the midterm elections!ASHEVILLE FOOD TOURS: This is what the Asheville Food Tours Experience is all about, Y'all! I had a really fun group the other day and we all had a blast visiting Table (pictured), Mountain Madre Asheville, Asheville Bee Charmer, Twisted Laurel Downtown Asheville, White Duck Taco Shop - Asheville, Wildwood Still and Sunshine Sammies! The next day I got a very nice text message from one of the managers at Twisted Laurel letting me know that my group came back with their kids! Yay! Food Tours are a win win win situation! I have fun, the guests frickin' love it, and our restaurant partners see the positive results of sharing a little bit of their menus and their stories with the tour guests, in the form of return business and great reviews! ❤️❤️❤️— end — Get full access to Stu Helm: Food Fan at stuhelmfoodfan.substack.com/subscribe

Lexington Ave in Downtown Asheville for dinner on Sunday, and wow. This place has been around for 20 years and we've always been fans, but we agree that the current menu might be their best iteration yet! They are crushing it!!! The kitchen sent out a few things for us to try, including a sample of their lamb and beef kefteh kabab which was super flavorful, juicy and delicious, some warm, sausage stuffed olives (not pictured) that we “oohed and ahhed” over, and the exciting and contrast-y beets & peaches with cheddar and mostarda (which is a slightly sweet slightly salty condiment made from fruit and mustard syrup). They also sent out samples of their excellent steak tartare, which came rolled up in beautiful edible leaves green and purple leaves of some kind, and is now my all-time favorite way to eat steak tartare! One of us ordered Chef Cate's signature dish: Lee's Green Rice, this time served with baby bok choy, and it remains one of the most deeply satisfying dishes we've ever had. The rice has a consistency similar to risotto, and a flavor that is just insanely delicious umami-ness and pure comfort in a bowl. The other two of us ordered the Right There Burger, and y'all, it was nuts. Soooo goood!!! Cooked rare, the way I ordered it, and covered in queso and heavily-caramelized onions, it came with pickles on the side, as well as some perfectly cooked fast-food style fries. I devoured it and have been craving it ever since. Chef Patrick seemed a little bummed out when I told him it was "like eating a stick of butter," until I assured him that was the highest compliment this guy gives out! 😂😂😂 For real though, our friend even made a point of telling the host that it was THE best burger she's ever eaten, and this particular friend is no novice when it comes to eating burgers! Thank you, Table, we love you and appreciate you so much! She got one carrot pancake, plus something that I can't remember the name of but was basically a latke with everything including lox on top. It was big! She loved it and brought half home for dinner, and later she told me it would be her new go-to at Sunny Point! I got my olllllld favorite, and one of my original "Stoobie Award" winning dishes from way back in the day: Shrimp 'n' Grits. Gah. Nobody does 'em like Sunny Point! They are rich, creamy, savory and flavorful, with the slightest smoke & tiniest heat from the chipotle sauce, plus loads of bacon and shrimps, and even some roasted tomatoes to keep it healthy! The coarse-ground grits are always perfect and this dish remains one of the best things to eat in all of WNC in my opinion. I crushed every speck and took my angle biscuit home for my wife who loves them, and therefore loves me for bringing her one. Thanks, Sunny Point Café for making about half my family super happy that day! ❤️DYING FOR IT: I went to Sweets and Seats Cafe with my family, where we all got something caffeinated to drink, and shared a very beautiful and insanely delicious Dubai chocolate extravaganza! And if you haven't been to Sweets and Seats yet, treat yourself sometime soon! And if you haven't jumped on the Dubai chocolate bandwagon yet, get on board! It comes in various forms but is always a combo of pistachio, filo, chocolate, and in this case, layers of delicious pistachio cream and chocolate wafers. To. Die. For. High recommends.KOLACHE B’GOSH! I was today years old when I learned what kolaches are, and then ate one, loved it and order three more to take home. Where have these doughy balls of awesome been my whole life???Well, now they're at BattleCat CoffeeBar on Haywood Rd in WAVL, and I'll be eating a lot of them! From the original post on Facebook: Amber Arthur (owner of Battlecat) - I’ve been working on these for the last six months! I’m honored to get your approval:) The sausage and gravy one is the best 🙂 I was there making them this morning, sad I missed you!Me: I was wondering if they were house made, or if there was some sort of Kollache maker in town that I didn't know about! Amber, the ham and cheese one was totally delicious, and I'm excited to try the jalapeño popper one, the sausage and gravy one, and the egg and cheese one that I bought to bring home! ❤️❤️❤️ [I did and they were awesome!]Amber: Please come earlier in the day! They’re hot and fresh from 7 am to 1:00 fresh, but then we just fill the case up for the rest of the day at 1. We’re selling like 100 a day, the neighborhood has spoken! Seriously, so glad you like them. I’ve been deep diving into kolache land since the second Corrine (Tiger Bay) said she was ready to retire 😔. I even took my staff out of state to try some killer ones. I’m trying to make them in a new style, a honor to the food I grew up on of course (I’ll always be Tex through and through,) but with a modern twist. Also, try a sweet one (the guava and lemons curd is currently my fav.) More flavors to come too! 🤤Me: We'll be back again and again for both sweet and savory style!BUTTERPUNK: Our friend Jason showed up with biscuits from ButterPunk while I was doing yard work, so I took a break to eat one. They were very buttery and crispy and tasty, and I pretty much needed a nap immediately afterwards! 😂😂😂ButterPunk is located at 372 Depot St., Asheville and is open Thursday-Monday: 8am-2pm, and closed on Tuesday & Wednesday.ASHEVILLE FOOD TOURS: This is what the Asheville Food Tours Experience is all about, Y'all! I had a really fun group the other day and we all had a blast visiting Table, Mountain Madre Asheville, Asheville Bee Charmer, Twisted Laurel Downtown Asheville, White Duck Taco Shop, Wildwood Still and Sunshine Sammies! The next day I got a very nice text message from one of the managers at Twisted Laurel letting me know that my group came back with their kids! Yay! Food Tours are a win win win situation! I went to the brand new Fitz & The Wolfe on the corner of Haywood and Battery Park Ave. in downtown Asheville and had an enormous, classic, messy, delicious double smash burger with all the works and I smashed every molecule. I don't think I need to describe a smashburger for you at this point in history, so I'll just say it was a good one, and I will definitely be eating more of them.I've lived in Asheville for nearly 20 years, and I've seen this space struggle to fill seats for most of that time, especially recently, but I think this new concept might be their most popular idea yet. It's a music venue, with indoor and outdoor seating, plus a "chillout" room in the basement for people who want to get away from the music for a moment and just talk. They have a very basic menu with burgers and hotdogs and such, and I heard that they were packed last weekend, so I hope they are again this weekend!EPIC VEGAN FOOD: I got an epic cinnamon roll and an excellent cappuccino at Summit Coffee Co. in The Grove Arcade from Backporch Baking, which means it’s vegan. This tiny cafe is one of my favorites! If there's room inside, they always have the AC set at the perfect temperature for the weather. If it's nice outside, they have a few seats under their awning and a few in the sun, and if all the seats are taken inside & out, I have the beautiful Arcade building and all of Battery Park to find a seat. The coffee at Summit is always just right and the people are really nice! 👍⚡️PROPER LUNCH: Paddy (pictured) and I had an excellent lunch at Asheville Proper (also located in the beautiful Grove Arcade building) the other day! I ordered the 'PROPER BURGER* which normally comes on a parker house bun but they were out of them so they subbed two sliders for one burger, and I didn't mind that a bit! It was cooked to order, house-ground beef, with lettuce, smoked cheddar, tomato jam. I asked them to hold the onions. I loved it!It had been a long time since I've had a burger or slider that wasn't smashed, so I really enjoyed my two medium rare sliders! Patty ordered a salad with grilled chicken, and he raved about it! We also shared their warm embered beet salad with strawberry yogurt and sunflower seeds, which we both really enjoyed. In the same way it was nice to not have a smash burger, it was also nice to not have goat cheese in the beet salad! Finally, the kitchen sent out some gnocchi, with nettle powder, hibiscus glaze, smoked ramps, strawberry chips, asparagus, and wisteria aioli, which was just as delicious as they sound. Five out of five stars for this lunch at Asheville Proper! Highly recommend!BRUNCH TIME! Paddy, Sarah and I went on a recent Asheville Food Tours brunch junket to one of our favorite restaurants in downtown, Chestnut, where I got biscuits and gravy with a once-over egg, Sarah got huevos tostadas with scrambled eggs (not pictured), and Paddy got the Southwest Cobb Salad with grilled chicken. We all enjoyed our food very much, as always, and for dessert we shared a delicious house made hand pie (also not pictured).Looking at the menu later, I decided that I need to go back for the peaches and burrata. Sounds great! Thanks, Chestnut!IF YOU’VE EVER seen my posts about Asheville Food Tours' lunch junkets, or pictures of something fun and exciting that I've eaten along my journeys, and thought to yourself, "I wanna do that! I frickin' love it, and I've been using it as a special treat to myself for the 20 years I've been living in Asheville. The cappuccino was also excellent, as well as having a very beautiful design in the foam. I'm not sure if it's abstract or if it's supposed to be something, but I'm gonna say it's a phoenix! Yeah, that it's! A foamy phoenix, rising from the ashes of drowsiness through the power of caffeine! COMIDA MOUNTAIN: Paddy, Sarah & I went on an Asheville Food Tours lunch junket to Mountain Madre Asheville recently and shared the chorizo-stuffed avocado as well as three creamy elote filled empanadas! Everything was exceedingly flavorful and very satisfying! The avocado was a beast, and if not for my own heroic efforts it would have been too much for the three of to crush, so keep in mind when ordering that it's huge, but almost impossible to stop eating! 😂 The empanadas were equally delicious and the conversation went something like this: "Mmm, these are good... yeah yeah these are real good... yeah, no, these are f*ckin' great."Hot, flakey and crispy on the outside, warm, creamy, and pure comfort on the inside. Highly recommended! We also got to briefly meet Chef Alejandra, a really nice person, who obviously knows how to make some very tasty stuff! I'm looking forward to our next visit!BETTER THAN EUROPE: My mom and sister were in Northern Europe for a couple of weeks, and although my mom enjoyed the food over there, she said it didn't compare to Asheville, and she couldn't wait to get back home and go to her favorite places, first and foremost: Modesto Asheville! We went for lunch and she got one her standards, the calamari fritti, which come with crispy kale and two kinds of sauce, one spicy one mildly sweet, and she loved it!She also order a big loaf of their tulipano bread with garlic Parmesan, and took most of that home for later. I got an enormous salad that included perfect grilled chicken, a lovely poached pear, greens and fresh sliced garden vegetables. It was excellent!!!Modesto is one of the best restaurants in WNC, Y'all, and the fact that they're open for lunch means that folks like my mom and I, who are more likely to go out for lunch than dinner, can get a very spcial fancy bite at a local farm to table restaurant 6 days a week! (Closed on Sundays) Super high recommends. ❤️❤️❤️GELATO: My mom and I both love Gelato, so we met up at Asheville Chocolate, where we each got a double scoop. She got mint stracciatella and coconut. I got cake batter and cookies & cream. I went back two days later and got a single scoop of peanut butter & jelly. Yum!So... it kinda seems like I'm eating my way through this gelato menu. We weren't surprised by how delicious, and homey-meets-elevated these dishes were, because we knew that Chef Shawn Cameron, formerly of The Corner Kitchen, one of the best brunch spots in America (they won an award!) and long-time Asheville favorite had been tapped to be Exec. Corner Kitchen is being rebuilt as we speak, so stay tuned for more on that, but in the meantime... let's talk about this foood!!! We started with some super-yummy Blueberry Ricotta Fritters w/ lemon cardamom curd. Warm, fluffy and soft inside, lightly crispy on the outside, and perfect with the lemon curd. This was a table favorite. Next we got what the chef called his signature dish, the Croque Madame Benedict aka griddled mini ham & cheese sandwiches on brioche with confit garlic dijonnaise, 2 poached eggs, Mornay sauce with chives & piment d' espelette (fancy Spanish pepper) and breakfast potatoes. This was superstar dish number one.It was everything I ever wanted, needed and dreamed about for brunch all on one plate. The flavors and textures were all spot-on and perfect in combination with each other. I can’t wait to go back and get this one! We also got an excellent breakfast sandwich on a croissant with egg, cheddar, bacon, tomato, arugula, and aioli. It was great, one of the best breakfast sandwiches I've ever had, and the kind of thing I could eat everyday. The 2nd superstar dish was the Strada Du Jur, which was made with local free range eggs, and the Chef's choice of fresh local & seasonal ingredients, as well as City Bakery bread, and it comes served with baby arugula salad, with strawberries, grape tomatoes & goat cheese, and lemon vinaigrette. It was hardy though kinda light, very deep in flavor, and very very satisfying in every way. This was Sarah's favorite! We also enjoyed some of thee creamiest cheese grits I've ever had! We asked, and Chef told us his secret, but I'm not sure that I'm allowed to share it with you! So you you'll have to go in and ask him yourself. All in all this was an awesome brunch tasting, and I highly recommend everything featured in this write up, especially the two superstar dishes! Check their hours online, and if you go, please tell them that Stu sent ya!TABLE: Y'awwwwlllllll... you know that when I add that many extra letters to the word "y'all," I've had an extra awesome experience somewhere, and that is absolutely the case with this meal that my wife and I had on the insanely cute little Ewok village porch at Table, located on N. Lexington Avenue in downtown Asheville. The food, the service, the atmosphere and the overall level of hospitality were all beyond excellent. The folks who work there are friendly, cheerful, knowledgeable, and very proud of what they're doing at this local favorite. They're also celebrating their 20 year anniversary with some festive polka dots on the sidewalks and windows as well as with a new and different menu. First: the prices and portions on most of the menu are smaller. That's perfect for people like me and Dawn, who want to try a lot of different flavors without overloading on content or calories. Of course, by the end of this meal, we were both full and satisfied, but we were not feeling uncomfortably heavy or gross. We started with a slightly larger than amuse bouche sized pair of Shrimp 'n' Ritz. You read that right. Straight-up Ritz crackers with some of theee most delicious and creamy oily savory melt-in-your-mouthy shrimp salad I've ever had on 'em. I'm still craving it three days latter. It was a super star dish, and not the only one. The kitchen treated us to some tuna crudo and a smashed cucumber salad that was sooo good, we crushed the whole thing and afterwords I said, "I think we each just ate a whole cucumber. And that's okay." It was the ever-so-mildest sour dill pickle flavored salad, with crunchy seeds and punchy herbs and spices sprinkled on top. The crudo was like eating magic. It was tender and velvety, smooth and tasty, with some fresh green coriander seeds that popped, both literally and flavor-wise, when we bit into them. We also ordered the Chicken Dumplings and the Lee's Rice & Greens. We've had the dumplings before and the fact that we ordered them again speaks for itself. They're basically little flavor bomb packets, swimming in a highly slurpable broth, that I did in fact slurp. FTW! One of my favorite people, Chef Catherine Smedley, who is a big part of the Table team, delivered the rice and greens in person because she wanted to tell us about her long, meticulous, trial and error journey to perfecting the dish. And it really WAS perfect. The rice had a consistency like a very light, creamy risotto, with an unbelievably comforting and homey flavor that was like caramelized chicken soup and aunty hugs. The greens were fresh, local, varied and interesting, and included one of my favorite seasonal greens, purslane. We oooed and ahhhed as we ate it, and complimented Chef Catherine up and down. Super high recommends for this, another super star dish! Our servers also consulted with Dawn about her beverages, and as always, they helped her make excellent choices. I had water, always an excellent choice! I truly cannot sing the praises of this meal loud enough. Every aspect was super enjoyable, and we can't wait to go back, and basically crush this whole menu. Restaurants like Table are the reason we fell in love with Asheville's food scene in the first place. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️BRUNCH 2: Coffee, zeppole, quiche and more coffee! I was invited back to Luminosa to highlight their brunch, which they already know I enjoy! This time I went "light" with the quiche and tiny salad. Before I even got in my "light" order, the kitchen had sent out some of their zeppole with house made strawberry rhubarb jam. Ermergerd... these things, especially when enjoyed warm, are some of the most fluffy and dreamy deep fried things I've ever had in my life. Do not skip the zeppole, either for a table share, or all for your ding-dang self! I ate one and saved one for dessert, because in the meantime my quiche had arrived. If I thought the zeppole were fluffy, this quiche had them beat. It was by far the tallest lightest fluffiest quiche I've ever eaten, but with all that egg and buttery crust, as well as a layer of crème fraiche, it was very filling, rich, decadent, and satisfying, as well as delicious of course. The tiny salad was as advertised, and I loved it. I just like the word "tiny," especially when it comes to food! I crushed both the salad & the quiche, leaving not one speck for Jenny Craig, and just as I was about to polish off the last zeppole, a giant, beautiful glass of super fantastic other worldly iced latte arrived, compliments of the rooftop bar/cafe! I can't quite recall what-all was in it, but it was sweet, creamy, very tasty and caffeinated AF!!! Woooooo! After all that food, combined with all that go-go juice, my body didn't know whether to take a long nap or run laps around the city! I smoked some weed instead of doing either of those things, and enjoyed the rest of a beautiful afternoon in downtown Asheville. I highly recommend doing something similar, starting with brunch at Luminosa! 🙂CHARACTER STUDY: We popped into a place with a very cool, bookstore / tavern / den kinda vibe on Haywood Road in West Asheville called Character Study to have a drink. Mine was NA. Both were great. We also had some salt and pepper pistachios, which I really liked a lot! I'm nuts about nuts. Love 'em! So I recommend this spot for a little chill out time, a drink, and a light snack!PNB: Dawn & I went back to Potential New Boyfriend on Haywood Rd. in West Asheville. I had only been once before, I loved it, and I knew Dawn would love it too, aaaand she did! We started with a low APV drink for Dawn and an espresso beverage for myself. Next, the owner, whose name is Disco, brought us each a small scoop of sorbet as a pallet cleanser. Then we ordered the quiche and some olives! We both really like quiche, and this quiche was great! Small enough to eat on one's own as a small plate, but big enough to share as a snack, and very savory with a lovely texture to the crust as well as the eggy part. The olives were great, if you like olives, which we both do (obvs), so we ate each & every one. I'm so glad that Dawn loved this place because I have been hoping that Potential New Boyfriend will become one of our regular spots and after this visit, I have a feeling it will be!ASHEVILLE FOOD TOURS: Please sign up for a food tour of downtown Asheville with me or Sarah, and experience Asheville the way we do, through the culinary world! It's an amazing space, with incredible decor, and it was flooded up to the ceiling, through to the second floor. I thought it might never come back, and I'm so glad I was wrong! The space is as beautiful as ever, and the charcuterie table they laid out for the re-opening party was epic. Biltmore Village ain't down for the count, Y'all! It's still here, and it's coming back to life! Go pay 'em visit at The Red Stag if you can. ❤️FORESTRY CAMP: I finally got over to Forestry Camp at Burial Beer Co. in Biltmore Village and wow! It's so nice, and mellow, and it was beautiful outdoors, so we sat on the great big porch, and had a wonderful time! I ordered the fish, Poboy, and it was fantastically delicious! I know I'm really late to the game when it comes to this venue, but better late than never! I highly recommend the venue, and this particular sandwich!EDIT: The Line Cook Perspective asked for more deets about this sandwich, so... The fish was a really nice, thick, perfectly tender, and mildly seasoned piece of red drum aka redfish. It was meaty enough to satisfy my carnivorous nature, but light enough that it didn't make me feel overly stuffed, even though I crushed the whole thing (Dawn took two bites). The dill pickles were large and in charge, fresh, crunchy, not overly vinegary, and seemed house-made to me, although I didn't see any claims to such on the menu. Then LTO, with the "O" coming in the form of very thinly sliced and sparcely dispersed red onion. The menu also just said "mayo," naming no specific brand, but the bread was an authentic Leidenheimer Roll. The side options were fries or mixed greens, I chose the latter, and also a side of ranch to put on... everything. 🙂BABY BULL: My mom and I went to Baby Bull a few weeks back because she had a hankering for a lobster roll. I ended up getting both a roll and a burger. Love me some surf n turf! The weather was lovely, the food was tasty, and the company was top notch!Warning: the little cup of green stuff has a lot of heat! I loved it, but my mom was unprepared and it lit her tongue up pretty good! I recommend taking a tiny taste first before you commit. 😂UNLEASH THE LITTLE BEAST: One day, I channeled my inner 12-year-old and got some chicken tenders from Buxton Chicken Palace in the S&W Market, and they were frickin' perfect!!!! YUM!!! Tender (duh), juicy, crispy, piping hot, and super delish, and there were a lot of them! I got some Alabama sauce to dip 'em in, and I was in little-kid heaven. Then I went back a one week later and got even more chicken tenders from Buxton Chicken Palace. They were equally awesome, and I dumped them out of the container so y’all could see just how many you get.Truth: Once I unleash my inner child, he only wants more and more and more chicken tenders. I’ve had to physically restrain him ever since I ate these, but the urge is strong, and I have a feeling that I’ll give in to him again soon. He wants them with salted caramel ice cream. Little brat.SPOTLIGHT LUMINOSA: Back in April, I took a couple of locals on a private food tour of downtown, and y'all, sometimes a dish hits the table, and everyone, including people at other tables, is like, "Oh wow!" This was one of those times. We were up on the rooftop cafe/bar of The Flatiron Hotel, on Battery Park Ave in downtown Asheville and the Luminosa kitchen sent up their “Forager Pie,” topped with ramps, knotweed, miners' lettuce, mustard flowers, and ricotta. Everybody's jaw dropped, including mine. And as long as my mouth was already open, I slid a slice right in! It was fricking delicious!!!The fresh toppings were bright, the base had depth and comfort cooked in, and the dough was chewy and crunchy, with an umami to it that none of us could put our finger on, but everyone agreed added to the sheer impressiveness of this stellar pie. Chef Graham House and his crew are combining Italian and Appalachian ingredients and techniques, which might sound weird, but this Forager Pie kind of explains it all. The views up on the rooftop of the Flat Iron are amazing , service is always top notch, and the bar put out some drinks for my patrons that they enjoyed very much! Not long after that, I went back to Luminosa for brunch on patio with two friends from out of town, and I got the focaccia ‘n’ gravy, which is their take on biscuits ‘n’ gravy, with house made focaccia and house made hot Italian sausage gravy, and a couple of over easy eggs. It was super delicious, the service was beyond excellent, and it was a real pleasure to sit outside in downtown Asheville with my friends on a truly beautiful Sunday afternoon. Check their hours online, but be sure to get to the Flatiron for food on the 1st floor and the 9th. I recommend all of it very highly!ASHEVILLE FOOD TOURS: Please sign up tot take a fun and filling food tour of downtown Asheville with me, or my compatriot, Sarah! We all love tacos from TacoBilly, and we all have our favorites from their menu! I went recently and got the Santi and the Grandberry. My friend Jennie aka The Boss at KickbackAVL got a Mamas Favorite and a Migas.Which Taco Billy tacos are your favorites?WALKIN’ FOOD: Jambon buerre on the hoof from Mother. Nom nom.SNEAKING A GELATO: Sometimes... when my Asheville Food Tours patrons are eating their delicious plates of food at Strada Italiano, I sneak next door to Asheville Chocolate and get myself a gelato. This time it was cake batter flavored, with rainbow sprinkles, and it was frickin’ awesome. I highly recommend sneaking away from whatever it is that you're doing right now and getting yourself some!CUTE SEATING & BEVERAGES: I love to stop in to Farewell cafe on the South Slope on my walk home from work, to sit outside and sip a perfect cute little ol’ cortado in the glorious weather. It's my happy place.Plus, they recently installed several really cute new tables on the patio and I like them very muchGOLF LUNCH: My mom and I did one of our favorite things recently: Grabbed lunch and played mini golf! She had a hankering for Favilla's New York Pizza and I hadn't been there in forever, so I was totally up for it, and conveniently, it's pretty much right near Tropical Gardens Mini Golf on Patton Ave. I got a delicious "grandma style" slice and my mom got some spinach and feta rolls, one for lunch and two for dinner later at home. I also couldn’t resist trying their new chicken tender slider, which was great! The Grandma Pizza was crunchy and doughy and delicious, the toppings were fresh and tasty, and the little chicken sandwich was really fun and yummy! If I could walk to Favilla from my house, I'd probably be eating these little chicken sandwiches all the time! After lunch, we played mini golf, and my mom beat me by one point. As she always says, she loves "a sport that an old woman can play and win." 😂 I highly recommend a wee little day trip to get pizza and play a few rounds of mini golf if you have time. 🍕⛳️JUANCHOS FONDA: Paddy and I went on a recent Asheville Food Tours lunch junket out Sweeten Creek Road to visit our old friend Jeison at his new Columbian Fusion restaurant called Juanchos Fonda! You can see from the pictures that the portions are very generous! When the food showed up, our eyes popped right out of our heads, and just stared at each other across the table. Paddy got the Bandejs Paisa with pork belly, steak, chorizo, egg, rice, beans, plantains & avocado. I got the Lomo Salted which is steak tender loin, marinated in soy sauce, & beer with fries, rice, julianas, avocado & red pepper. It was an enormous amount of food, packed with flavor and freshness, served in a charming, homey atmosphere, by very nice people who really care about their menu!If you like Colombian food, or want to try it for the first time, I highly recommend a trip to Juanchos Fonda to say hey to Jeison & crew! BONUS: Parking is not an issue.ASHEVILLE FOOD TOURS: Here’s the boss at Asheville Food Tours, Paddy 2 Skewers at the rooftop re-opening party for Wildwood Still on the 7th floor of the Moxy Asheville hotel. The space is elegant, the views are amazing, the food is top notch, and we had a blast hanging out with so many friends and associates at the party! 🎉 High recommends for this restaurant! Please sign up for a food tour with me, or Sarah, or on rare occasions, Paddy himself!— end — Get full access to Stu Helm: Food Fan at stuhelmfoodfan.substack.com/subscribe

You might have heard, Baba Nahm’s new location on Biltmore Ave is open! I popped in for lunch, and got myself the lamb and beef pita burger, with grilled vegetables on the side, and they brought out an appetizer of grilled halloumi cheese for me to try!Everything was delicious, and the portions were generous, I enjoyed it all very much! I can't wait to go back and try their breakfast menu, as well as the rest of their lunch menu. Also, they told me that they will soon expand into dinner hours!Baba Nahm is a local favorite, with a loyal following, who really represent what we love to eat up here in these mountains! Fresh, interesting food, prepared by people we know and love! Thank you, Chef Brian and Laura for always bringing great food to the people in Asheville and Western North Carolina! ❤️❤️❤️FRANNY’S FARMACY & POTENTIAL NEW BOYFRIEND: Y'all, Paddy & I took a short drive over to West Asheville, to visit our good friend Franny at Franny’s Farmacy located at 645 Haywood Rd., right next to the very exciting and popular new dessert/cocktail lounge called Potential New Boyfriend. So, first we looked around the store and I made a purchase of four cute little prerolls called Goat Tokers. (ahem.. say what now?) We each lit one up, and smoked-up on Franny's beautiful outdoor back patio space, and then we all went next-door for a dessert extravaganza! Franny's newest location has a lot of charm, it's very cozy and comfortable, the staff is great, and the product is excellent! I recommend it very highly for people who like to smoke and relax and be around like-minded friends. So, after we got all blazed up at Franny's Farmacy, we went right next-door to Potential New Boyfriend, where the owner, whose name is Disco, treated us to some samples of his frozen creations, like a cucumber mint sorbet, Vietnamese, iced coffee ice cream, a tiny version if his epic strawberry shortcake sundae, a vanilla affogato, and an ice cream crème brûlée.I am a huge ice cream fan, and I was in heaven! I can't wait to go back and have every ding dang thing on their dessert menu, as well as trying their savory menu! The espresso that came with the affogato was perfect, not bitter, not sour, but just right, and it came in some of the cutest little cups I've seen in a while, that were shaped just like a stove-top espresso machine. Franny's friend, Dr. Steph got an aromatic wine which she enjoyed very much!I am very excited to go back to this fun, cute and delicious little spot again and again! Plus a meatball. Andrea built her own pie, with green peppers and crumbled house made Italian sausage. I ordered one from the menu called the Hawaiian Hottie. It was great! And yes, it did have pineapple on it. I don't have a lot of rules around pizza, and I am definitely down for Hawaiian style. (I am part Canadian after all! 😂) It also had ham, bacon, and jalapeños on it. It was hot and spicy and sweet and savory and hit all the nails on the head. They are proud of their meatballs, so they brought me one to try, and it was great! Nice texture, classic flavor, thumbs up! Service was very friendly, and we also met one of the owners, who was super nice and very enthused about their business! So, I totally recommend Franklin Pizza Tavern! I remarked to Andrea on the way home that we are all so lucky in WNC to have really good pizza tucked away here and there all over these mountains! 🙏 🍕‼️ASHEVILLE ON $68.50 A DAYY'all, 21 years ago Chef Rachael Ray helped put Asheville’s burgeoning culinary scene on the map when she featured our city on an episode of her “$40 Per Day,” television series. I rewatched the episode on YouTube recently, and decided to take on the challenge, in honor of Chef Ray’s historic visit! Adjusting for Inflation, $40.00 from 2004 would be equal to $68.50 today, in 2025, and feeding myself a reasonable and realistic amount of delicious and iconic food in Asheville for $68.50 per day sounded pretty easy to me! Below is a synopsis. You can read the whole piece by clicking HERE. It was really fun to do, so maybe I'll do it again!8:30AM: BREAKFAST AT THE MED: The first person-on-the-street that Chef Ray asked where to eat in Asheville gave her the best advice ever, which she ignored! LOL She did just fine, but Dude was absolutely correct, and it was already on my list so, I started my journey by going to The Med for breakfast, where I got their classic biscuits ‘n’ gravy, with a cup of coffee, and it was frickin’ delicious! It filled me up, hit the spot, tasted great, and was all scratch made, in house. I love The Med! I could have added an egg for another $2.00, but the dish didn’t need it in my opinion, and was just right the way it was: Straight-up, and the perfect something Southern to start my day, at downtown Asheville’s oldest restaurant!COST: Biscuits & Gravy + Coffee + Tax + Tip = $14.7712:30PM: LUNCH AT BURGERWORX: I wasn’t hungry again for a long time but when I finally was, I was REALLY hungry. 21 years ago, Chef Rachael Ray had an elk burger and an enormous pile of quinoa for lunch from a Native American restaurant called Spirits on the River, which closed about 5 years after her visit. I never had a chance to visit it myself, regrettably, and these days an elk burger in this town is probably gonna run about $22.00+, so with my budget in mind, I opted to hit up one of my favorite spots and just jam a giant, fully loaded smash burger into my maw.I’ve been going to Burgerworx in the Grove Arcade Building Downtown since they first opened. They are an independently owned little “fast food” smash burger joint, and I love them with all of my heart… attack… medicine… inside of me… because gah. So decadent but so delicious. I have a mathematical approach to the number of patties I add to a smash burger: 1 patty for a snack, 2 patties for a meal, 3 patties for my last meal. Since this was lunch, I went with 2 patties, added American cheese for a dollar, plus all the freebies: Lettuce, tomatoes, DJ’s Pickles, and jalapeño wheels. No onions. I could have purchased a side of fries for $4.00, but I knew that for me, it would have been overkill, so I went sans fries, and as expected, I was stuffed.COST: Classic Smash Burger + Add A Patty + Cheese + Tax + Tip = $15.413:30PM: SNACK AT BOTIWALLA: Back in 2004, when Chef Rachael Ray came to Asheville, she had an afternoon snack at a place called Picnics that is no longer around. She had an enormous piece of pie with whipped cream and fruit, and to be honest, if I ate that much pie in the middle of the day, I’d be DONE. Couch-bound. I usually have a cup of coffee in the afternoon, so I decided to combine my caffeine intake with a moderate snack, and I know of a little trick to get that done on the cheap in Downtown Asheville!Did you know that every cup of chai that you order from Botiwalla by Chai Pani on Battery Park Ave in Downtown Asheville comes with a free package of 10 Parle-G “original gluco cookies?” It’s true! And yeah, no, I have no idea what “gluco cookie” means, but I like ’em! They are small, crunchy, sweet but not cloying, and have a unique little somewhat vanilla-y flavor to them. They obviously go great with chai, and the chai at Botiwalla is by far the best I’ve ever had. It’s packed with rich, deep, Spicewalla flavors, and is creamy, sweet, filling and served hot or cold. I got mine hot on a damp rainy day and it was the perfect thing to take the chill off.COST: Chai + Tax = .27¢ + Tip = $4.877:00 PM: DINNER AT TWISTED LAUREL DOWNTOWN ASHEVILLE: Yeah, yeah, I know: No big surprise that I’m adding these guys to my list. I eat at Twisted a lot and I’m good friends with the chef, and the managers, and pretty much the whole crew at Twisted Laurel Downtown Asheville, which is indicative of how much I love the food and the folks who work there. I wasn’t always friends with them! Seems weird now, but there was a time when we didn’t even know each other. Then I started going in… again and again… on my own, with food tours, with friends and family, and it just became my number one jam. I eat there more often than anywhere else, and I always recommend it to locals and visitors alike, and in particular I point out their trout to everyone I can, so that’s what I had for dinner: TROUT!Trout is our only local fish up in these mountains, and you can find it on just about every menu in WNC in one form or another, and while lots of people do great things with it, for my money, no one does it as consistently well as my friend Chef Tom LaFauci. He doesn’t mess around. He does it old school, but with his own touch: Pecan crusted, topped with whiskey braised peaches, served on mashed potatoes, with green beans, and topped with a beautiful beurre blanc sauce. It was perfect, and I told my friend Sarah that it’s the kind of dish I could eat almost every day, and it was the best way I could think of to end my Rachael Ray-esque journey through Asheville, with a very local bite from a local chef that I personally know and love. Thanks, Tom!COST: Trout Entree + Tax + Tip = $28.25GRAND TOTAL FOR THE DAY: $63.30PEANUT BUTTER TRIPLE DOWN: I smoked an "Icy Cone" from Mellow Fellow on my walk downtown, and then my friend Jarod at the bank gave me a homemade peanut butter chocolate egg that was super delish, then my friend Andrea at the The Cottage Collections gave me a mini peanut butter cup, and then I got a Peanut Butter & Jelly Latte at Izzy's Coffee Den on N. Lexington Ave in downtown Asheville and now I feel awesome. We’ve been through some tough times here in WNC lately. I recommend some me-time and self care in the form of peanut buttery things. 🙂ASHEVILLE FOOD TOURS: We've been bringing our Asheville Food Tours into Wildwood Still on the 7th floor of the Moxy Asheville hotel lately, and I've come to believe that it's the most exciting new restaurant to (re)open so far in 2025. Chef Austin Tisdale has been serving us something different every time we go in, from braised short ribs to confit duck bao buns, and sometimes with a little extra taste of wonderfulness on a spoon, so I've tried a lot if the menu in sample form, and it's top notch stuff. High end, attractive food that's tasty AF. My tour patrons tell me that the cocktail samples are also on point, and I can tell you from experience that the mocktails are too.Chef is a super nice person, so hopefully you'll get to meet him if you go. Everything he's served us has been a highlight of every tour we've brought up there. So I highly recommend a visit, either on your own or with me and a food tour, to the Wildwood Still, where the views are excellent and so is the food!— end — Get full access to Stu Helm: Food Fan at stuhelmfoodfan.substack.com/subscribe

There were tons of people there, most of them friends and associates, and the food was amazing! We grazed and talked and grazed and networked and grazed and laughed and hugged and even cried a tear or two, as this was the very first Taste of Asheville since the hurricane hit and emotions we flowing freely. Year after year, The Taste of Asheville is the BEST food event of the year, and has been my favorite food event since I attended my first one about a decade ago.Thank you, Asheville Independent Restaurant Association for putting on this great annual party/reunion for the eaters & makers! Thank you, Asheville-Buncombe Technical Community College, A-B Tech staff and students for hosting and working this important gathering of like minded people. And of course, thank you a million times over to alllll of the fabulous people who make up our amazing community of Food, Beverage & Hospitality in our wonderful city! ❤️❤️❤️MOW ABC: Y’all, I want to talk to you about Meals on Wheels of Asheville & Buncombe Co., who are currently serving over 600 seniors every weekday of every week of every year. The need for the services that Meals on Wheels Asheville Buncombe provides has grown exponentially since the pandemic, followed by inflation, and now hurricane recovery. Three new delivery routes have been added to our area just since the hurricane to bring more seniors a healthy meal, some human kindness, and a little friendly interaction every day.Food insecurity continues to grow, and any federal cuts will only make this situation worse for our seniors. The federal government currently provides Meals On Wheel Asheville Buncombe with around $200,000 annually, which is about 20% of their overall budget. Meals on Wheels ABC will be affected by federal cuts, and they don’t know what the future holds.Every golf junket that President Trump takes literally costs the tax-payers over 1,000 times more than our federal government provides to Meals on Wheels of Asheville & Buncombe for their entire fiscal year. Yet, the richest people in America would deny us funding to feed and bring comfort to our senior population. Trump is a cruel and heartless person, and we live in a very sick society. This is the richest country in the world, yet we struggle to meet the basic daily needs of our all of our citizens. It doesn't have to be this way. We need to elect compassionate representatives, who care about the people who have the fewest resources, not just those who literally have the most. I'm thankful that here in WNC we have an active & empathetic community who will do our very best to fill in the gaps, but it won't be easy. As the T-shirts say, "We tired." But LFG.Meals On Wheels ABC needs volunteers to deliver meals, as well as donors, of money and goods. If you have time, money or other resources, please go HERE.There’s an event coming up on National World Hunger Day, which is Wednesday, May 28. And it will be at The Hi Wire Event Center, which is located at 2B Huntsman Place in Biltmore Village. The event is to celebrate the spirit of giving and community, share updates, and to recognize the incredible contributions of the people who support Meals On Wheels Asheville Buncombe. There will be light refreshments and libations served. To find out more you can contact Nikki Harris emailing nikki.harris@mowabc.orgThe event is free to attend, and people will have the opportunity to donate if they would like. Also, our good friends at Botiwalla Downtown are hosting a “give-back” night for Meals On Wheels on June 17th, when all orders, whether dine in, takeout, or delivery, will result in a donation back to Meals On Wheels, and Nikki Harris herself will be on site to answer questions and engage with customers. As mentioned, Meals On Wheel Asheville Buncombe County needs volunteers to deliver meals, and there are two categories of volunteer drivers: Drivers who can commit to driving the same route one weekday per week, and substitute drivers who are "on call" in case a regular driver is unable to volunteer. Anyone who is interested in driving for Meals on Wheels can fill out an application HERE.Folks, the people I talk to who work for organizations that are fighting hunger every day tell me it's a battle that can be won. Hunger is not inevitable. There is more than enough food in this world to feed everyone, but hunger isn’t about food. It’s about money. And access. And right now, some of the richest people in America are threatening to cut off the relatively tiny amount of federal funding that our area receives to help feed our seniors. Please step up, volunteer and donate, but also speak up, and let our elected officials know that Western North Carolina cares about our senior population, and it’s the least we can do as a society to provide them with Meals on Wheels.ASHEVILLE FOOD TOURS: Y'all, if you're looking for something super fun to do with friends and family, whether you live in Asheville and WNC, or you're visiting from elsewhere, please consider taking a food tour with me! I do private tours for two to four people on Mondays and Thursdays, and I lead tours of up to 14 people for Asheville Food Tours on Sundays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays! I went to Miyako House for lunch a while back, where I'm trying to eat something different from their massive sushi, sashimi, Thai and Chinese food menu every time I go in to dine. On this visit, I got a very nice Surf & Turf Roll that came with a bowl of miso soup. I know miso soup is just kind of whatever to some people, but I honestly think Miyako House has the best! It's one thing that I've had multiple times there, and it's just tastier and somehow a little creamier than other miso soups I've had.The roll was fun, and had delicious spicy tuna, very tender seared rare steak, jalapeño wheels, and a mild wasabi sauce that was more about flavor than heat. I love wasabi, so I added more. The presentation was beautiful, and the roll was very yummy, and I ate it all!I'm excited for my next visit to dine at Miyako House, to try something new, maybe I'll dive into the Chinese section. Thank you, Jessica and Chef Raymond for always being gracious hosts and for constantly cranking out excellent food for Asheville!THE WAY OF THE ANDALE: So, I recently walked to Mother for a late lunch, and... note to self... they close their kitchen between lunch and dinner, so I doubled back and went to an ol' neighborhood favorite, Andale Way Mexican Grill! There I ran into a couple of my friends, Chefs Catherine and Griffin Riffe from Infuso, who told me that they go there weekly, which is also the case with a lot of other folks I know. I chose to sit outside, and I ordered the Spicy Enchiladas with ground beef, which come topped with shredded cheese and borracha salsa, with shredded lettuce, tomatoes, sour cream, rice & beans on the side.It was well past 3:00pm, this was my first solid food of the day, I was really hungry, and I hoovered the entire plate like tomorrow may never come, and I truly loved every bite! Was it spicy? Yeah, it had a nice little kick to it! It's not gonna light your face on fire, but I was feeling some heat! This food was just what I needed, the patio was pleasant AF, my server was great, and my friends who work there are always kind, warm, and friendly, not just to me, but to all their loyal customers and anyone else who walks through the door. On a more recent visit, my wife got a super fancy and (according to her) very delicious margarita that she enjoyed very much and I got a delicious taco but forgot to take a dang picture! Located at the bottom of the South Slope, Andale Way has ample parking, a large menu, a full bar, and as I mentioned, great food! It's in our neighborhood, and my whole family loves it! Thank you, Chef Salvador and crew for always being consistent and excellent! I appreciate you.HIGH EDIBILITY: I often pop into Bee Thai Kitchen on my walk home from work, and I'm often verrry hungry when I do. The food there has what I call a very high "edibility factor," which just means that I love to shovel it into my maw like hay into a baler until my very hungry feelings turn into very full feelings. I almost always go for the crab fried rice, which I find to be a lightly flavored dish made with crab, carrot, scallions and fluffy scrambled up eggs. It's just sooo easy to eat! Nom nom nom! This time I also got some pad Thai, a familiar dish that brings comfort and excitement to my soul whenever I eat it. Their version is not too sweet, not too spicy, not too sticky, and again, it just makes for some very good easy eatin'! Finally I ordered their steamed pork dumplings, which I find unique to Bee Thai Kitchen in that they are solid and dense, almost like a wee little bit of sausage wrapped in dough. The first time I had them, I wasn't into it, and then I accidentally ordered them again, and I'm glad I did, because now I'm into it! 🙂 So, I recommend this restaurant and these dishes, especially if you're down to shovel tons of it into yourself.BEAR’S IS BACK: My sister, my nephew and I went to Bear's Smokehouse BBQ on the South Slope, who are back in business after nearly 6 months of working with World Central Kitchen to help feed people in post-Helene WNC.My sister got burnt ends, mac 'n' cheese, and salad, my nephew got a pulled chicken sandwich.and I got one of my all-time favorites, the impossible meatloaf sandwich with slaw and cheese sauce. The impossible meatloaf is meatless, so it's as healthy as my sister's salad... pretty much... and it's spicy, flavorful, and texturally pleasing. The cheese sauce is crucial to my enjoyment, but if you leave it off, this beast is suddenly vegan! Wha??? Gettin' healthier by the minute. Anyhoo, we all loved our food and my whole family have been fans of Bear's for a long time, and we will ALWAYS remember what they did, and continue to do for the people of Western North Carolina.PRIVATE FOOD TOURS: Come on a private walking tour of downtown Asheville with me! I'm available for private food tours, as well as tours of any kind, combined with food! For example I can take you to nothing but restaurants, or I can take you to restaurants and art galleries, or restaurants and dispensaries, or restaurants and retail shops! I've done all of those types of tours, and I still offer all those types of tours!Plus, on every tour we visit, look at, and talk about historical buildings, discuss Asheville's past, present & future, tell jokes and stories, and pretty much talk about whatever you wanna talk about! If you're interested in booking a private walking tour of downtown Asheville with me, the first thing you need to do is send an email to StuHelmAVL@gmail.com and introduce yourself! I hope to hear from you soon! ❤️ Photo taken at Huli Sue's BBQ and Grill— end — Get full access to Stu Helm: Food Fan at stuhelmfoodfan.substack.com/subscribe

Before they won their James Beard Foundation award, you needed rezos a couple weeks in advance. After they got their JBF award, the wait time became a couple of months! Now days, though, in this (hopefully brief) post-hurricane period, you can get reservations for Cùrate the week of, even the day of, and chances are that at certain times of day, you can walk-in with no reservations and get a table or a seat at the bar, which is exactly what my wife and I did a couple weeks ago.We shared two of our all-time Asheville favorites, that we've been eating at Cùrate since they first opened in 2011: The pan con tomate with Manchego cheese, and the pincho maruno aka lamb skewers. The bread with tomato and cheese and light, refreshing, and slightly punchy with the tang of the Manchego. The skewers are simply devine. They are tender, savory, and packed with the flavor of Spicewalla's special Moorish blend. The pickles add the perfect bright balance to the deeper flavors of the meat and spices. Anyhoo, Cùrate. Always great. Still great. And more accessible than ever. Again, Locals, now is the time to come downtown and enjoy this and all that our amazing little city has to offer! I hope to see you there!BEST IN TOWN? OK, please don't hate me, but I can't remember the names or ingredients of most of these things, and I forgot to take a picture of the menu, and the menu at Mother bakery tends to change in little ways and big ways, so I'm not even sure if these things are on the menu still! The big takeaway from this meal was that about 2/3 of the way through, my wife said to me, "this might be the best restaurant in Asheville right now." She is much more discerning about food than I am, so for her to say that is a pretty big deal! And what I mean by that is, I'm all good throwing smash burgers and fried chicken and biscuits and gravy into myself all day and being happy as a baby and its mother's arms, but my wife takes care of her body, and puts nothing but high-quality foods into herself, mostly in the form of healthy salads that she prepares at home. When we do go out to eat together, we usually go someplace that's on the higher end of the spectrum, both in terms of the price, and the menu itself. Mother is also in our neighborhood, so it's relatively easy for us to get there.Anyhooooo... we got the bread service, which consisted of an insanely cute and delicious little loaf of brioche with cheese in it, and a perfectly formed quenelle (I know a word!) of herbed butter. Next, we got prawn in an otherworldly sauce that was garlicky and savory and deep and just one of the most delicious things ever! We also got a salad to share, and that was great!I've been on a salad kick myself lately, and enjoyed this one very much. Finally, as we were about to die… I mean, leave, the kitchen sent out a bowl of their house made pasta. OMG.I love their pasta, and have eaten several forms and versions of it, and it's truly splendid. Tender, but toothy, and whether it's covered in a red sauce, or served as a carbonara, it's always the kind of dish that makes my eyes roll into the back of my head, and then I just stare at the person that I'm with and say nothing. And if I'm dining alone, I just stare into space. So, of course, I recommend Mother highly, and when you go in, tell them, I said, "howdy," and save me a seat! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️LI’L LOBSTER TAIL: I got this very interesting little grilled lobster tail at Shanghai Dumpling House not long ago. It was served hot, had a nice texture, an excellent flavor, and a really tasty sauce. I loved it. Lobster is, like, my favorite thing on Earth, and here in these mountains, I'm prepared to pay beaucoup dollars for it, and I did. 😂 🦞 💰I treated the broccoli like a garnish. 😂HEAVEN HILL: Y'all, I took a wee little road trip to one of my favorite places that I don't get to nearly often enough, Sand Hill Kitchen way out there on Sardis Road. Existing like a magical manatee in the culturally brackish waters along the border of West Asheville and Candler, the excellent and accessible menu attracts folks from both areas, as well savvy tourists, and short-distance local travelers like myself. Lucky for me, my good friend David Brown from Doc Brown's BBQ had a hankering to go see our mutual friend, Chef Jamie Wade at Sand Hill and grab some grub, and wooof... did we ever. I got the enormous "Winner Burger" which has herbed Duke's Mayonnaise, pickled jalapeños, tomato, house made pepper jack pimento cheese, and as you can clearly see in the pictures, not just bacon, but BACON! It reached out and grabbed me! The burger was excellent, there's a reason that it won an award! It did have a little bit of a kick to it, and it was about a 3-napkin burger, so be prepared for both of those things. On a five star scale, I give it five stars! If I could walk to Sand Hill Kitchen, I'd be there twice a week.David got what he always gets, the beet sandwich. This thing is legendary, and everybody is always telling me that I have to try it, but when I get to Sand Hill, and there's two kinds of burgers, a fried chicken sandwich, and a Reuben standing between me and the one made out of beets... yeah. David enjoyed his beet sandwich very much. Then he casually mentioned Jaime's grit cakes, so she quickly made a couple, and they were awesome! Very creamy and comforting on the inside, and very crispy and crunchy on the outside. I didn't grow up eating grit cakes, but I wish I had! When they're done right, they're some of the best stuff ever. And Chef Jamie Wade at Sand Hill Kitchen always does everything exactly right! Thanks, Chef, and all the awesome staff at Sand Hill! And thanks, David, for inviting me to lunch at one of the best places in WNC. 🙂 PS - Jaime put a little cup full of teeny tiny M&Ms in front of us while we were waiting for our food, and said, "An amuse-bouche." I ate a lot of them.TASTE TIX: Less than a week until Taste of Asheville, get your tickets before they sell out!— END — Get full access to Stu Helm: Food Fan at stuhelmfoodfan.substack.com/subscribe

Perfect. ❤️Then, because that pound cake situation worked out so well, I stopped into All Day Darling again a few days later on my way to my mom's house, and absolutely destroyed this delicious plate of food! I didn't realize how hungry I was until I was already on my walk, and fortunately, ADD is about 1/2 way in between my mom's house and my house. By the time I got my food and started to eat I was famished! When ordering, I had kept it pretty basic, with a couple of over-medium eggs, some toast, some ham, and a nice bright salad. It was just what my body was crying out for! Grains, greens, and proteins. The addition of a small salad to any breakfast is always a good thing in my book. Thanks All Day Darling! You provided me with exactly what I needed, exactly when I needed it!NOT SAD ABOUT LUNCH: On another day, my mom and I took a small road trip to Abeja's House Cafe, which is one of her favorites! She introduced me to it a few years ago, and it has become one of my favorites as well. I gave them one of my Food Fan awards for their amazing NOLA Chicken and Shrimp, and it's hard for me not to order that dish every time we go, but that day they had one of my all-time favorite dishes on their list of specials: Steak and Eggs! (I like foods with an "and" in the middle) So I ordered it up and believe me I was not the least bit sad that I did not have my usual chicken and shrimps! The steak was tender and delicious, the eggs were cooked exactly to my specifications, the toast was toasty, and the grits were cheesy, creamy, and done just right. I was very happy with my decisions that day. My mom got the breakfast quesadilla. She ate half and loved it, then took the rest home for dinner that night. Thank you, Abeja's! Also, a shout out to our server, who did a great job, and had a good sense of humor! 🙂I CHOOSE BLUE: I got a beautiful and delicious peanut butter chocolate truffle at French Broad Chocolates recently, just to give me a little sugar bump before one of my Asheville Food Tours.I was attracted by the color, then I was a little "meh" on the description, but the person working behind the counter assured me that it is delicious, and they were not wrong. Sometimes it's wise to just put your faith in the experts! 🙂THIS JUST IN: From the Chefs Griffin & Catherine Riffe from Infuso, who are really onto something unique and special with their infused foods, which they’ve combined with their love of JRR Tolkien (something else we have in common!) to The Second Breakfast Club! Their first one is happening on April 20 (4/20), which also happens to be Easter Sunday! Here’s a recent Facebook post…###Coming up on 4/20/2025In collaboration with our good friends at Hygge Markets , join us for SECOND BREAKFAST CLUB!An immersive, gently infused brunch buffet experience featuring recipes inspired by the world of Tolkien’s Middle-Earth. Tickets: theticketing.co/e/secondbreakfastclub###FANCY LUNCH: So... we've had a little extra time on our hands due to the slowdown in tourism, so Paddy, Sarah and I have been doing a few more Asheville Food Tours lunch junkets than usual lately, partly to stay in touch with our restaurant partners, partly because we enjoy each others company, and partly because we just love walking around downtown and visiting all our fave places. We basically can't stop ourselves. Anyhoo, we recently went to Modesto Asheville for some of the fanciest and most delicious food available at lunchtime in downtown. I was still kinda full from the day before, so I thought I'd go with something light and just order a salad with shrimps on it... yeah... no... it was frickin' huge. When looking at the picture above, keep in mind that the plate itself was probably at least 12 or 13 inches in diameter, and had ten big shrimps, and a heaping pile of greens and such. It was epic and awesome. The salad dressings (plural) were light and tangy but not too tangy with just a touch of sweetness. They went great with each other, and with the salad, as well as with the shrimps, which were grilled nicely and had a pleasant SC flavor & texture, that I find to be a little sweeter and more fibrous than shrimp from other regions. Almost like a tiny lobster. 🦞 It was a lot more food than I had anticipated, but I put on my seatbelt and stepped on the gas. When the dust settled, I had eaten all the shrimp and most of the greens, and was stuffed to the max. I don't know what's happening to me... but lately I've been really enjoying... salads. 😜TAKE A TOUR WITH US: Locals, now is the time to act like a tourist on our own town with Asheville Food Tours! Tourism is light, parking isn’t a nightmare, the views are amazing, and the restaurants would love to see you! Since Helene, businesses have been struggling, including our little ol’ food tour company, and all of our amazing restaurant partners, but things are looking up! When I do have tours, something that has been really awesome, is that I’ve been getting a lot of locals, as well visitors, and many repeat customers, who all love Asheville are here to support our city! I’d love to see you on a tour, and so would our other tour guide, Sarah and the boss, Paddy!— end — Get full access to Stu Helm: Food Fan at stuhelmfoodfan.substack.com/subscribe

Thanks To Deb & All The Listeners and WPVM 103.7fm!THE NEWSLETTERWNC PIZZA WEEK 2025 IS OVER! Thanks to all the pizza makers and pizza eaters who helped to make the inaugural WNC Pizza Week a big success! I'm hearing from the pizza makers that they had fun, that it was easy to participate, they saw a bump to their bottom line as a result, and they would absolutely do it again! I also heard from the eaters that they tried some excellent specialty pies that were made just for pizza week, and ate pizza multiple times at multiple venues throughout the week! YAY!!!My own family indulged in pizza more than once, including a fun game night pizza party where we ordered the Pizza Week specials from Manicomio Pizza on Biltmore Ave Downtown, and Mission Pizza Romana located at the top of the South Slope. Everyone (8 people) loved all four pies, but we all had our individual favorites too. We ate until we were stuffed and had a little leftover for the next day! Thanks Explore Asheville, who supported WNC Pizza Week with a free pizza event just for Food & Beverage Industry people! Thanks as well, to all the local media folks who reported on WNC Pizza Week. It made a big difference! ❤ On the last day of pizza week, there was a little make your own pie thing at Manicomio Pizza and after everybody else was done making their pies, I made myself one! Pretty good! I might have a new career in front of me. Thank you, MODA-Merchants of Downtown Asheville and for making this fun little event happen as part of their Makers March events! According to the feedback that I’ve received from the pizza makers who participated in WNC Pizza Week 2025 they had fun, they found it easy to participate, they saw a bump in their bottom line, and they would like to see and host more events like parties and contests! It's still a year away, but I'm already excited for WNC Pizza Week 2026, Feb 9th - 16th! Mark your calendars. STUFFIN’ A CRUFFIN IN ME: Here's a thing about living in Asheville: We're always on the cutting edge of dietary restrictions. 😂 #truth The result of that phenomenon is that, among other things, we have some of theee best vegan food in the known universe. The other day I stopped into Pollen cafe on South French Broad Ave where I got an excellent cappuccino and the creamiest dreamiest flakiest bakiest shuh-shuh-sugariest cruffin ever dreamed up by science, magic or madness. There were many layers of laminated dough filled with rich decadent coconut pastry cream, and sprinkled with pure uncut unadulterated sugar, and because it's from Back Porch Baking Co., it's 100% vegan.I'm not vegan, not by a long shot, but this thing is truly amazing, and I eat, like, one a month... at least... maybe more... but again, since it's vegan, it's all good! It's healthy! Like a salad.SOUTHERN BREAKFAST: Paddy, Sarah and I went on another Asheville Food Tours lunch junket, to one of our long-time partners and personal favorites, The Blackbird located on Biltmore Ave, right downtown. Sarah got the Southern breakfast with grits, scrambs, and house made sausage. Paddy got the Stoobie Award winning corned beef hash, which I know from experience is incredibly delicious and satisfying. And I got the biscuits ‘n’ gravy with fried chicken. It was very savory, thick but creamy gravy, over a perfectly battered and deep fried chicken thigh, on top of a warm buttery scratch made biscuit. It was great and we all devoured our food! I've been back to Blackbird twice with food tours since this meal, and my tour patrons have been just as impressed as we are! Thanks to Chefs Mike and Francis, and the whole BB crew! 🙏ASHEVILLE FOOD TOURS: The best way to enjoy eating Asheville is through Asheville Food Tours, the original walking food tour of Downtown! Locally owned & operated since 2009, Asheville Food Tours just got a new logo, booking software, and a total website redo! Please check it out, and book your next tour with me, Paddy, or Sarah soon!“On our tours you will experience the best of what our famous food makers have to offer, learn what makes each stop and the whole town so special, delve into the history of Asheville, and become familiar with downtown, while in the capable hands of true locals who know our city well!
